At about 1:00 there is a version of the Aria from the Goldberg Variations played by an organ and a Cello (or viola' da gamba?) being played. If anyone knows anything about it please let me know.
Certainly a major aspect of the special Romantic character of Baroque is that it's played on original instruments, even though, I gather, they are more difficult to play and somewhat more limited.
This Cantata is so utterly moving. The way it builds stronger and stronger is pure Bach. It boggles the mind how one man could have written so much, so beautiful music.
Interesting. As would have been done in Muehlhausen in 1708, they're performing this at organ pitch, which is about 1/2 step higher than A440, or about a whole step above A415. The strings would tune up to the organ. Voice, string and organ parts are written in G minor. But oboe and bassoon, which can only tune to chamber pitch (A415), had to have their parts transposed up to A minor.

@1:45 - Yeah! Bach did lose something: His parents at age 10!

I wish Koopman was my next door neighbor. He seems the sort of kindly, humbled genius who would engage you for hours in riveting conversation.

I couldn't agree more. I have been listening very intensively to JSB's music since 1993 and the sheer depth never ceases to amaze me.
