Wow. Nick, stripper or not, that is probably one of the most touching comments I've ever read on youtube. I hope you are ok brother. There are people who love you, don't give up. And know we are all one - not in a religious way - but connected through music/internet/21st living/whatever. Anyway, just know it's gonna be ok.
This song is so breathtakingly beautiful. I love Mark Kozelek!!! Genius songwriter. If you love Kozelek, you should check out ''Fragile Bones (Feels Like Home)'' by Ali Murray, or anything by Ali Murray for that matter. I would say that Kozelek and Murray would have to be my favourite songwriters.
I don't remember where I ran into this band, but they are amazing. And that's coming from someone who loves metal, screamo, and punk. <3 It's good to broaden the genres you listen to.
I also believe all musicians will improve their skills by understanding how to record and produce their own recordings. This in itself, makes it more then worthwhile...
Music today is better then ever, and will only continue to grow. Technology has given us all huge possibilities. An example for those who can't understand: A musician buys home studio gear for cheap (not likely a few years back) Then promotes it through any number of websites (definitely not possible a few years back) There is so much good music out there I've never heard, and that is never going to change. The best thing that has happened to music is the slow decay of big record companies.
@LuxeXx Yeah, if you don't mind lesser quality recordings/layering.. A musician is also not a studio producer or masterer.. Speaking as a musician. Multi tasking is certainly not always the best route.. ever heard the phrase "jack of all, master of none"? something like that.. That rings true for most DIY artists. You can't be an amazing musician and producer.. they both take lots of focus and time and effort to perfect.
@TheSunAndAntarctica Don't get me started on production values. I've turned in the guitar for a board in some respects. However, music is what I love, and will never serve one "master". I'm never going to be the best producer, even more so as a musician. Both have qualities that the other doesn't. (One pays me, the other one doesn't :). While I agree its a good idea to focus on a specific role, you may also lose many other rewarding experiences...
@LuxeXx Well, it's good to have basic knowledge regarding both recording and producing and musicianship, but I'm a much better musician than I am a producer.. I'd much rather have someone who knows what they're doing help me, rather than spending a few years learning how to do something of radio/CD quality on my own.. I guess my argument doesn't matter to you anyway, but to some it's not all that easy and it's a bit naive to think it's so easy.
@TheSunAndAntarctica I addressed your argument. I just feel that whatever someone wants to do with their time is the correct way to go about their life. Thus, I work in a studio and play music; and I'm competent at both. I'm also decent at working on cars, and situations involving financial and business practices. The more knowledge acquired, the more life becomes interesting. This is my simple point, and I fully believe in it...
@LuxeXx I agree, I just don't agree that cheap recording software is going to produce a great CD. Even then, it's difficult to make money from that. I don't intend to make a living off of my music even if it was worthy enough to be bought, because most people don't do that anymore.
@TheSunAndAntarctica Also, several bands have been successful with DIY type operations. I'm sure you a fan of some of them. A great song can be a great song without all of the "bells and whistles" of the studio. Getting it down on cheap gear definitely helps as demos and can be a gateway to better production opportunities. But I hear you; it will always be difficult to make anything close to a normal living off of music, and this is an area where I separate passion and money...
@LuxeXx I'm just being pissy. lol I agree, and I have no choice myself unless I learned how to improve my recording quality (which I'll have to do soon as I'm leaving high school this year and plan on pursuing my musical ambitions alongside a stable career.)
Oh man, that is nice touch, I'm a mess with this. Emotional. Here come da waterslide.
Incredible song! I wouldn't expect anything less from this group, but eeeeeasy... it's not the second coming of the Lord! In my world everyone's a pony, and they all eat rainbows and poop butterflys.
Mark Kozelek saves my life everyday. Literally. The music he makes and his voice stop me from reaching into the closet where I keep a piece of rope that I bought when I first wanted to bring my life to an end.
Thank you, Mark, for all the inexpressibly beautiful, wistful and heartbreaking music you've made over the years.

@nickthestripper28 To echo the comments of an earlier poster, my friend you are certainly not alone in finding such emotions in Mark's music, or in the world in general.
Speaking as someone who tried to commit suicide when I was younger, I can tell you there is hope and happiness in the world but it can be very hard, if not seemingly impossible, to find at times. I really hope you find such hope in the world.
Great video! I orginally thought that this was the "official" video for the song, since it looks exactly like what a Kozelek/SKM video would be - sepia-toned goodness, Great job!
Stunning song and a gorgeous video... very true to his aesthetic (or Nyree Watts' who does most of his cover artwork). The yellow is very fitting, I think, and I love how you washed it out at the end. I hope Mark sees this and thanks you.
I hear hints of Springsteen's "Main Street", along with influences from Gordon Lightfoot and and Jackson Browne. I really want to love this song, but I could hardly make out any words and that was really frustrating. Love the instrumentals, though.
I hear none of those [ as much as I respeck Springsteen] at all. Perhaps some Townes Van Zandt in terms of temperment......Jurado and Bean to an extent, but mostly its all his.
The entire record "April" is like that, he sort of mumbles out the lyrics. That is one of the things that made me not like April as much as I wanted to. that's a shame, cause Some compositions are really great.
this video is incredible! i actually like the version where it lags better--gives it a hazy quality that fits perfectly with the mood of the song. well done!

Kozalek spins the most seductive sadness..hard to explain. Anyway kudos on the video. Its a lo=budget masterpiece. The color alone makes it. The rythym and blending are masterful.
Everyone has their own vices (alcohol, drugs, gambling, etc..). My addiction is Mark Kozelek. I'm not exagerrating when I say I've listened to a SKMoon/RHpainters song EVERY single day for the last 5+ years.
You've got some great talent at making vids like this. Before i read that you created this, I thought that this was the official vid cause i had never seen it before. Real Good Job!!!
i love the video you did, ive always wanted to do a simular video to this...slightly different in my head but simular in a way...really enjoyed it. and the songs amazeing i love Sun Kil Moon!
There's a peace about the album, and in this song, I'm really glad to hear Mark being able to place Katy's death somewhere beautiful. He made the right move waiting for everything to calm down before singing about it. Best album I know from my favourite musician of all times. <3
i am so blown away by this album, and Moorestown moves me more than any song I've heard in years. So I'd really appreciate if you could expand on what it's about as you've got me really intrigued already
Katy was an old girlfriend of Mark Kozelek's who died of cancer a few years ago (after they were seperated). A lot of the album is about her. There's a recent Onion AV Club interview between Mark and Ben Gibbard which goes into this a lot. It's worth reading.
I double that, the interview is amazing! I've recently found out that Kozelek's playing a gig in Antwerp (belgium), I'm gonna travel there from The Hague (Netherlands) to go see him. I know it's a bit of a 'lookatme!i'mobsessed!'-thing to say on youtube, but I'm almost proud of it, so I had to say it ; p woohoo!
This tune is a back of the neck job, where does this man get his inspiration from, cant wait for the new album have 3 copies pre ordered, really cant wait.Intoxicating sound,Kozelek does it again.
I love these lines. The first one makes me suspect that perhaps he learned open tuning (or was first exposed to the style) from this girl's dad. A true song from the heart.
As is the case with so much of his music, the studio full band recording has less impact than his solo acoustic performances. I think it would have had more power if recorded with just an acoustic guitar . In the case of mark kozelek - - less is more.
Didn't know this song existed until right now. I hate my town so fucking much. Soooo glad to be far far away from Moorestown. :)

Mark outdid himself on this album and though it's not his best it certainly ranks up there with them. I still like his RHP songs better.
This is a very well-made video, if somewhat basic.
I wish that Mark would make official videos!

this song is about my town

I know it's a bit of a 'lookatme!i'mobsessed!'-thing to say on youtube, but I'm almost proud of it, so I had to say it ; p woohoo!

wow. really impressed with this video. what program did you use?
sortilegus 3 years ago
I used Sony Vegas. Used 3-4 different layers of video (and pictures) at the same time to achieve the "effect".

awesome! i use sony vegas too, its great!

beautiful video. very nice work. if i may nitpick, though, you've got a couple lines of the lyrics wrong.
should be "Her dad's guitar sings open-tuned" and "Her eyes sad as a raven"
sadmachine 3 years ago
Thank you! They've been corrected.
Katamai 3 years ago
I love these lines. The first one makes me suspect that perhaps he learned open tuning (or was first exposed to the style) from this girl's dad. A true song from the heart.

As is the case with so much of his music, the studio full band recording has less impact than his solo acoustic performances. I think it would have had more power if recorded with just an acoustic guitar . In the case of mark kozelek - - less is more.

As great as the song is, let's give some props to Katamai for a lovely video!
