Most backup quarterbacks put in the same situation, surrounded with the talent Iowa has, would have led the Hawkeyes to victory over a crappy Northwestern team. Nebraska put a true freshman in for two games in the middle of their conference schedule and won both games. It can be done. Vandenberg didn't get it done. Very simple.

I think you'd better go back and rewatch the tape of Nebraska's game against Iowa State. Nebraska totally dominated that game. Because the Huskers turned the ball over 8 times, that cost them the game. I know of no team that can win when they give the other team the ball 8 extra times, yet Nebraska only lost by two points. Most teams would have lost that game by 3 or 4 touchdowns. With Nebraska's defense, they would have stayed right with Ohio State, just like they did with Texas.

If Nebraska has even a hint of offense, they should beat Arizona. Nebraska's offense looked pathetic against Texas and they almost beat them. I'm actually looking forward to the end of the bowl game because I honestly believe that Nebraska will fire their offensive coordinator and their O line coach the very next day. They didn't get murdered. I looked at the stats from the game and Nebraska outplayed Tech in every aspect of the game-offense, defense, first downs, yardage, time of poss. Turnovers and penalties killed Nebraska in that game. On the season Nebraska came within 4 points of going 13-1. Not bad for a second year head coach who is stuck playing the previous coach's players who were recruited for the west coast offense. Wait until Pelini gets his recruits on the field!

The O-Line at Iowa and his TE and above average receivers and backs had a LOT to do with his success. Early in the season Iowa State was 7-1 and it looked like Seneca Wallace from Iowa State would run away with the Heisman. Strange to see two quarterbacks and teams from the state of Iowa get so much national recognition as both teams were in the top 10 at one time. I wonder what kind of season the Hawks would have had with him at QB. He had what Banks had plus a lot more.

i donno senneca was a better runner but banks was a better passer, and iowa throws the ball more than ISU back in those days. bbanks was like 1st in the nation that year in passer rating and he had the lowest TD to INT ratio of any QB.

i was at that iowa isu game...its kind of hard to argue with the numbers, banks arm is what got him the davey obrien award. if it wasnt for senneca's feet he wouldnt have been mentioned much and i doubt iowa state would have been 7-1. how often does he throw the ball in the NFL? not that often and for good reason.

Banks never had the arm to play in the NFL, thats why he wasn't ever drafted. He is in the Canadian football league nowadays. As far as McNutt, I think he has the potential to be a quarterback very similar to Chuck Long, but he just isn't ready yet. He is too new the the system and doesn't have the reads yet. Watching him, he just doesn't see where he needs to be yet, it will be Christiansen, but don't fret too much, with an offensive line that can block, he can be a very good passer

brad banks was really good, but towards the end of the season the heisman race was so tight, no one was really sure who would win it, but then Palmer had a great game against a ranked Notre Dame team that was supposed to have a top notch defense. it also didn't help that in the Orange bowl Carson and USC ended up beating Iowa pretty bad
