Hello, I was just wondering, I make video's for YouTube. I've seen allot of camera's and have I keep coming back to this, I was really wondering If I got the video camera and uploaded them onto the PC, Is it possible to edit them straight away in Windows movie maker or do you have to 'Convert' them to something else?
@waynealexsmith One more thing... This Canon has a mic INPUT. I don't know why but this is extremely hard to find in any pro-sumer camera under $1000.. -never mind one in the $200-300 range. Big advantage.
I'm planning to buy my first camcorder. I was thinking of the canon fs200 or the Canon hf r100...(that's how far by budget can go) this review helped but I would appreciate if you could also say something about the r100. Do you think the r100 is good cam. I saw some reviews and they say it's not that good for its price. Thanks.
@gayatri86 its not bad, its the one I started out using before moving to the HD cam he also using in this video. The only problem is poor quality in low light situations, that can get frustrating.
Great video! I have the same camera and am trying to burn a DVD. I have downloaded all the video scenes to my computer. In the process, a pop-up asked if I wanted to combine scenes (I clicked yes). I made several albums of which I wanted to make DVDs. I placed a new DVD in the drive to burn, but got error message saying I needed to combine scenes. Can't figure out what to do! Any suggestions? SkatenBren
I was trying my best to see the difference in video quality when you changed camcorders, I admit I could see virtually none. To get the external mic and sound monitoring jacks on a camcorder this one is worth the money. Thanks for the no nonsense review of the product.
Thank you for this straightforward, no-nonsense review. I like the fact that you know what you are talking about and even someone with no experience with these camcorders understands your review. I am looking into getting this or the Vixia HF S100 and your reviews have helped a lot. Thanks again.
@JellieBeanGurus It's technically mpeg. It saves as a .mod file with is essentially .mpg. It works fine in just about any media player without conversion and it should work in vegas fine contrary to wmacphail said.
@nmgh101 FS300, cheaper price. has triple image stabilization over the FS200's 2x. the only drawback is the 300 has no mic or headphone jack. but for a camera of this type who needs those anyways? the mic is great.
Could anyone tell me, when I shoot a movie using my Canon FS200, why is the quality not so good even during bright sunshine? Am I doing something wrong or simply not using the camera properly? Thank you!
I bought an FS200 1 year ago, and at first I felt very uncomfortable with .MOD extension, 'cause I need another program to convert the files before using them in editting programs. Then I learned this trick, and it work just fine: FS200 creates .MOD files in mpeg2 codec, so we can simply "rename" the file, change the extension to .MPG, no conversion program needed, and the videos will work fine with more player or editing program, with the picture quality unchanged. :)
@hyperquack247 no, it has no threading for a fisheye but you can buy an adapter and carefully superglue it on to the camera then the adapter will have the threads for the fisheye
hi can u help got this and i cant here any sound when i put the s.d card in my computer and try to look back on the video it works grand in the camcorder but no sound in the computer
I noticed that that fs100 came with a remote and in the onboxing of the fs200 it doesn't seem to have one? Do you know if this is correct? Or why it wouldn't?
Wayne, does the FS200 have better actual video than what we see on YouTube? I notice that your beard lacks some detail. Other videos on YouTube shows this too on certain details.
@cdog2508 thats probably the canon FS100 with 37x optical zoom and 2000x digital zoom...i was looking at that same one...and most likely getting it :)
hey i all ready bot a mcbook pro and i have a FS200 cannos but my mcbook dont recognize the MOD file and if i try to chenge the file the quality get worse so what can i do for it? there is a program or something speacially for that files well thanks. and nice video
Nice little camera.........by the way, what do you know about the panasoinc ag dvc20p pro camcorder? It has 3 ccd's, and at a size of 1/8" each...........tks.
Excellent explanation! You touched on the questions I had and you gave reasons for your opinions. This looks like a camera I could be happy with. Oh-- and thanks for speaking so clearly and not dropping your voice at the ends of sentences. I heard and understood every word. Lorna
You'd have to get an attachment with the threads, then super glue it on, then you can screw on any lens that is the correct size. Other then that, you cannot.
now $250 Canadian :P its on sale, because the new fs300 is coming out, but not as good. no external microphone and i think headphones. only thing better is possibly the image quality, and they improved the digital image stabilizer
@idontknowstudios It does work in sony vegas WITHOUT conversion. im using sony vegas pro 9 and i have a bunch of footage my friend shot in .MOD and i just drag it into vegas and it works!

Very informative review. I'm a fan of Canon because of their awesome lens quality. I had a Elph digi cam & I was very happy with it until it got stolen. I'm not looking to replace it with a camcorder that also takes very good still shots. Kind of an "all in one" if you will. I am considering getting this camera because I want to do educational music videos. Basically, I'm going to record myself playing and talking about some of my different percussion instruments. is it fish eye compatible? because the reason i am shopping for a camcorder is because of skateboarding. idk if you no anything about that, but it requires the filmier to be really close to the action, which is what a wide lens, or fish eye is used, which is mandatory for me, so if you know please get back to me as soon as possible, thanks...
The Sony looks like a very capable SD camera, but lacks headphone and mic jacks, which is what makes the FS200 most appealing to me. I like the on-board 4G memory in the Sony, but I'm not a fan of Sony's Memory Stick media.

What program du you recomend to convert mod file with?
Is there any freeware on the web that bring the 16:9 format?
Kalle in Sweden
kalpata 1 year ago
@kalpata With regards to converting the MOD file, try this:
Go to the MOD file and change the name as follows:
1. Right click on the file;
2. Click Rename;
3. Change the MOD to MPG
You will now have a file you can double click on and it will play in Windows Media Player, etc.
