Range is very important real world I drov my prius 80mph W Texas it got 38mpg we had a range over 450 miles 5.7 hours. At 65 mph we got 48 mpg range jumped up 576 miles 8.8 hours this is the 07 so it doesn't get as good as mileage as the 2010 prius but it is still good enough. If what he says is true then why are 97% of the prius made still on the road? Maybe it is bc they are lasting longer than they projected them to? Go to fuel economy dot G and you will see real savings. Ron Paul 2012.
All you had to do was draught off the pruis and you got your fuel economy by having the pruis break the wind for you. Let the prius drive at its pace you do your pace and see what you are doing then? Also the prius will use far less fuel that means less TIME at the pump a prius gets 12 gallons a refueling your car probably 19 gallon tank with less range you have less choice on where to fuel thus you will take longer at the pump so you are not faster by a long shot. The battery can be recycled 2.
my 1070 cadilac coupe deville with a big ol "gas guzzling" 7.7L 472 v8 and i get over 30mpg high way and around 22 city. shut up all you people that say old american cars with big v8's get bad gas milage.
Basically this video states if you want to race at max speeds in a Prius your better off getting a m3 and babying it and you'll get better economy. The point I think the show was getting is if you drive a car with a small engine to its limits it can get just as bad as gas mileage as someone with a v6 v8 v10 ect that baby's there car
Hydrogen is the future & we all know it. Internally combustible & can be stored in liquid form so can utilize existing fuelling stations. Just look at the BMW Hydrogen 7. The writings on the wall.
@TheOneNo20 You have to make hydrogen. You don't just pull it out of the air. Hydrogen is made either by the electrolysis of water or incomplete combustion of natural gas. (CH4 + air = CO and H2)
Over a million Prius units have been sold. It is an extremely successful car and cheap to fuel. Go ahead and shut down the nickel and lithium mining. Just be prepared to give up your cell phone,laptop, tv, and car to support the cause. Every car we have driven for the last hundred years has a nasty-ass battery in it. We just now noticed? Hybrid and EV batteries are a drop in the bucket compared to those used in autos and consumer electronics.
@mariyuso Thanks for educating me on hybrid battery issue. The name calling was an awesome way to help make your point. You should stick with that technique.
The anti-electric and anti-environmental and AGW-denying retards,
when they totally FAIL at condemning the efforts of those who fight to make sustainable transportation (whatever form that may take, can't prove their points because they are too stupid to do math modelling logically consistently and add up ALL costs and effects,
fall back on childish name-calling, like calling these beautiful electric cars "ugly".
I bought an electric-assist trike and received nothing but admiration for it.
Please, is your ego so weak as to require supporting your notion of manliness by association with a car? That's quite pathetic. Real men live by their own standards, not by fear of being judged superficially by others.
did I?! How's that? It's amusing to play out this absurd argument to its conclusion. How does responding critically to a joke express fear of judgement? Besides, the conscious association with a car and manliness is telling, but I have no problem with that. It's great when someone finds some sort of gratification, excitement, or enjoyment out of their own car, but demeaning someone else for their car is low-class, whether one dismisses it as a joke or not! just saying.
@Reduxalicious Dumb. How many people can you take on your bike? How much room do you have for baggage? How do you stay dry when it rains? I could ride a bicycle anywhere I wanted for free. Don't compare a bike to a car.
@Bballmaster22 I can take one other person which is no problem since I don't need to take anyone anywhere, I have quite a lot of space with my saddle bags, Tang bag and Tail bag. Ever heard of rain gear? Keeps you nice dry and toasty. though I fail to see what that has to do with any of this, I was just discussing gas mileage.. PS. A bicycle can't get on a freeway and keep up with traffic.
@junglemonkeysex... I'm sorry I offended u cool guy, yeah dis comment made America look bad lol out of all da things my comment ruined Americas reputation lol
Pretty good comparison. I could never drive a Prius the way it was intended to be driven by its engineers and this just proves how much more I'd hate the car if I were forced to own one: it would actually return the same crappy mileage as my old Prelude when I wanted to make it move and would be far less fun, aural and go-kart like while doing it. Indeed, it does come down to how you drive but given that I think a small manual turbo diesel makes far more sense for economy.
Absurd. Are you that duped by cherry-picked data?! Sure, if you have 70 grand and don't care about $4 gas, the BMW might be your ticket. For most people who actually have jobs to commute to and family to drive around, 40 mpg isn't bad.
@radicalsquare Proving that you are a dumb fuck here, I guarantee you if you put a BMW and a Prius next to each other and asked everyone who walked by which one they liked more they would all say the BMW.. When you buy a BMW with 400hp you don't give a fuck about MPG.
And that proves what exactly? That a Prius is worthless because most people would "like" the more expensive car? Actually, if bmw owners didnt care about mpg, why would they feel the need to justify their purchase with this bogus comparison?! Or are you too much of a df to figure that out?
@radicalsquare The comparison is obviously not bogus, simply for the fact that this video is originally comparing a BMW and a Prius.. Nothing you say here will prove anything, face it the Prius is shit and always will be in the eyes of just about everyone. Except hippies of course.. Goodbye now I am gonna go fill up with some 101 octane and waste my gas polluting the air your breathe, oh and I think I'll get my diesel running again, blow some coal up the asses of retards like you..
@uscgjake22 Obviously critical thinking is not your strong suit, and I have nothing to prove, as one dumb car show won't change the fact that this MBW is made for performance and the Prius for fuel economy. Neither can compete against the other, for if trying for performance, the BMW will win, while if striving for fuel economy, it's the Prius. Why you have to bring your anal infatuation or your hostility towards those concerned about the environment into this bogus comparison is beyond me.
go check a dictionary, wikipedia, and search for "prius unveiling" in youtube and click the first result video.
prius, the adjective, is pronounced the way jeremy is pronouncing it. prius, the car, is pronounced with the e sound. according to toyota the official pronounciation is also with the long e sound. these are the facts. clarkson is pronouncing it wrong and so are you.
If you own a Prius and drive it like a normal human being. Some city, some highway, driving about 60-70 on the highway you will average around 50 miles per galon. The BMW featured in the video can only dream of that. This review is absolutely moronic.
@nicoy3k Did you not hear the earlier presentation? Lithium ion batteries are catastrophic for the environment. All you are doing by driving this car is highlighting your own ignorance. Want to protect the environment? Buy a decent diesel.
they're not nearly as bad as lead batteries, and can be recycled. Much of the bad rap on mining is due to poor regulation of older mines. I agree though that diesel is a good alternative but slim selection in the US.
I love it when you see a Prius doing 80+ down the highway, you gotta think he has had that pedal mashed to the floor for about 20 minutes just to pass you.. ROFL!
@Aznag1234 I'm happy for you and your 51 mpg, My focus which use to get around 36 to 38 now gets about 18 to 20. I love it!! Prius=not worth it... dont even bother defending your prius to me either..
@radicalsquare Who are you? his "life partner" I see you have spammed the comment's section of this video and pretty much tried telling every one of them that they are wrong and dont know what they are talking about. You must be a Prius owner and I honestly dont give a fuck what you think. Prius=Gay!!!! Waste of money time resources energy metal glass plastic electronics well that list could be huge..
So responding to a barrage of inane comments is "spamming"?! There's no wrong-right here, just pointing out the comparison is absurd because you can cherry-pick or contrive any comparison to get desired results, that's just PR 101, and further the caption that "a P is worhtless" based on this video is an erroneous conclusion. Besides, talking to your boyfriend he said being gay had more to do with anal sex you gave him than the Prius he drove, but perhaps you know better.
lol thats awesome. it really isnt what you drive, hes completely right. i could make a prius get horrible mileage and i could make a bmw m3 get amazing mileage. and on long trips, a BMW going 90mph revving at about 2k RPMs will have better MPG than a prius going 70mph revving at the same.
oh and little info for people, the difference between 30mpg and 40mpg isnt worth the price difference.
150/30 - 5gallons
150/40 - 3.75gallons.
you just saved yourself about $5 but paid $20k more.
if you get over 20, you can easily drive it to get 30 and at 30, you are getting great mileage. but MPG is misleading anyway because the faster you go at a lower RPM, the higher is it. GPM is the more accurate way to tell fuel economy. google it, there's some article on a study they did for that.
What planet do you drive on? MPG is "misleading"?! If your purpose is going the farthest with less gas used, mpg is all you need to know. There's no more study required.
Why would you buy a car if you're only gonna drive it 1 mile?! I know this might be difficult, but try multiplying that out over a few years of ownership to get a less misleading comparison.
The 2011 Prius is fast as shit....for what it is. I didn't get below 20 mpg even using pwr mode. In eco mode I can see why the typical Prius driver drives like a 90 yr old who can't see shit. Once you leave that eco bar, the mpg gauge shoots from the 100's down to about the 30's.
@TheSjaan105 Go rent one. Toyota rent a car is cheaper than enterprise budget or hertz will charge you for a Corolla or Yaris. I'd never buy one but as I said the new ones are light years ahead of the previous models. I think I pissed off a few real Prius owners when I passed them up on the street or freeway doing 4mph above the posted speed limit. I think they had that Native American on the side of the highway tear when that guy threw trash out the window moment.
Useless?! A Prius gets 45 mpg vs about 12 mpg for city commuting. Driving 10k miles per year, a Prius would use 222 gallons in that year, whereas a 12-mpg SUV would use 833 gallons. Depending on where you are, that extra 611 gallons would cost you at least $2400 if gas costs $4 a gallon. Sure the Prius not for everyone, but this video is worthless unless you want to assuage your regrets for owning a gas guzzler.
@radicalsquare Yes, but that gas guzzler can carry 7 people, so multiply it by 7. Because if you're in a Prius, you'll have NO friends to carpool with. So yeah, I'll take the Range Rover, save the planet, have friends, and not look like a total ass, thank you, good night.
Okay, but the Prius takes 5 people (although a 7-seater is being released in Japan). Most people don't carpool to work but sure it''s useful to have that capability if you use it often enough. "No friends to carpool with"?! Is your ego so frail as to desperately seek approval from people with the car you drive? I hope you're not implying that you think people are shallow enough to care what car you drive, but hey,if those are your friends, then that's how you roll, so be it.
@radicalsquare My case in point: I have never seen more than one person in a Prius, but I have almost always seen 3 or more people in a "gas guzzler". Maybe it's different where you live, but as far as I've seen, the "gas guzzler" is doing more for the planet than the Prius.
@radicalsquare Neither is yours. Which do you bet will last longer, a GMC Yukon or a Prius. Secondly, several doesn't amount to every day, smarts. Nice fail, though.
What bs! Under routine driving the Prius gets 50 mpg, confirmed by owners I know personally. The BMW M3's 19 mpg is about as good as it gets, getting 14 city. At 3x the price you'll get a great performing BMW, but on top of paying $40k less to buy a Prius, you'll also save thousands a year in gas. This "comparison" was done in an environment that's ideal for the BMW, but why not try something neutral, like taking a drive down the coast? It's obvious this was a biased, flawed test.
Dude, the car drives easily at high freeway speeds and gets easily 45 mpg or more. Are you that clueless? I can see how someone might fall for this irrelevant comparison if they've never driven a car. Maybe when you get your driver's license you'll figure it out. I'll give you a hint, "D" means "drive."
@radicalsquare Noting that you are from the US I assume your "high freeway speeds" is what? 55mph? That's not even the UK national speed limit (60 on single road, 75 on motorways) and most people on motor ways here go over 80 anyway.
Their "reasonably priced car" goes around their track faster than that prius and it is an absolute dog of a car.
D means bad fuel economy, bad gearing and bad acceleration if you require it, you might want to learn to drive a manual - LIKE I DID.
@galenwolf The Highway and freeway speeds differ from state to state. Where I'm from it's actually 70mph. But like you said; most people go faster (somewhere in the ballpark of 80-90). Other states however are more like 45-60mph. Just depends on where you go.
Also, EVERYONE should learn to drive a manual. It should be mandatory.
Yea, manual should be mandatory. In the UK however pretty much everyone is forced to learn manual because the driving schools will only buy manual cars. This is due to how UK Driving Licences work, if you learn on a manual then you are legal to drive Auto and Manual. However if you learn on a Auto, you cannot drive a manual until you pass another series of exams. Since most cars here are manual anyway, everyone I know has learnt manual.
Manual transmissions suck. There's a reason automatic was invented.
Yes, we all know there is gas savings with manual.
But gas savings should be achieved other ways: make smaller lighter cars, like the SmartCar.
On a global scale, reduce human overpopulation by mandatory castration of stupid males (not the smart ones), outlaw meat (no reason can't go vegan). Drive less.
1) The entire human population could fit into one US state with a house and garden per person.
2) My how sexist.
3) That would cause world wide famines. Arable land isn't as common as you think, and cant always be used for farming anyway. The UK (example) couldn't sustain its population on crops alone, we use non-arable land for livestock using grass during summer and the left overs crops pressed into pellets during winter, with fishing as well.
@mphello Btw Manuals, are far, far better than Automatics. Automatic is basically for lazy arsed people. Manuals means I can drive in weather you cannot. I set the gear ratios so that whilst your automatic is spinning like an idiot on compacted snow or ice, my manual can be set into 3rd or 4th where I can use the gearing ratios to slowly start moving, which I have done.
65-75 is the US speed limit (wake up man, we're not in the 70s any more). And yes, at that speed the Prius gets 50 or so mph. And, btw, automatics with 4-speeds lose little mpg these days, usually less than 10%. Where have you been all these years?!
Remember, an assumption starts with an ass. What makes you think I drive an automatic?
@radicalsquare Also 45mpg? You'd be better off buying a diesel that has the auto cut off engine feature when in traffic, you'll get a lot better fuel economy when doing long distance.
BTW if you go to car-emission . com you'll see that the prius isn't even the best car for mpg, the Volkswagen 1.2 BlueMotion gets 83mpg (for example).
and SKODA Fabia Hatch 1.6 CR TDI 75ps can get 78.5 mpg, 8mpg better than the Prius at 70mpg max.
Sure, but for a good-sized 4-door hatchback nothing gets better mpg in the states. I'd love to have a few of those small diesels here in the US. The last Skoda I've seen in America was at expo '84 in Vancouver! I drove a rental in Slovakia/Czech last year, though (gas version); nice car.
@radicalsquare Skoda's have become a real nice make. they used to be awful.
Back when I was a kid there was a joke: "how do you make a skoda do 40? push it off a really high cliff"
However now they are under new management, yea good cars. So are Vauxhalls - really well built (even after 10 years they feel as strong as they where new unlike fords that go loose after around 3). My dads got one and can get up to 55mpg+ when driven properly.
Ur useless dumbasses. I have owned 3 priuse one 2007 crashed from being merged into on highway. Replaced 3 years later after the court dispute by insurance. 2 crashed a few weeks ago cause garbage truck t boned at a low speed. There the best cars I have ever owned. Now I have my third prius. The only thing that they suck at is Long drives. And I cargo space. But I also own a 2011 BMW 745li loaded edition and that kicks the prius in the ass though. That's all I have to say.
If the BMW was following the Prius the whole way around the track like they showed, it would have had a massive efficiency gain from the slipstream. They probably should have repeated the test at the same speed with the BMW in front.
That's a great observation. It's refreshing to read an occasional smart comment here, as this video is otherwise sadly deficient in intelligent comments.
you people are fucking retarded ..... you just saw the proof .... these cars drove at the same speed and the bmw had better mileage ... they werent ripping around the track either
Proof of what exactly? Do you actually drive? Any car driven to its extreme performance is inefficient with fuel. The BMW is a great car meant for high speed, and costs three times as much. For typical driving, city or highway, the Prius gets over 45 mpg, which is twice that of the BMW. When a Prius tries to drive like a BMW, it fails, but try getting good fuel economy with the BMW, and its best attempt will fail against the Prius, because they're made for different purposes. DUH!
@radicalsquare yes i do drive dumbass i dont sit on my computer all day bashing people on youtube ... bottom line is the Prius is the most unpractical car... no hybrids can jet just as good mileage and they dont cost a billion dollars to repair.... if you own a prius your in for a shock when your alternator goes out .... i know this because i am a mechanic and i did resherch paper on this when a was in school
It's designed for commuters who want to save thousands of dollars a year in gas. If you think that's retarded then what can I say. And seriously, partisan politics (DEM vs REP) these days shows how clueless you are.
Actually what he says is EXACTLY true. How to drive the car is exactly how good the milage is. 95% of the people in the world do not race on tracks at excessive speeds with cars designed for city use. Hmmm interesting. Also the Prius batteries are recycled.
All of you who are mad at Jeremy, for saying the Prius is worse for the enviroment than a discovery. he wasnt saying that it doesn't get the 55 mpg or whatever, but how you drive your car is what really affects the miles per gallon. so dont get mad because you're doing more harm than to the enviroment than someone in a V12. we all know you are saving money, that's the only thing the Prius is good for.
Actually, the problem is that he doesn't offer any proof that the Prius is worse for the economy, only mentions nickel being shipped around and a global supply production chain for batteries, which typically occurs for a lot car parts. Ignition parts come from Japan, Platinum/Palladium for cat converter from South Africa, etc. He implies there's a negative environmental impact with Prii by evoking dubunked claims, but his vagueness is a clue to his deception.
@TheJJAAZZZZ Not all of us has the same accent ignorant one. If you're going to make fun of pronunciation, look at how the Dutch pronounces the Hyundai Veloster (the Hyundai Flosser) or how people pronounces Maybach.
@G0Far Accent is not an excuse for pronouncing something incorrectly.
A British person can emphasize all of the syllables in the car company Jaguar and be correct because it's an English brand.
However, President Obama is an American, so regardless of your accent, you should say his name correctly instead of the the English habit of saying "Barrick". How do the Japanese say Prius? Just like Americans say it....correctly.
@TheJJAAZZZZ How do we know a word is correct then? If we've grown up believing a thing for pretty much our whole lives and being taught by society how something is pronounced, and some guy from a foreign country says otherwise, we'd bring our bias side of the word to make them believe the word is pronounced that way, and not theirs. Maybe Maybach is pronounced "mae-basch" or "mae-back" or whatever. It's what we believe is true, and what we were taught throughout our lives.
@G0Far The English have not grown up saying Prius. They learned it with the rest of the world. I lived in England. When I pronounced "Gloucester Road" with a "ch" in the C sound, and I pronounced all of the syllables implied by the spelling of the word (from an American perspective). I was corrected to pronounce it like "gloster". Why did I comply? It's their word, not mine. To call it "glochester" would be incorrect by any objective measure. Same thing with Prius. Get it together, Brits.
of course the prius uses more fuel when u're flooring it compare to light footing the m3... the prius can do much better than that if it was driven the right way as jeremy says... in this case the prius is not driven the right way...
I think the prius is over-rated as well (especially in the eco-friendly department) but the test was extremely unfair. The trailing car will get significantly better mpg due to lower air resistance. You'd have to run the test again with the prius trailing and average the two out.
A buddy of mine and I drove to work once a few years back. He had a Prius, I had a Vento Zip r3i moped.
I got better fuel economy than he did, looked like less of a (insert insults of choice) than he did, burned him off at every single light, and, thanks to my riding gear being on and his window being down, was substantially drier than him when a sudden rainstorm hit shortly before we got there.
Thanks to my iPod Shuffle, he couldn't even pull the "at least I have music" excuse on me. :D
Would you give it a rest with this ego identification with a car? Seriously, buy a car for your needs, not for what others think you'll look like. It's cool that you have a moped, if it works for you, great. I don't trust drivers enough to drive a moped in the city, especially in the rain! Curious, though, was your friend really not able to roll up the window!! Maybe he wanted to get wet! Anyway, drive safe out there!
@99minerkc It is. Why buy a Prius, which is actually kind of expensive, just to save money of fuel? Your also sacrificing speed, handling, looks, practicality, etc. all in the name of fuel. It makes no sense. Especially with new cars like the Chevy Volt, which is a better car all around, and these newer cars that reach into the high 30s to low 40s.
@Collin0730 you don't know what you;re talking about. Go read the last 6 or more years of consumer reports articles on why to buy a prius and then get back to me.
The Prius is no slouch actually. It's not meant to compete with a BMW costing three times as much, but has plenty of power. What's so impractical? It carries 4 passengers plus a hatchback full of stuff.
@radicalsquare 4 Passengers in a car that is larger than my Nissan (meant to carry 5...?) with a Hatchback...? Hatchbacks with full load of passengers (in my experience) offers less space than even your average trunk.
I think I'll stick with my car costing half as much as a Prius with repairs I can do myself with probably more room and more power.
While you're wanking the car why not go out and burn some tires; you'll be helping the environment as much as you would by driving this car.
The Prius is a joke and nothing more than a statement. Driving/owning a Prius is not better for the environment, not the most fuel efficiant and certainly not going to save you any money.
@MrNgMichael The diesel trucks here are decent enough for hevy duty needs, but there are so few diesel cars they are almost unheard of. I wish the U.S. would take a look at what european contries do and take notes. Our cars, trucks, vans...are all junk nowadays
Are you in Europe? Diesels are nearly extinct in the US. I agree though, the small Euro-diesels are great. For the Prius' size, carrying 5 people + a hatchback, 45 mpg is very good. It's one of the most efficient four + seaters sold in the US.
Yeah, that or Mercedes or VWs. the older MB diesels are still easy to come by. I drive my ex-boss' Ford double-cab monster and got almost 20 mpg due to diesel power. If that were gas 12 would be a stretch I'd assume!
@radicalsquare There was a guy with a mercedes diesel (no idea what the specs are) but she was a nice smooth running machine. first one I've seen in person.
The prius just makes the most efficient part of petrol engine use, the open road, inefficient. The only green part is no emissions in the city, not petrol consumpsion
The point of this video is to sell BMWs and make their potential owners feel superior to people that prefer to save money on gas. The BMW costs three times as much and gets half the mpg under regular commuting conditions. I actually don't care one bit about the point of this video because it's pathetically ego-driven. Seriously guy, what's the hostility about that requires you to insult someone who wants to save money on gas?
@radicalsquare Judging by your comment, I'd say you either don't drive, or have bought an ecobox and have developed an inferiority complex. People like me, whom you'd no doubt label as 'enemies of the earth' or whatever, don't care what other people drive. I am something of a car nut, and like most nuts, I spend a proportionately larger sum of my income on what I drive. Others don't, and I couldn't care less. Not bothered.
My problem is with smug, condescending attitudes like yours.
Since you are a car nut, you should know that this comparison is bogus because they are in two completely different price and performance classes. Do what you want with our money, but your comment that I have an "inferiority complex" for driving an econobox proves the ego fulfillment aspect I was referring to! If you like your car, enjoy it, but don't put others down who need to save money when commuting.
Its best right now to just buy a domestically built car that uses as many parts from your country as possible (check the sticker), and is very fuel efficient. If you want to do good by the environment, a Prius is one of the worst cars you can buy. By the time you've bought it, its already done so much damage to the environment, you'll have to own it a lot longer than you planned to work off the massive footprint its battery's manufacturing process has left on the planet. Totally pointless car.
Nothing in this video demonstrates that hybrids' battery manufacturing is any worse than other parts for conventional gas engines. Thestudies that attempt to imply that are bogus. I'd like to hear some facts, not just some clown trying to sell a luxury BMW cherry-pick facts and contrive an irrelevant track test.
@radicalsquare All that tells me is you don't know much about the materials gas engines are made of... which is usually iron, steel, aluminum, and a mix of tin/copper/1%phosphorous. Nickel is one of the worst most damaging metals you can mine from the earth. We don't have environmentally safe options right now that wouldn't bankrupt anyone who tried to utilize them. I'll admit that aluminum is pretty awful on the environment and other metal mills do some damage, but nickel is way way worse!
Please direct me to studies. Lead is said to be far worse than nickel (of which conventional cars have far more of than the Prius). Much mining is harmful, even gold, copper, etc. Nickel may be more harmful than many metals, but mining processes and its byproducts are very polluting regardless of the metal.
Steel and aluminum? Golly, i had no idea. Is that what I've been scuffing my knuckles on all these years!? The prius uses some of those too, what's your point?
You're forgetting the tons of fuel used to ship it all over the world. That adds to the damage done to the environment. Its not just the damage the mining process does, but the huge distances it travels for the different stages of nickel processing and manufacturing processes involved in making the batteries, only to be shipped back to North America from where it originated. Total waste of resources and a silly self-contradiction for an enviro-friendly car.
Totally agree. The oil industry keeps better technologies repressed to keep oil dependency, so the Prius looks somewhat better, relatively, but it's far from ideal. I hope to convert to electric or a more sustainable alternative one of these days.
Do you know what "useless" means? The arguments here are ridiculous and absurd. It can't beat a BMW costing 3x as much around a track and it looks ugly and superficial friends might laugh at me. Oh no, it's useless. Seriously, the level of immaturity displayed here makes me wonder if some of these people are old enough to drive.
@radicalsquare While the example comparison given (such a the BMW) is a little absurd the point is still valid in this case. The car is marketed as an economy car to help the environment: it fails on both accounts to types of vehicles that have been on the market since he 70's. You want to go grocery shopping for a full family in it? You can't; it lacks the room for either the groceries OR the family. Obviously can't go fast in it. So, aside from being a POS car what IS its use...?
I don't understand the point in hybrid technology... And please, no one try and tell me that it's all about efficiency. You can get a VW Golf diesel for a few thousand bucks less than a prius, or any other hybrid for that matter, and get close to 60mpg. Hybrid technology is useless.

TheOneNo20 3 months ago

Besides, the conscious association with a car and manliness is telling, but I have no problem with that. It's great when someone finds some sort of gratification, excitement, or enjoyment out of their own car, but demeaning someone else for their car is low-class, whether one dismisses it as a joke or not! just saying.

For most people who actually have jobs to commute to and family to drive around, 40 mpg isn't bad.

uscgjake22 3 months ago
@uscgjake22
And that proves what exactly? That a Prius is worthless because most people would "like" the more expensive car? Actually, if bmw owners didnt care about mpg, why would they feel the need to justify their purchase with this bogus comparison?! Or are you too much of a df to figure that out?
radicalsquare 3 months ago
@radicalsquare The comparison is obviously not bogus, simply for the fact that this video is originally comparing a BMW and a Prius.. Nothing you say here will prove anything, face it the Prius is shit and always will be in the eyes of just about everyone. Except hippies of course.. Goodbye now I am gonna go fill up with some 101 octane and waste my gas polluting the air your breathe, oh and I think I'll get my diesel running again, blow some coal up the asses of retards like you..
uscgjake22 3 months ago
@uscgjake22 Obviously critical thinking is not your strong suit, and I have nothing to prove, as one dumb car show won't change the fact that this MBW is made for performance and the Prius for fuel economy. Neither can compete against the other, for if trying for performance, the BMW will win, while if striving for fuel economy, it's the Prius. Why you have to bring your anal infatuation or your hostility towards those concerned about the environment into this bogus comparison is beyond me.

they're not nearly as bad as lead batteries, and can be recycled. Much of the bad rap on mining is due to poor regulation of older mines. I agree though that diesel is a good alternative but slim selection in the US.

Besides, talking to your boyfriend he said being gay had more to do with anal sex you gave him than the Prius he drove, but perhaps you know better.
radicalsquare 3 months ago
lol thats awesome. it really isnt what you drive, hes completely right. i could make a prius get horrible mileage and i could make a bmw m3 get amazing mileage. and on long trips, a BMW going 90mph revving at about 2k RPMs will have better MPG than a prius going 70mph revving at the same.
oh and little info for people, the difference between 30mpg and 40mpg isnt worth the price difference.
150/30 - 5gallons

10mpg - 150/10 - 15 gallons
20mpg - 150/20 - 7.5 gallons
30mpg - 150/30 - 5 gallons
40mpg - 150/40 - 3.75 gallons
50mpg - 150/50 - 3 gallons
if you get over 20, you can easily drive it to get 30 and at 30, you are getting great mileage. but MPG is misleading anyway because the faster you go at a lower RPM, the higher is it. GPM is the more accurate way to tell fuel economy. google it, there's some article on a study they did for that.
goruntoyourmma 4 months ago

Sure the Prius not for everyone, but this video is worthless unless you want to assuage your regrets for owning a gas guzzler.
radicalsquare 4 months ago
@radicalsquare Yes, but that gas guzzler can carry 7 people, so multiply it by 7. Because if you're in a Prius, you'll have NO friends to carpool with. So yeah, I'll take the Range Rover, save the planet, have friends, and not look like a total ass, thank you, good night.
TheRE4Merchant 4 months ago
@TheRE4Merchant
I hope you're not implying that you think people are shallow enough to care what car you drive, but hey,if those are your friends, then that's how you roll, so be it.
radicalsquare 4 months ago
@radicalsquare My case in point: I have never seen more than one person in a Prius, but I have almost always seen 3 or more people in a "gas guzzler". Maybe it's different where you live, but as far as I've seen, the "gas guzzler" is doing more for the planet than the Prius.
TheRE4Merchant 4 months ago
@TheRE4Merchant
Your limited perception is not the basis for a scientific study. I've personally been one of four occupants of a prius on several occasions.
radicalsquare 3 months ago
@radicalsquare Neither is yours. Which do you bet will last longer, a GMC Yukon or a Prius. Secondly, several doesn't amount to every day, smarts. Nice fail, though.
TheRE4Merchant 3 months ago
It's obvious this was a biased, flawed test.
radicalsquare 4 months ago

galenwolf 4 months ago
@galenwolf
Dude, the car drives easily at high freeway speeds and gets easily 45 mpg or more. Are you that clueless? I can see how someone might fall for this irrelevant comparison if they've never driven a car. Maybe when you get your driver's license you'll figure it out. I'll give you a hint, "D" means "drive."
radicalsquare 4 months ago
@radicalsquare Noting that you are from the US I assume your "high freeway speeds" is what? 55mph? That's not even the UK national speed limit (60 on single road, 75 on motorways) and most people on motor ways here go over 80 anyway.
Their "reasonably priced car" goes around their track faster than that prius and it is an absolute dog of a car.
D means bad fuel economy, bad gearing and bad acceleration if you require it, you might want to learn to drive a manual - LIKE I DID.
galenwolf 4 months ago
@galenwolf The Highway and freeway speeds differ from state to state. Where I'm from it's actually 70mph. But like you said; most people go faster (somewhere in the ballpark of 80-90). Other states however are more like 45-60mph. Just depends on where you go.
Also, EVERYONE should learn to drive a manual. It should be mandatory.
pseudoweapon 4 months ago
@pseudoweapon Ah, thanks for the info.
Since most cars here are manual anyway, everyone I know has learnt manual.
galenwolf 4 months ago
@galenwolf
Drive less.
mphello 3 months ago
@mphello
Either you're nuts or a troll.
galenwolf 3 months ago
@mphello Btw Manuals, are far, far better than Automatics. Automatic is basically for lazy arsed people. Manuals means I can drive in weather you cannot. I set the gear ratios so that whilst your automatic is spinning like an idiot on compacted snow or ice, my manual can be set into 3rd or 4th where I can use the gearing ratios to slowly start moving, which I have done.
galenwolf 3 months ago
@galenwolf
What makes you think I drive an automatic?
radicalsquare 3 months ago
@radicalsquare Also 45mpg? You'd be better off buying a diesel that has the auto cut off engine feature when in traffic, you'll get a lot better fuel economy when doing long distance.
BTW if you go to car-emission . com you'll see that the prius isn't even the best car for mpg, the Volkswagen 1.2 BlueMotion gets 83mpg (for example).
and SKODA Fabia Hatch 1.6 CR TDI 75ps can get 78.5 mpg, 8mpg better than the Prius at 70mpg max.
galenwolf 4 months ago
@galenwolf
Sure, but for a good-sized 4-door hatchback nothing gets better mpg in the states. I'd love to have a few of those small diesels here in the US. The last Skoda I've seen in America was at expo '84 in Vancouver! I drove a rental in Slovakia/Czech last year, though (gas version); nice car.

aj2361 4 months ago

Proof of what exactly? Do you actually drive? Any car driven to its extreme performance is inefficient with fuel. The BMW is a great car meant for high speed, and costs three times as much. For typical driving, city or highway, the Prius gets over 45 mpg, which is twice that of the BMW. When a Prius tries to drive like a BMW, it fails, but try getting good fuel economy with the BMW, and its best attempt will fail against the Prius, because they're made for different purposes. DUH!

ewrtertiuer 4 months ago
@ewrtertiuer

G0Far 4 months ago
@G0Far Accent is not an excuse for pronouncing something incorrectly.
A British person can emphasize all of the syllables in the car company Jaguar and be correct because it's an English brand.
However, President Obama is an American, so regardless of your accent, you should say his name correctly instead of the the English habit of saying "Barrick". How do the Japanese say Prius? Just like Americans say it....correctly.
TheJJAAZZZZ 4 months ago

NEVERENDS90 4 months ago
I think the prius is over-rated as well (especially in the eco-friendly department) but the test was extremely unfair. The trailing car will get significantly better mpg due to lower air resistance. You'd have to run the test again with the prius trailing and average the two out.

Yes this makes sense because our everyday life is laps and not driving in traffic...

@WillRennar
Anyway, drive safe out there!
radicalsquare 4 months ago
The prius useless? ROFL. Tell me that after you have paid 2x as much in gas I me.
99minerkc 4 months ago
@99minerkc It is. Why buy a Prius, which is actually kind of expensive, just to save money of fuel? Your also sacrificing speed, handling, looks, practicality, etc. all in the name of fuel. It makes no sense. Especially with new cars like the Chevy Volt, which is a better car all around, and these newer cars that reach into the high 30s to low 40s.
Collin0730 4 months ago
@Collin0730 you don't know what you;re talking about. Go read the last 6 or more years of consumer reports articles on why to buy a prius and then get back to me.
99minerkc 4 months ago
@Collin0730
The Prius is no slouch actually. It's not meant to compete with a BMW costing three times as much, but has plenty of power. What's so impractical? It carries 4 passengers plus a hatchback full of stuff.
radicalsquare 4 months ago

Diesel ANYTHING>Toyota Prius
WhatUGawkinAt 5 months ago
@WhatUGawkinAt Diesel and diesel cars in America sucks, so I guess this is the most fuel efficient car that America has... which is sad.
MrNgMichael 5 months ago
@MrNgMichael The diesel trucks here are decent enough for hevy duty needs, but there are so few diesel cars they are almost unheard of. I wish the U.S. would take a look at what european contries do and take notes. Our cars, trucks, vans...are all junk nowadays
WhatUGawkinAt 5 months ago
@WhatUGawkinAt
Are you in Europe? Diesels are nearly extinct in the US. I agree though, the small Euro-diesels are great. For the Prius' size, carrying 5 people + a hatchback, 45 mpg is very good. It's one of the most efficient four + seaters sold in the US.
radicalsquare 4 months ago
@radicalsquare US unfortunately. Taking a diesel tech class right now. Can;t believe that the only diesels are huge trucks.
WhatUGawkinAt 4 months ago
@WhatUGawkinAt
Yeah, that or Mercedes or VWs. the older MB diesels are still easy to come by. I drive my ex-boss' Ford double-cab monster and got almost 20 mpg due to diesel power. If that were gas 12 would be a stretch I'd assume!
radicalsquare 3 months ago
@radicalsquare There was a guy with a mercedes diesel (no idea what the specs are) but she was a nice smooth running machine. first one I've seen in person.

The prius just makes the most efficient part of petrol engine use, the open road, inefficient. The only green part is no emissions in the city, not petrol consumpsion

Some of you are seriously missing the point of this video. I'm looking at you, ecotards.
BigGee84 5 months ago
@BigGee84
The point of this video is to sell BMWs and make their potential owners feel superior to people that prefer to save money on gas. The BMW costs three times as much and gets half the mpg under regular commuting conditions. I actually don't care one bit about the point of this video because it's pathetically ego-driven. Seriously guy, what's the hostility about that requires you to insult someone who wants to save money on gas?
radicalsquare 4 months ago
@radicalsquare Judging by your comment, I'd say you either don't drive, or have bought an ecobox and have developed an inferiority complex. People like me, whom you'd no doubt label as 'enemies of the earth' or whatever, don't care what other people drive. I am something of a car nut, and like most nuts, I spend a proportionately larger sum of my income on what I drive. Others don't, and I couldn't care less. Not bothered.
My problem is with smug, condescending attitudes like yours.
BigGee84 4 months ago
@BigGee84
Since you are a car nut, you should know that this comparison is bogus because they are in two completely different price and performance classes. Do what you want with our money, but your comment that I have an "inferiority complex" for driving an econobox proves the ego fulfillment aspect I was referring to! If you like your car, enjoy it, but don't put others down who need to save money when commuting.
radicalsquare 3 months ago
Its best right now to just buy a domestically built car that uses as many parts from your country as possible (check the sticker), and is very fuel efficient. If you want to do good by the environment, a Prius is one of the worst cars you can buy. By the time you've bought it, its already done so much damage to the environment, you'll have to own it a lot longer than you planned to work off the massive footprint its battery's manufacturing process has left on the planet. Totally pointless car.
GeneralHoohah 5 months ago
@GeneralHoohah
Nothing in this video demonstrates that hybrids' battery manufacturing is any worse than other parts for conventional gas engines. Thestudies that attempt to imply that are bogus. I'd like to hear some facts, not just some clown trying to sell a luxury BMW cherry-pick facts and contrive an irrelevant track test.
radicalsquare 4 months ago
@radicalsquare All that tells me is you don't know much about the materials gas engines are made of... which is usually iron, steel, aluminum, and a mix of tin/copper/1%phosphorous. Nickel is one of the worst most damaging metals you can mine from the earth. We don't have environmentally safe options right now that wouldn't bankrupt anyone who tried to utilize them. I'll admit that aluminum is pretty awful on the environment and other metal mills do some damage, but nickel is way way worse!
GeneralHoohah 4 months ago
@GeneralHoohah
The prius uses some of those too, what's your point?
radicalsquare 3 months ago
@radicalsquare --> Google <--
You're forgetting the tons of fuel used to ship it all over the world.
GeneralHoohah 3 months ago
@radicalsquare
Exactly. This arrogant shithead Jeremy is deluded if he thinks he has "proved" anything.
I'm no fan of the Prius any more. Oil-electric hybrids are not good enough.
We need totally sustainable cars: all-electric or electric-biofuels hybrid.
Let's see how well this BMW performs when there is no more oil in the ground.
mphello 3 months ago
@mphello

Seriously, the level of immaturity displayed here makes me wonder if some of these people are old enough to drive.
radicalsquare 4 months ago
