Dang, I want to see Three Friends sooooooo bad! I wish they would come a little further down the East Coast of the US! (DC, Baltimore, Richmond, VA) I leave work to see them! Incredible!!!!!
As teens in 1972 my friend & I went to see Black Sabbath at the Hollywood Bowl. The “new band from England” warming up was Gentle Giant. I was awestruck at their performance when some butt brain in the audience threw a cherry bomb at them while others booed and demanded Sabbath. and GG left the stage in anger. I will fly anywhere on the planet to see Three Friends. Is there a web site for when they tour?
@RockBobster1 I am of the same intention, and can't forgive myself for not taking the trip to see them in Göteborg in April last year. I thought "they're back" and more opportunities would come.
This is a good starting point for anything Gentle Giant, also Three friends. blazemonger com GG
@TheGzeus Of course I ment todays commercial industry music. It is sad , that the prog rock bands now don'nt get so much support from the musical Industry and record companies than in the sixties and seventies. There is a lot of very good bands like Flower Kings, Spocks beard or Porcupine Tree and the prog rock from sweden and finland. But the bands don't get the success, the deserved.
In 200 Years, when all of todays industrial music crap will be disappeared, people will ask " how could men in 1972 could create such timeless masterpiece?"
This music is timeless. One cannot say that about most music. Of all the progressive rock bands playing back in the seventies, GG was the most unique and incredibly musical band. No one could touch them . It almost seemed as if none of the other prog rock bands would even mention them in interviews because they were just too damned great!
For the Shulman brothers to feel uncomfortable with Kerry and the other two original members playing the great music they were very much a part of , seems so absurd! They're only helping to promote Gentle Giant's music and sell more GG albums, and introduce new audiences to such a magnificent, and little known (except to us lucky people), band that was one of the most talented and original in the history of music!
@JoeSzilagy I agree. It sounds like even though the Shulman brothers have nixed any chance of a reunion, they don't want anybody else from the band carrying on the legacy. What the fuck? I can see that if Ray Shulman doesn't like the idea and Kerry wishes to work with him that it would cause friction. That being said, I would have thought the Shulmans (and John Weathers) would have known and approved of Three Friends. Guess not. Love Mortimore's playing as well...
Kerry Minnear on leaving Three Friends: "the other writers in Gentle Giant have not been particularly enthusiastic about the idea of a tribute band coming up out of nowhere, and as they werent involved in the conception of it in any way, theyve just been a bit uncomfortable with it. As Im very fond of them, as we all did the work together, just out of respect for how they feel I just felt it would be better and better for myself as well if Im going to be doing some writing with Ray"
It seems I've come a little late to the party. I was a casual fan of Gentle Giant back in the day but I really loved this song. I wasn't enough of a fan to know the members name of by sight for that matter. Could someone help me out with who is who in this video. I know that Danny Green is the guy playing the red Gibson SG and that Malcolm Mortimore is the drummer but that's it. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
It's just bitchen that this wonderful music is once again being played live. Nothing from the Three Friends album has been played on stage for 30 years or more.
Well, this sucks...I mean these guys sound fantastic, and already I hear Kerry M has left the group? They have a unique updated GG sound...great stuff! Too bad, it is short lived...
This is the first Gentle Giant song I ever heard, and it changed everything for me. I'm sure Derek S is too busy running DRT to participate. But at least his label released the remastered CDs - plus a terrific Clutch album. He rules in exile!
The other original members didn't want to join the group? What happened? These new guys play very well, but I would prefer the GG all of us knew!
But at least it's something, a first step, amazing possibility to see these mosters musicians playing live again!!!! All the efforts GG fans did to see them showing up again, worked at the end! BRAVO ALL!!!
It's so great to hear GG again! Been a fan all my life! Hope they come to America soon! Gentle Giant, PFM - double bill...I can die a happy man. Oh, Happy The Man!
I can't explain it, but Giant's music seems to have gotten BETTER from not having been played live for so long. Like fine aged wine. This sounds so modern and vital.
I've got chills listening to this & thinking I might get to see GG again - well, sans the Shulman bros, but they SOUND AMAZING here! Maybe I'LL even come out of the concert 30 years younger!?! Ha Ha Ha PLEASE come to the States!
A shout out to all GG fans! The music lives on, it has never died. It has lain dormant, but it has never died. The proof is right here in the power of this band. They will not rest on their laurels. Expect some fantastic new music to come. Hail To Power And To Glories Way!
@Pectiniculus Mortimore is great, no question. As much as I couldn't see GG playing without all the original members, I am happy to say I like this band. That being said, I see that Kerry Minnear is no longer with the band. Minnear's shoes would seem impossible to fill...
Does it get any better than this? (answer: no!) Oh my GOD this is great. Every one of these posts just gets more and more intense and exciting. Malcolm Mortimore is incredible (no offense JW). Kerry and Gary work together like the last 30 years didn't happen. This is so great I can't stand it!!!
Good beyond hope!
They MUST TOUR or I may have to join agarone in Montreal.
Kerry was GG's main composer so you could say Three Friends comprises a good half of the old line-up. Yeah, I guess this is already more than enough even if we miss other members!
Pectiniculus - I agree - I'll miss Ray & Derek, but they sound Great here. Always wanted to hear Gary stretch a bit more anyway. LOL Gunna have to see them again! Still can't believe this! WOW! GG is back!
Too good!! zboy, thanks a lot!! I was looking for a complete song from the tracklist cause I couldn't get the torrent with the audio material on the dime a dozen site.
PLEASE post more videos from these shows!! LOVE the HD quality. Thank you so much. This is, literally, a dream come true. I am probably going to fly to Montreal from Arizona to see them at FMPM.
Excellent cover. Yet, the Giant had those nice contrapuntal voices in their version. I suppose you can't sing those parts into a sampler, and trigger them with a workstation. Still, this is a great performance overall. Thanks for posting it.
It can't really be considered a cover piece if members of the original band are playing it. It's more or less a standard performance; just a bit with new folk helping the old.
Kerry Minnear is a genius. The bass player needs to be using a pick. That's the wrong tone.

progmeck1 1 year ago
@progmeck1 By 'industrial' do you mean 'commercial', as in 'turned out by an industry'?
Because much of what is called 'industrial' as a genre has as much root in classical as anything Gentle Giant's put out. (Foetus, Coil, late Ulver)
If you mean 'from the industry' I agree 100%, though.
