She was accused of treason and incest amongst many other things that are now said to not even be true. She was hated by the people who wanted her executed long before her husband's death. She was thrown into a situation she had no control over and when the people needed someone to hate they chose her.

is it just me, or does it not bother anyone that she and her husband had their heads chopped off? It is completely disturbing how barbaric people were in those days. I love this movie so much. If you ask me, she got just what she deserved! Ok, so she was pretty, she's a romantic figure. But that doesn't change the fact that she was a ignorant queen, married to a incompetent king, and sat on top a unbelievably unfair system. Of the many stupid things she did was to smuggle secret war documents to Austria during the revolution, wich is still regarded high treason, - she would have been sentenced to death even today!

For a start she lived in an era with entirely different values from us. Secondly she was born into it and had no freedom to choose her own destiny -she didn't ask to be born royal or to marry the King of France. Thirdly she lived completely isolated from the people. Probably no one listened to her anyway because she was a woman. She was not a sadist. Rather I think the people who imprisoned her and mistreated her children and made up false stories about her were sadists.

The guillotine was actually trying to minimize cruelty while still keeping justice since the criminals don't have to suffer slow and painful death like hanging. But it still is horrifying how that hundreds could be killed each day because of such efficiency.

There are plenty of people to argue this point back and forth, but ultimately...dying the way she died was not something I would ever wish on anyone. They have more humane ways of executing rapists, murders, and terrorists than the way the King, Queen, and her poor children had to suffer then die a horrible death. It made me feel a great respect for her and what strength she must have had, to leave home so young, and feel so out of place. I read Abundace by Sena Jeter Nesland. (I'm pretty sure that's the correct name of the author) Her novel was so beautifully written. And very similar to the movies "take" on her life.
