I lived and work in American Samoa 1978-1980, i love the place dearly and it's people. Lately I noticed a drastic change of its youth from being polite and courteous to being rude and mean? There were still a big portion of nice and well mannered youth I met last time I visited 2006. Must have been the copy cat fever they saw on TV and movies? They were acting as if they were with cholos and blacks in the mainland...? But they were now back in their on place yet they still embraces the hoods
Mr.Tom is right....but not 100% right. The roads was first build by the Germans to deliver the copra from the rural areas to Apia. This road cuts through from Falefa to Lotofaga, Vavau, Aufaga, Lepa and Saleapaga. Parts of it goes to Aleipata and very close to this actual part shown here is the part that goes to Salani. The American Marines rebuild it during the second world war... Then the Gov't polish it some more in the mid 80s and the 90s. About the signs...its the western union campaign.
The road signs were put up about ten years ago. I was born and raised there and I can confidently say that those signs were not built by the Americans. It is just coincidence that the colors are the same. As for the road, they were probably built by the Americans originally, but they have been reconstructed many times after they were destroyed by cyclones.

Yes its true that the USMC created some of the coastal and cross island roads,but it was the Samoan govt and its people that extend,create and maintain all its roads.The sign color has nothing to do with it! actually, the main road that goes around Savaii was rebuilt by the Australians in the 80s properly which is y its still in good shape today, all the original roads were built in Samoa by the NZ and German administration, and maintained after independence by Samoas Ministry of Works with the help of NZ and Australia mostly, as for the Peace corps. they mostly helped with small projects in samoa mostly education not really public works as well as plantations and voluntary work in villages
