As painful as the abdication crisis must have been, I think in the long run Britain was better off with the dutiful George than it would have been with the cavalier Edward. (Plus without the abdication crisis, we may not have had Queen Elizabeth).
In '36- the Gov. appeased Hitler & self-disarmed. Churchill said Hitler would attack, and was called a War Monger. Hopeless situation for a disarmed England! Did E. abdicate and fake his roll and position himself to mitigate harsh subjugation of England in future? In ‘40, did his words & dangerous wandering from Paris to Provence to Portugal, offer himself as “bait”, hoping to delay Hitler’s invasion past summer & radar setup? (Hitler did delay.) --Did Edward’s desperate acts save Briton?
I don't believe that Edward ever wanted to be King and that he found a "way out" of the position he'd been groomed for since his birth. He wanted a way out and he found one.
The King abdicated thinking nothing of the consequences he would leave behind himself. He truly believed he would have his cake and eat it to. Even during the War he proved himself irresponsible. After the war he continued the playboy lifestyle to which he loved most. It turned out to be the best thing he ever done. George VI was the gift left to us all. George VI proved himself to be a true King. For this I am grateful to King Edward VIII.
I think that was a very brave thing to do to give it all up for the woman he loved then never to have any contact with his family ever again and living in exile is a very sad thing to do. Love is strong more powerful than the throne of England.
What an admirable man. Say what you want, but I can only think of one word to describe him. Integrity. How many men do you know that would give up the world for the one they love? I don't know very many. Maybe you all have noticed the staggering infidelity that grips society today? And here is a man who sacrificed all the world had to offer for love...astounding...simply astounding.
@ClassValedictorian He didn't abdicate because of Wallace he as forced out and Wallace was the perfect chance. He was a Nazi sympathizer and fully expected England to lost the war thus he would be able to be reinstated as King. Search for Edward Traitor King.
I think that despite her questionable beauty, Mrs. Simpson was one of those rare women who can make a man of insecure and uncertain sexual orientation feel like a man. She knew how to rouse him and make him feel confident in himself. For that he sacrificed everything! Tragic!!
Edward VIII wasn't a traitor, he just wanted to be with the woman he loved, like Prince Charles and Camilla. I am the Monarchy's biggest fan, but even I wouldn't expect someone to be forced to be King/Queen if it compromised their happiness.
@lewismurray1 The House of Windsor is the current Royal House of the United Kingdom and each of the other Commonwealth realms. It is a branch of the German House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (German: Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha), which adopted the English name Windsor by a royal proclamation in 1917. George V declared the change for all male and female heirs. World War II began in 1939.
how can a King betray a country exactly? the kings command is the peoples order, so youll shut your mouth and be led because its apparent your too stupid to lead yourself
The obvious, yet ironic truth, is that Wallis Simpson would have made a better queen than Edward was king. The present QEII would have ascended the throne in 1972 if Baldwin hadn't been so meddlesome in 1936.
Personally...I think it is disgusting that Edward would abdicate the throne for Mrs. Simpson. It was so selfish to put the nation in a constitutional crisis for the sake of her... He could have never led the nation through WWII.
This absurd soap opera made the entire British Empire look ridiculous. The only person who behaved with any sense and dignity in this ludicrous farce was Wallis, who volunteered to give up Edward in order to allow him to remain in the throne.
A foolish man who came to regret his choices. Still if he did not abdicate then we would have the glorious Queen we have now, all her life it has been duty first and self second and still the press criticise her!
I own a shirt of his that is very interesting , made out banana fibre...cant wear it as its 90+ yrs old but love looking at it and wondering wear he wore it
Oh I love Edward VIII ;) Thanks for the video. He was a cool dandy, but sadly he had to abdicate for something Prince Charles now allowed :( its a shame...
In my view, the real reason for Edward VIII's abdication is that he was a Nazi sympathizer, and he had to go. Wallis Simpson was a convenient, fortuitous, heaven-sent excuse.
It's not a shame, I believe that prince charles shouldn't be allowedd to become king! there is not one rule for King Edward and another for Charles. When he becomes king camila will Never be queen, It should have been Diana. God bless her soul in heaven.
I agree with you Prince Charles is fit to be King he's just changing the laws to suit himself its the law that states that no divorcee can be king of the UK. The line of succession should go straight to Prince William.
I am glad someone agrees, i really don't see why the royals can get away with what ever they please, especially when it has an impact on so many people.

@Abbeysums I agree, I think he thought of the Monarchy as an out-dated institition and it's rituals and routine as too dull and tedious for him.

He was a nazi sympathiser, he gave away battle plans to the germans and Hitler intended to put him up as a puppet king. Go look up his bio.

He might have been a sympathiser, but I'd like you to provide proof of him giving any plans to Hitler.
