thanks for the review wireless insider. made me get a FANTASTIC phone!
Hi, I'm very pleased to see this review! But I need help in deciding which phone to buy.
I wanted to buy the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Google Phone), but when I saw this phone, I loved that it had a 8 MP camera, now I'm confused to which to buy. Galaxy Nexus has 5 MP and this phone has 8 MP. Please help me choose a phone that's good and a phone that YOU would recommend, Thank You! Plz reply!!
@stronguy20 Hello! PLEASE don't make a decision based on the camera resolution! Both cameras are *very* good (there are sample videos here on YT you can check out). I would look more at performance...and in this case, because ICS (Android 4.0) is still young and still has some noticeable quirks, I would personally go with the GS2X. But remember, the UI on both phones are very unique. My friend, if I were you I would compare both of the reviews and try to choose one that would suite your needs.
@togetherandforever Hi! This depends on the carrier/company you are with and assuming you unlock this phone first. The GS2X supports GSM and HSPA/LTE frequencies. So in China, if you are with China Mobile or China Unicorn, you are fine since they use the GSM network. China Telecom on the other hand uses CDMA, and will NOT work with this phone. Cheers!
@arjunsecondary Hi! Yes, that is correct. If LTE is unavailable, or if you use the phone with another service provider, it will fall-back onto the 3G or even 2G network (it has both sets of frequencies). Cheers!
@mpa324 Yes gingerbread is the current OS, however Android 4.0 (a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich) is on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Not sure if the SII X is compatible with 4.0 so yes, for now Gingerbread is the latest one for you.
@ImCrimzon Hey there, thank you for answering mpa324's question. As far as ICS goes, it *will* be available for the S2X, we're all just waiting for the official push. Based on what I noticed in my review of the Galaxy Nexus, there are still some small bugs that need to be sorted out. I assume once that does happen, ICS will then be pushed to capable devices, including the S2X. Cheers!
Is there like one official android realease that can be installed on any Android phone or do the phone makers or phone companies releases their own version specifically made for that certain phone?
I've just gotten the phone today from telus..and the stock firmware is still gingerbread, this seems to be the latest one according to Samsung Kies update and Telus website. Are you able to install Honeycomb on this or will it mess it up.I'm a new android user please help..
@superwoofer21 Hello. I cover the differences between all versions of this phone in the video @1:02. Make sure you have Annotations on. Basically, the S2 is "older" than the S2X by a few months and is a different phone physically...that's all. The LTE version has theoretical network speeds that are twice as fast than the base S2X, at 75mbps download.
hi! is there a screen that allows u to manage ur phone from the computer for this? (like itunes or something) when i plug it in it says it recognizes its plugged in but nothing happens other then charging.
@lukeaduke201 Hi! No, there is no dedicated software available for pretty much any Android phone. That's because your contacts, calendar, notes and emails are synchronized automatically to your Gmail account. When plugging your phone into your PC it will act as a Mass Storage Device...like a USB storage drive. From there, you can access files and media (downloaded attachments, pictures, music, videos, etc). Hope this helped.
i got this a couple of days ago and i noticed the image is not turning when you turn the screen side ways lol lets say i want to text, the screen just won't change when i turn clockwise. How do i fix that???
@4kisses4u Hi! Sounds like you have accidentally disabled "Auto Rotate". By default, one of your homescreens has a mini control panel widget. There is an option there that has been clicked by accident. This option can also be found under "Display" in the menu. Cheers!
Samsung says they know about the lines.... and have done nothing about it... my amoled looks like splattered sheet of paper at night and it has vertical lines running through it.....
hi, so im getting a first phone and i want a smartphone like this one... i use telus and i need something like this... does this have a front camera for facetime and taking photos?? do u reconmemd this phone for me?? im only 16 and this is my first phone... i live in vancouver canada..
@eckorocks1 Hi! Alrighty, so this is pretty much one of the top Android devices out there...right next to the Galaxy Nexus and such. Currently, it's going for well under $100 on a 3-year term. You will not have the credit history to get this contract, so it's up to your parents...and a data package is mandatory (bill will be a bit high). If you can convince them, GO for it haha. If you do get it, take care of it. It's worth +$600. Three years is a long time, make it last! Cheers.
@WirelessInsider Hey, can you help me ? I'm going to be getting my first phone, and i'm stuck between This, Iphone4s, BB Bold 9900, and a Torch. Please help me. I need it for travelling, business and for fun. Thank you :)
@policemofo Hi! The purpose of these videos is to help viewers make an informed decision. It's very difficult to recommend something to someone I do not know! Here's what I can say between the two. GS2X: large display (media-centric), light (plastic), simple UI (TouchWiz), very customizable. A4G: smaller display (although not by much), heavy (aluminium), a lot of 3D effects (SenseUI). Watch both videos and make a decision for yourself! Cheers.
WOW, i've been watching many videos for the last 4 days, because i want to get either a S2X or Amaze , and i don't know what to choose. I watched both of your videos: Let me tell you; You make the best and interesting videos!!!!!! Clear, fast talking, many aspects of the phones... Thanks
Why didnt they keep the look of the original s2..they should seperated this from the original..with a different name..not just addind an x on it..it looks like a totally different phone and different specs than the original..this one looks uglier than the original..Is there a reason why phone companies have different specs of the same phone...i want to get this phone but with the look of the original..the insides is awesome but the outside looks cheap...
@mpa324 Hi! I have to agree with you there...that's why I had to do a comparison at the beginning of the video. It's silly, use a different name! It gets very confusing, for consumers and sales-people alike. What I can say is that despite the phone being made of plastic, it does feel pretty-good in the hand...most likely because of its light weight. I'm using an Amaze 4G right now and it's heavvvyyy. To each their own, but the most important thing is quality. And Samsung's no slouch there.
@WirelessInsider yeah I guess that's an upside of it being light and all..plus i believe it absorbs the impact better when dropping it compare to heavier phones like the Iphone.I do have a cheap Samsung and it's plastic.I have dropped it many times without it breaking yet, just the battery cover coming off.And lastly nice review..
Good job! Very interesting review ! When you talked about the multiple versions of Galaxy S II, you clarified everything in my mind because I was so confused in the past ! Congratulations !
Good job! Very interesting review ! When you talked about the multiple versions of Galaxy S II, you clarified everything in my mind because I was so confused in the past ! Congratulations !
I was all-set on getting the Galaxy Nexus upon announcement (720p screen!!!), but after reviewers criticized its camera and other misc peeves (aggressive auto-brightness, noise suppression issues), I'm tempted to get the GSIIX and wait for the upgrade to ICS. Do you think that the GSIIX might outperform the Nexus when they're both running the same OS?
@DerGlucksdrachen Hi! What an excellent question! One of the big improvements that Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) brings to the table isn't just a cool looking UI, but also promises increased efficiency/performance. The OS has been rebuilt to work hand-in-hand with the hardware. Processor power aside (1.2 vs 1.5GHz), I think it's more important to consider the chipset, as this may ultimately determine how well ICS runs. GS2X = Samsung’s Exynos 4210 chip / Nexus Prime = Texas Instruments OMAP4460 chip.
@WirelessInsider So what you're saying is that since ICS has been optimized for the TI OMAP processor, phones equipped with that chip may ultimately perform better than a phone with any other processor (despite the SIIX having the Adreno 220 GPU, which is supposedly better than the PowerVX G540 on the Nexus)?
@DerGlucksdrachen Without me actually having access to both devices (yet) I cannot conclusively say that, but it *may* play a role in overall performance. The only SOLID way of knowing is to wait for the Nexus Prime to launch (very soon here in Canada) and for me to load the ICS ROM on the GS2X, then record: boot times, app loading times, run several Quadrant tests and whatever else I can gather. Soon enough, we will both know for sure my friend. Thanks for writing!
@WirelessInsider Hello, I'm new to Android and I was wondering, Is it possible to put stock Android (ICS) on the SGS2X? I don't mind touch wizz, I like it, but if the option for stock android is possible, I will most certainly get this phone :D
@MadDogMeh Hi! A ROM for ICS is already available for the other Galaxy S II, and it's already confirmed that AT&T's version of this phone (the "Skyrocket") will be getting the Android 4.0 ICS update come early 2012. Also, seeing as how Samsung is manufacturing the Galaxy Nexus, it pretty much goes without saying that ICS will be made available to their high-end device lineup as well, either officially or through a ROM leak. Cheers!
@WirelessInsider Thank you, and is this phone available for Roger's Wireless? I heard that Rogers has a 1.2GHz processor and a 4.5" screen. I'm really confused :p
@MadDogMeh Good timing...I just updated the annotations on the video to show Rogers' version. It's called the "Samsung Galaxy S II LTE" and has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4.5" display and has LTE (can hit 75Mbps). It's actually really quite good!
@KeiTakeshi21 Hello! "Unlocking" refers to the process where you remove the SIM lock imposed by a carrier so you can use the hardware with another carrier. It has nothing to do with modifying the firmware, in this case the boot screen. If you install a custom ROM on the device, then this can be achieved. Note, that loading a 3rd-party ROM on any Android device comes with certain risks and voids the warranty. Thanks!
@guny12wunyy Hi! They are both very good phones, but the Galaxy S2X has a bit more under the hood. The GS2X has a 4.5" display, dual 1.5GHz processors and can hits speeds up to 42mbps, while the GS4G has a 4.3" display, dual 1.2GHz processors with a maximum internet speed of 21mbps. Both have 1GB of RAM, are running 2.3 Gingerbread and have 16GB internal memory. I would take a look at who has the better rate plan, because both phones are awesome. Cheers!
@jigga21ish Hi! Unfortunately no, Telus' version of the GS2X is designed to only utilize their dual-cell HSPA+ network, with maximum speeds of 42mbps (in other words, this device is not forward-compatible with LTE). This isn't necessarily a bad thing, since this speed is very fast compared to previous technologies and will theoretically use less battery power than LTE counterparts. Thanks!
What is the main difference between this model and the LTE model provided by Rogers? I didn't see it in the list provided at the beginning of the video. Thanks
@ChochiWpg Hi! Rogers' version came-out after this video, so I couldn't include it in the list (however I did include it in the video comments). Only difference is the "Galaxy S II LTE" from Rogers utilizes their LTE network, capable of achieving internet speeds up to 75mbps, although you will never hit that peak speed. Telus' version can hit speeds up to 42mbps using their dual-cell network. Cheers!
You didn't show the notificaton bar. That's one of my favorite features on the phone. Can't tell you enough how I love this phone, was deciding between this and the iphone 4S and I am very happy I chose this phone.
@ChochiWpg Hi! I know, I missed it! Been looking at so many Android phones it skipped my mind. For those who don't know, when you drag-down the top bar on the phone, it will show you any notifications you have as well as access to shortcuts (WiFi, Bluetooth, Hotspot, etc). A very useful feature. Thanks for bringing it up!
@harishkumaravel Hi! Unlike the iPhone, which is locked once registered to a carrier, the GS2X is factory locked. So unfortunately no, if you just purchase the phone from Telus, Rogers or AT&T outright, it will still be locked to that carrier. Thanks!
@patetarr Hi! None at all! I even tried installing applications from the Marketplace, and then jumping around the homescreens while they were downloading/installing (something that lags even high-end single-core devices) and there was no stuttering. More power for the people! Thanks.
@jetboy1995 Hi! Each carrier has their own promotion. Telus has this for $100 on a 3-year term, Rogers at $180. Prices change all the time, *especially* now that Christmas is around the corner (for example, Rogers had it for $200 only 2 days ago). There are plan requirements as well (data package) so keep that in mind.
@TheMenEgg Of course! In fact, the phone is yours the moment you pass a month of your contract. Even if you cancel, there are fees, but the phone is still yours.
Well it arrived yesterday. It is AWESOME!! I am loving it. The size is not a problem. Just a little bigger than my GS. The rest is GREAT!! Smooth and fast. A real treat. My fife gets my 6 months old Galaxy S. This should be interesting. Her first smart phone!! :)
@geopatr1 Haha nice, good to see it was everything you were expecting. Now your lucky wife can get some Android action too! Hope you both enjoy your new handsets, cheers!
im in debate between upgrading to this phone or waiting for the galaxy nexus to come out, you made it a tough choice for me! great video review, would love to see benchmarks and let you know if you come by any issues
@mchiera Hi! Haha, sorry if I made things tougher for ya! I was debating between the two as well, but having dedicated buttons is something I enjoy. I mean sure, on the new Nexus you can customize the icons at the bottom of the phone, but I would rather have separate capacitive buttons than ones integrated on a touchscreen. But who knows! When I grab the Nexus and review the heck out of it, we shall see my friend. Thanks!
does this device have built in gps antenna as well, like not just a-gps. i need it toe work outside of cellphone range, i'm aware it might be slower but as long as it works without cell service. and that would probably sway my decision in buying this phone,
@ylichsang Hello! I can safely say that I have had no issues with this device at all. I still have it for a few more days, so if anything pops-up, I'll be sure to report here. Thanks~!
@geopatr1 Oh my, all I can say is be prepared for a delightful surprise. Try to avoid Telus stores so you don't see it yet...that's the best feeling, haha. Please, follow-up here on your experience!

WirelessInsider 3 months ago
@WirelessInsider So what you're saying is that since ICS has been optimized for the TI OMAP processor, phones equipped with that chip may ultimately perform better than a phone with any other processor (despite the SIIX having the Adreno 220 GPU, which is supposedly better than the PowerVX G540 on the Nexus)?
DerGlucksdrachen 3 months ago
@DerGlucksdrachen Without me actually having access to both devices (yet) I cannot conclusively say that, but it *may* play a role in overall performance. The only SOLID way of knowing is to wait for the Nexus Prime to launch (very soon here in Canada) and for me to load the ICS ROM on the GS2X, then record: boot times, app loading times, run several Quadrant tests and whatever else I can gather. Soon enough, we will both know for sure my friend. Thanks for writing!
WirelessInsider 3 months ago
@WirelessInsider Hello, I'm new to Android and I was wondering, Is it possible to put stock Android (ICS) on the SGS2X? I don't mind touch wizz, I like it, but if the option for stock android is possible, I will most certainly get this phone :D
MadDogMeh 3 months ago
@MadDogMeh Hi! A ROM for ICS is already available for the other Galaxy S II, and it's already confirmed that AT&T's version of this phone (the "Skyrocket") will be getting the Android 4.0 ICS update come early 2012. Also, seeing as how Samsung is manufacturing the Galaxy Nexus, it pretty much goes without saying that ICS will be made available to their high-end device lineup as well, either officially or through a ROM leak. Cheers!
WirelessInsider 3 months ago
@WirelessInsider Thank you, and is this phone available for Roger's Wireless? I heard that Rogers has a 1.2GHz processor and a 4.5" screen. I'm really confused :p
MadDogMeh 3 months ago
@MadDogMeh Good timing...I just updated the annotations on the video to show Rogers' version. It's called the "Samsung Galaxy S II LTE" and has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4.5" display and has LTE (can hit 75Mbps). It's actually really quite good!
WirelessInsider 3 months ago
@WirelessInsider yes! on the telus website it says this phone will get an ICS update in 2012

can I get rid of the telus branding when starting the phone, if I unlock the phone?
KeiTakeshi21 3 months ago
@KeiTakeshi21 Hello! "Unlocking" refers to the process where you remove the SIM lock imposed by a carrier so you can use the hardware with another carrier. It has nothing to do with modifying the firmware, in this case the boot screen. If you install a custom ROM on the device, then this can be achieved. Note, that loading a 3rd-party ROM on any Android device comes with certain risks and voids the warranty. Thanks!

Samsung Galaxy 2 x or samsung galaxy 4g from bell???? Quick Before my Mom Changes her mind! Thanks in advance!
guny12wunyy 3 months ago
@guny12wunyy Hi! They are both very good phones, but the Galaxy S2X has a bit more under the hood. The GS2X has a 4.5" display, dual 1.5GHz processors and can hits speeds up to 42mbps, while the GS4G has a 4.3" display, dual 1.2GHz processors with a maximum internet speed of 21mbps. Both have 1GB of RAM, are running 2.3 Gingerbread and have 16GB internal memory. I would take a look at who has the better rate plan, because both phones are awesome. Cheers!

telus samsung Galaxy S II will it work on lte when they go to lte anyone know before i get this
jigga21ish 3 months ago
@jigga21ish Hi! Unfortunately no, Telus' version of the GS2X is designed to only utilize their dual-cell HSPA+ network, with maximum speeds of 42mbps (in other words, this device is not forward-compatible with LTE). This isn't necessarily a bad thing, since this speed is very fast compared to previous technologies and will theoretically use less battery power than LTE counterparts. Thanks!

Thumbs up if hour watching this on your very own sgs2x.

What is the main difference between this model and the LTE model provided by Rogers? I didn't see it in the list provided at the beginning of the video. Thanks
ChochiWpg 3 months ago

ChochiWpg 3 months ago
@ChochiWpg Hi! I know, I missed it! Been looking at so many Android phones it skipped my mind. For those who don't know, when you drag-down the top bar on the phone, it will show you any notifications you have as well as access to shortcuts (WiFi, Bluetooth, Hotspot, etc). A very useful feature. Thanks for bringing it up!

hi
if i get this smartphone without a contract in canada
does that mean its unlocked ?
harishkumaravel 3 months ago
@harishkumaravel Hi! Unlike the iPhone, which is locked once registered to a carrier, the GS2X is factory locked. So unfortunately no, if you just purchase the phone from Telus, Rogers or AT&T outright, it will still be locked to that carrier. Thanks!
WirelessInsider 3 months ago
@WirelessInsider is that phone unlocked if i buy this from telus on no term condition ?
harishkumaravel 2 months ago
it lags while charging
patetarr 3 months ago
is there any type of lag?
patetarr 3 months ago in playlist patetarr's favorites
@patetarr Hi! None at all! I even tried installing applications from the Marketplace, and then jumping around the homescreens while they were downloading/installing (something that lags even high-end single-core devices) and there was no stuttering. More power for the people! Thanks.
WirelessInsider 3 months ago
Nice review - thanks, one question if I got the phone unlocked could it run on the Bell network here in canada?
MrDaveo12 3 months ago
@MrDaveo12 Hi! Yes, it would. Telus, Bell and Rogers use the same network frequencies for the HSPA+ network. Cheers!
WirelessInsider 3 months ago
how much is the phone? with a three year plan?
jetboy1995 3 months ago
@jetboy1995 Hi! Each carrier has their own promotion. Telus has this for $100 on a 3-year term, Rogers at $180. Prices change all the time, *especially* now that Christmas is around the corner (for example, Rogers had it for $200 only 2 days ago). There are plan requirements as well (data package) so keep that in mind.

@TheMenEgg Of course! In fact, the phone is yours the moment you pass a month of your contract. Even if you cancel, there are fees, but the phone is still yours.

im in debate between upgrading to this phone or waiting for the galaxy nexus to come out, you made it a tough choice for me! great video review, would love to see benchmarks and let you know if you come by any issues
mchiera 4 months ago
@mchiera Hi! Haha, sorry if I made things tougher for ya! I was debating between the two as well, but having dedicated buttons is something I enjoy. I mean sure, on the new Nexus you can customize the icons at the bottom of the phone, but I would rather have separate capacitive buttons than ones integrated on a touchscreen. But who knows! When I grab the Nexus and review the heck out of it, we shall see my friend. Thanks!
WirelessInsider 4 months ago
does this device have built in gps antenna as well, like not just a-gps. i need it toe work outside of cellphone range, i'm aware it might be slower but as long as it works without cell service. and that would probably sway my decision in buying this phone,
