Ableton MIDI Basics

Hello, I've got Ableton as a free trial just playing around with it. I am in session view and having some problems creating my own MIDI clips within a track. I have named a MIDI track "beats" and created one midi clip with backroom drum, under instruments. If I go to create a different beat with a different instrument (or drum kit) under that same MIDI track, it changes my old clip to the tune/sound of the newly selected instrument. How can i use different instruments within a MIDI track? Thanks

if i took a midi sample that came with ableton live, how would i use my novation launchpad to play that sample?
