  • Hello, I was just wondering, I make video's for YouTube. I've seen allot of camera's and have I keep coming back to this, I was really wondering If I got the video camera and uploaded them onto the PC, Is it possible to edit them straight away in Windows movie maker or do you have to 'Convert' them to something else?

  • @Fluffball425 Yes, i have this Canon camera... --no fuss what so ever... video edits in WMM quick and easy

  • @waynealexsmith One more thing... This Canon has a mic INPUT. I don't know why but this is extremely hard to find in any pro-sumer camera under $1000.. -never mind one in the $200-300 range. Big advantage.

  • @waynealexsmith Why thank you so much for that :)

  • can it mount on to a tripod?

  • Great review. This is a big help to mo.

I'm planning to buy my first camcorder. I was thinking of the canon fs200 or the Canon hf r100...(that's how far by budget can go) this review helped but I would appreciate if you could also say something about the r100. Do you think the r100 is good cam. I saw some reviews and they say it's not that good for its price. Thanks.

  • .MOD files can be watch directly on a newer computer running windows 7 with co conversion required. How do I know this? I tried it.

  • Thank you. Is awesome what you do! Great video. Thanks,

  • @199FOE thanks.. il check it out.. but other than this one any other suggestions?

  • is this a good option for amature film makers? if not then which one.. i want something affordable.

  • @gayatri86 its not bad, its the one I started out using before moving to the HD cam he also using in this video. The only problem is poor quality in low light situations, that can get frustrating.

  • Great video! I have the same camera and am trying to burn a DVD. I have downloaded all the video scenes to my computer. In the process, a pop-up asked if I wanted to combine scenes (I clicked yes). I made several albums of which I wanted to make DVDs. I placed a new DVD in the drive to burn, but got error message saying I needed to combine scenes. Can't figure out what to do! Any suggestions? SkatenBren

  • What program du you recomend to convert mod file with?

Is there any freeware on the web that bring the 16:9 format?

    Kalle in Sweden

  • @kalpata With regards to converting the MOD file, try this:

Go to the MOD file and change the name as follows:

    1. Right click on the file;

    2. Click Rename;

    3. Change the MOD to MPG

You will now have a file you can double click on and it will play in Windows Media Player, etc.

  • I was trying my best to see the difference in video quality when you changed camcorders, I admit I could see virtually none. To get the external mic and sound monitoring jacks on a camcorder this one is worth the money. Thanks for the no nonsense review of the product.

  • This guy does the best reviews on everything.

  • Thank you for this straightforward, no-nonsense review. I like the fact that you know what you are talking about and even someone with no experience with these camcorders understands your review. I am looking into getting this or the Vixia HF S100 and your reviews have helped a lot. Thanks again.

  • By the way, how do you get it to save 16:9 default.

  • Hi

Now I have the Aiptek Pocket DV AHD Z500 PLUS and I want to buy the canon legria fs 200

You can look on my channel there are videos which were shot with the Aiptek

can you say me please if it is worth to buy the canon or do you think the aiptek is better

    sorry for my bad english

    i´m german

  • What video file does it film in? MOV?

  • @JellieBeanGurus It's technically mpeg. It saves as a .mod file with is essentially .mpg. It works fine in just about any media player without conversion and it should work in vegas fine contrary to wmacphail said.

  • Good review! Thanks Will this cameras footage directly import into Windows movie maker without conversion Thanks again

  • this vs flip. What should I choose?

  • @nmgh101 FS300, cheaper price. has triple image stabilization over the FS200's 2x. the only drawback is the 300 has no mic or headphone jack. but for a camera of this type who needs those anyways? the mic is great.

  • @nmgh101 depends on what you are looking for this is less portable but has better quality so it really depends on the uses

  • nice review, thanks

  • i have a canon fs200 for sale with 2 extra lenses i will throw in! 1 kenko fisheye & a kenko wide angle $180 for everything ...inbox me.

  • Could anyone tell me, when I shoot a movie using my Canon FS200, why is the quality not so good even during bright sunshine? Am I doing something wrong or simply not using the camera properly? Thank you!

  • do fisheys fit on this camera?

  • We use those cameras in Video Production class.

  • What format does it record at?

  • @champ459 mod

  • ive heard somewhere that they stopped making this camcorder..

    is it true?

and if so, is the fd 300 any better or worse?

    thank youuu :)

  • Would conversion be needed for Adobe Premier Elements?

  • is it good for sports? like skating? does it fit standard fisheyes?

  • @LiarsSkateTeam i use it for skating and i had to glue a 34-37mm adapter onto it to fit a fisheye

  • How is the built in mic? Is the bass response good? I am planning on buying a camera for my band live performances. Not sure what to buy..

    Any suggestions?

  • I bought an FS200 1 year ago, and at first I felt very uncomfortable with .MOD extension, 'cause I need another program to convert the files before using them in editting programs. Then I learned this trick, and it work just fine: FS200 creates .MOD files in mpeg2 codec, so we can simply "rename" the file, change the extension to .MPG, no conversion program needed, and the videos will work fine with more player or editing program, with the picture quality unchanged. :)

  • Hello! I need some help: which class of Memory Card (SDHC) is necessary for this camcorder? it needs class 4 or better? thanks for help!

  • If i convert the .mod format into avi is it good?

  • Great info...thanks a lot!

  • its an excellent camera in my opinion. good audio, good quality, and a great prce.

  • i have it and i use it with imovie 09 and it goes instantly :D

  • Is the Canon Lergia FS200 the same camcorder as the Canon FS200

  • what format did you use to upload the video on youtube?

  • i like the canon but does it work with sony vagas pro 9 .mod how old is the format may i ask thanks

  • could you please help me use this with iMovie?? you make it sound so simple...but i can't seem to make it work =(

  • does it have a threading rind for a fisheye if so how many MM ?

  • @hyperquack247 no, it has no threading for a fisheye but you can buy an adapter and carefully superglue it on to the camera then the adapter will have the threads for the fisheye

  • I LIKE THE REVIEW BUT NOT THE CAMERA...

  • does it have a hotshoe

  • @MacChris4691 No hotshoe on this model.

  • hi can u help got this and i cant here any sound when i put the s.d card in my computer and try to look back on the video it works grand in the camcorder but no sound in the computer

  • @goaskalice83 Sounds like you dont have a necessary audio codec installed for the the audio.

  • does it work with apple computers? wat about final cut express? imovie?

  • I noticed that that fs100 came with a remote and in the onboxing of the fs200 it doesn't seem to have one? Do you know if this is correct? Or why it wouldn't?

  • does it work with anything?

  • can this camera record just the audio? And how to set the functions??

  • damn.. i should have got a HD camcorder.. the one u haz can autofocus! T_T

  • hi Wayne. Thanks for the review! Quick question - is the access area for the storage card not-so-accessible when the camera's on a tripod? Thanks!

  • Without editing or converting can you upload to youtube straight from it or its SD card?

  • Wayne, does the FS200 have better actual video than what we see on YouTube? I notice that your beard lacks some detail. Other videos on YouTube shows this too on certain details.

  • what program do you use to convert? I edit on Premier CS3 so will something like ImageMixer work?

  • your voice sounds very familiar....like from a tv show

  • the one i'm gettin says it has 2000x times zoom is that true

  • @cdog2508 The 2000x zoom is digital zoom, so you're losing alot of quality

  • @cdog2508 thats probably the canon FS100 with 37x optical zoom and 2000x digital zoom...i was looking at that same one...and most likely getting it :)

  • thinking same thing

  • hey i all ready bot a mcbook pro and i have a FS200 cannos but my mcbook dont recognize the MOD file and if i try to chenge the file the quality get worse so what can i do for it? there is a program or something speacially for that files well thanks. and nice video

  • quick question. can this camera use a fish eye lense, and if so what size?

  • Great quality camera. I don't think you have to spend over $1,000 to get a great quality camera.

  • what file format

  • well explained. Thank you.

  • Nice little camera.........by the way, what do you know about the panasoinc ag dvc20p pro camcorder? It has 3 ccd's, and at a size of 1/8" each...........tks.

  • Would you recommend this for it's soundquality? I like to record videos where i play guitar and sing. Do you think this cam is good for that?

  • Excellent explanation! You touched on the questions I had and you gave reasons for your opinions. This looks like a camera I could be happy with. Oh-- and thanks for speaking so clearly and not dropping your voice at the ends of sentences. I heard and understood every word. Lorna

  • Thank you for the information! I'll have a Canon FS200!

  • is the canon fs200 better than the jvc everio gzm330?

  • Hi Wayne. have you tried importing from the card to final cut pro and if so has FCP worked well with it? Nice vid and well explained.

  • Great Review!!! Do you know if you can link/sync a remote to this camera? Thanks

  • great review dude!

  • Can you add a fisheye to it?

  • You'd have to get an attachment with the threads, then super glue it on, then you can screw on any lens that is the correct size. Other then that, you cannot.

  • is this camera fish eye compatible

  • What program is best for editing .mod with PC?

  • very good video

  • now $250 Canadian :P its on sale, because the new fs300 is coming out, but not as good. no external microphone and i think headphones. only thing better is possibly the image quality, and they improved the digital image stabilizer

  • Nice video im getting this in about 2 weeks i like to skateboard and film. with that can you get diferent lens on this camera like fish eye

  • @SCPRODUCTIONSMAC im pretty sure you can but they will be close to $100 but i just got the same camcorder and was looking for one too

  • i got this camcorder, as well and its kinda cool ! but what camcorder did you shoot the second part of your video with ?

    ;)

  • does it work with windows 7

  • does this work with windows movie maker?

  • Only if you use a converter to change the Canon .MOV format into AVI or WMV.

  • great review!

  • cheers - nice review

  • is there a fisheye for it?

  • If you rename the recorded files from *.mod to *.mpg Adobe Premiere can edit these files instantly!

    Love this Cam :D

    Great Review!

  • could i use windows movie maker with this camera? and would it be easy for me to get videos up on to youtube?

  • Good review. Btw, Dell has this on for $239 CAD right now ... pretty good deal.

  • thanks

  • does it work with sony vegas

  • not without conversion.

  • @wmacphail Yes it does just drag it on to it

  • @wmacphail What about Sony vegas Pro 9

  • @idontknowstudios it works with sony vegas without conversion

  • @idontknowstudios It does work in sony vegas WITHOUT conversion. im using sony vegas pro 9 and i have a bunch of footage my friend shot in .MOD and i just drag it into vegas and it works!

  • @idontknowstudios Actually, I use Sony Vegas 7 and my camera outputs my clips into MOD's and they import into Sony Vegas efficiently and quickly.

  • does it work with windows movie maker??

  • You'll need to covert the.mod files first.

  • not without conversion.

  • @wmacphail does it work with a fisheye

  • @idontknowstudios it works with everything-without conversion!

    i own this camcorder:)

  • @idontknowstudios yes without conversion

  • Great review.

I also would like to know, can I load the files directly into final cut 5 or would I need to do some kind of conversion first?

  • You need to covert the .mod files first.

  • Hey thanks for the reply. I going a bit mad here because I want a camera like this one that I can drag the files stright into final cut but it looks like all afforadable camera use compression that fcp doesnt like.

Does such a magic camera exist?

    Thanks again.

  • does this camcorder upload onto a mac and does it work on imovie????????

  • yes to both

  • Can you give me a couple of medium to high end linear editing programs that would work with the camcorders raw footage. I think it might be the perfect solution for my web only videos but I don't like the idea of having to convert everything I shoot before I can edit it. Thanks for the insight.

  • I have 2 questions... does this work with Mac and Final Cut Express? And does it have night vision?

  • Very informative review. I'm a fan of Canon because of their awesome lens quality. I had a Elph digi cam & I was very happy with it until it got stolen. I'm not looking to replace it with a camcorder that also takes very good still shots. Kind of an "all in one" if you will. So I guess that sums up my question..are the still shots good quality & is there a lot of steps to go thru to be able to switch to still shot mode? Thanx!!

  • I have question.

When I shut off my fs200 camera, The screen says" Do not disconnect. Task in Progresss" . Is that normal?

  • Yes, it's writing to the SD card. Give it a minute and all will be fine. Perfectly normal.

  • I am considering getting this camera because I want to do educational music videos. Basically, I'm going to record myself playing and talking about some of my different percussion instruments. It appears to be what I'm looking for but I'm a little concerned about the editing process. I have a macbook from '08 that has iMovie on it and I'm wondering if the video files are usable in that program. I heard this camera records in .Mod and needs to be converted. Is this true and is it a problem?

  • what is the difference between this cam and the fs100? hd?

  • No, this is also a standard def camera.

  • Does it come with the flash so you can record in the dark? Thank you for the review I'm condsiderong this camera over the sony handycam.

  • It has a small LED light that's only really good for one shots. No flash, that would be for stills.

  • Thanks for the review. I am now considering the Canon FS 200 over the JVC GZ MS120.

I want the camera mainly for on board recording of my motorbike rides.

Do you think the Canon would be a better choice? The Canon specs say it records widescreen at 1152 x 648 where as the JVC records widescreen at 640 x 360.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • For motorbike work higher rez would prob be better.

  • Thanks for your reply. I ended up buying a Canon FS22 as it was on sale with a saving of $250.00 which made it only $100.00 more than the FS200.

  • What camera do you use for this review?

  • Canon S100

  • is it fish eye compatible? because the reason i am shopping for a camcorder is because of skateboarding. idk if you no anything about that, but it requires the filmier to be really close to the action, which is what a wide lens, or fish eye is used, which is mandatory for me, so if you know please get back to me as soon as possible, thanks...

  • I believe raynox makes a fisheye that would work with this camera.

  • :O im also looking for a good camera , fish eye compatible

  • Which is better: Canon FS200 or Sony DCR-SX40?

  • The Sony looks like a very capable SD camera, but lacks headphone and mic jacks, which is what makes the FS200 most appealing to me. I like the on-board 4G memory in the Sony, but I'm not a fan of Sony's Memory Stick media.

  • Quickly, can't up load video's quickly, you need a special program that can't do anything. Sorry not to be a hater but I got the fs200 and because of the .MOD file type. I couldn't edit any video let alone view the stupid things. I returned it an got me a Samsung. Way better.

  • I mention in the review that the .MOD format may cause issues with video editing programs. With iMovie the video does come in very fast. Glad you like the Samsung. I've heard good things about it too.

  • very informative review ,thanks
