@eclectica1 Yeah he didn`t shoot the puck in the net. So what? Where is the difference? You still get only one goal. Jizzymypantswtf said that Smith was the first goalie to score a goal he didn`t say he was the first one to shoot the puck in did he?
@MrPappa2566 Jizzymypantswtf said that Smith was the first goalie to score a goal. However, he ALSO said "Your facts r wrong", addressing the uploader, who said "the first goaltender to ever shoot and score a goal".
To simplify things: the uploader is correct about Fact A. Jizzy is correct about Fact B. However, when Jizzy said Fact A was wrong, Jizzy was wrong.
@MrPappa2566 You thought so? Well, believe it or not, but I actually DO have a life and don't sit in front of my computer 24/7. If you want to continue with this pointless exercise, do so by yourself because I won't be replying any more.
And you STILL missed the point. Don't stay angry all your life :-)
@TheBananaman380 However, before Hextall had done it, no NHL goalie had ever scored by actually firing the puck on goal. That is why this is so notable.
@AEMoreira81 so you're saying plante just dump it and it happened to go in OH YEAH i remember i read a book once and it said hextall was the first to score by shooting the puck in the other teams goal so he wasnt really the first
@chelseafcfanisy Selfish . . . A goaltender has a Chance to be the first Goaltender in history to score a goal . . . And you say thats selfish . . .
I mean Being goalie, is the least Glorious position. You never get glamor for a win (offence does) and you get blamed with a loss. I think if your winning, and you have a chance take it.
@ocdwowen84 Try using a goalie stick (with not much of a curve, like Hex used back in the day), and attempt a shot into a goal from that distance. Trust me, it's not easy.
@movitmovit Billy Smith was the first goalie credited with a goal. A player on the other team accidentally backpassed the puck in his own net. Smith was the last Islander to touch the puck so he got the goal. Hextall was the first goalie to actually shoot a goal into the net.
@labarum312 thanks for responding. after posting my comment i did a search and learned about that. i used to deliver pizza to the hextall family. ron was there sometimes. really nice guy (off the ice).
In '94, Rangers beat Hextall & Isles 6-0 in Rd 1, game 1 at MSG. Next night, Hextall was on the bench & caught a puck that popped into the bench. Ranger fans, always classy, gave him an ovation. Great moment and of course, Rangers went on to win The Cup on June 14, 1994. Go Rangers !
I doubt Bill Smith "scored the first goal ever in the N.H.L." What league are YOU in? Smith played in the 70's and 80's. I think the NHL was created in the early 1900's.
Although he was credited with a goal as a goaltender , he didn't actually shoot the puck. The puck never even touched his stick on the play where he was credited with a goal.
@dman6501 Actually, no, he was CREDITED with the first goal, but only because he was the last offensive player to touch it. He did not shoot at the net, it was an own goal, but the NHL credits the goal to the last offensive player to touch it.
Hextall is the first goaltender to shoot for the opponent's net and score.
fuckin sweet goal, and if you dont like the video cuz he scored on an empty net well take a look at all the other fucking goailes in the nhl, they cant even get an assit rather then a fucking goal.
@devilsfan1986 wow, Hextall couldn't stop shit, spoken like a true devils fan, you have Brodeurs dick so far up your ass that you don't appreciate any other good goalies. BTW how was your playoff run this year? and last year? ooohh sorry, but yea the devils are great lol.
Also a Bruins fan and the better call is the Bruins broadcast. The late Fred Cuisak actually calls it moment before. He says, "One of these times, he's gonna score doing that!" Maybe the Bruins could get Hextall to play forward this year!
ha yea, im not even a flyers fan, i dont dislike them, they are just kind of, there, but i will agree with you, and say Hextall was, no is one of the greatest goal tenders ever
he was such a good goalie and look how he pretty much isnt wearing pads - the great goalies back then would be even better today, the behemoth pads take away from the position
Just thought I would let you know that your video info is incorrect. Hextall did not score in his rookie year of 1986-87. It was in his second year of 1987-88. December 8th 1987 to be precise.
I'll always remember Hextall for being one of the dirtiest, ill-tempered goalies ever.
And for being the type of little bitch who would chase an opposing goal-scorer around the ice, which he did when Ron Brown scored on him to make it something like 9-3 in a game against the Pens. LoL What a douche.

Hextall is not the first goalie to score a goal in the NHL, that honour goes to Billy Smith of the NY Islanders back in 79.
What is this, revisionist history?
hafabee 2 years ago
First to shoot the puck into the net. Billy Smith got credit for Rob Ramage putting the puck in his own net.

Right, right. I think Billy Smith just got credited with that goal because he was the last NY player to touch the puck. I stand corrected.
