This is a fantastic tip for people who take the club back too inside and too flat. This was my biggest issue years ago. I began rehearsing a practice swing move where I kept my left arm straight, and simply folded my right arm to 90 degrees, just as Steven explained. (The difference being that my left arm would move a bit more across my body than you see here.) in time, my arm bend and body turn blended together. Interestingly, this also cured my other issue, crossing over at the top.
i want to punch my instructor in the mouth after seeing and know understanding the component of arms going up blended with the turn. no wonder i have been hitting pushes and blocks club swung around body to deep and flat, club is weightless now and higher and can drop down into slot turn and burn, this tip is money....
I do have one question, hope than someone with good golf knowledge can provide a valid answer
If I take my take my posture and lift my arms like Steven does, my left arm disconnects from my body right away, which is a bad thing... confused because this tip does helped with I tried it!
There is side motion!!! Look at any pga golfer, or any good golfer, at the very top of their backswing and you will see their left arm laid flat across their chest and their right arm, with its 90 degree angle, back behind them, ok. If they turned their torso back to the forward position, it would not mirror what Mr. Bann demonstrates here. With that said, it is a wonderful demonstration of the backswing. This is closer to what happens with short irons, and not the fuller swing of longer clubs.
@rockerz9 thats why its a backswing. the downswing is started by a shift of the hip down the target line which naturally drops your hands down into the slow then rotate and release from there.
I have always watched golf on the TV and have always thought that it was the arms swinging around the body, however this video has shown a different aspect.
Therefore, when swinging my club as you can see in my swing I basically swing around my body instead of them both working as one.
I just swung a club in the mirror and it is in a great position at the top and the backswing feels so easy!

Bravissimo! The best and simplest tip ever!!! There is lot of confusion on golf, It seems like someone wants to make it very complicated, but it is only the right technique. Thank you, thank you so much. I am going out and try it right away!
I've been doing this drill for several years, and it really does work. In fact, sometimes I actually use it on the course and play that way. Here's the question, though. Does anyone know how to combine both of these separate moves into one fluid swing? I cannot seem to do it. The only way I can get into this position is to do the drill itself, i.e., lift up the arms, and then turn the shoulders. Has anyone figured this out? Thanks.
I watched this video and then went to the range. The complexity of backswing arm/wrist action was just wiped away through thinking about it like shown on the video. Even to the point where I just simultaneously lifted the arms and made the should turn (might look like coming outside-inside), I could get a lot more consistent wrist action and cleaner impacts and longer shots. So the information given here is, I think, the simplest way of explaining arm and wrist action during a golf swing!
Fine and good, but do not become disconnected, or separate the upper arm from the chest. For many this info will be golf swing kryptonite. Masses of golfers lifting their arms away from their bodies, then wondering why they hit the ball like sht. So sure, swing the arms up, but keep it on the chest.
The best advice I ever heard was this: "Amateurs teach amateurs to play like amateurs." If you want to learn this game, go to a pro and get lessons as soon as you take this game up.
That said! This tip is AMAZING! I've never heard it put quite like this. But, it is absolutely true! It's very difficult to understand the mechanics and especially your own mechanics. Because it is all based on feel. You have to be able to understand what your body is doing at all times to execute a good golf swing!
FWIW, you have to combine the two simultaneously. Especially with the driver tee shot. A FLAT takeaway will start your torso and lower body in that swivel and just let the club dictate what your body does. At the top, simply reverse the motion. You have to do this in relaxed fashion. But, in the perfect golf swing, the combination of the two motions completes the pure striking golf swing.
Some people aren't flexible enough in the shoulders to get a full turn, so don't force the issue and try to get the club up to the top and pointing to the target if you aren't flexible.
@sk8rdaniel THose who cannot execute a full shoulder swing, simply shorten your swing. 90% of your power should come from 2 feet on both sides of the ball. That is why they say accelerate through the ball. Obvious why that is a tenet.
People need to understand that you don't need to bring your arms past shoulder height. Let your wrists do the work to parallel. And this is why you need to be VERY realaxed from the top.
@sk8rdaniel You're wrists are VERY volatile. They largely dictate your clubface at impact. You have to understand the hitching in and out to execute a good golf swing. It's probably the most important motion in the swing if you want the power the pros have.
This guy just explained in 2 minutes what nobody else has been able to tell me in about 1 year....no wonder why it's been so difficult trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with my swing, I was thinking about it the wrong way!!
@andrewcay1 The best advice I can give to you is SWING HARD! Learn to hit the ball. It might take longer, however, you make small incremental adjustments to everything. From grip to follow through. But, they should be SMALL! Only small changes once you learn what needs changing.
@andrewcay1 One change at a time (you need to be consistent and must practice this, too). But, never say "THIIS IS MY SWING AND THAT IS WHAT I'M STICKING WITH" (provided it is a wild type shot...LOL) If you don't like your shot, learn what you have to do until you like your shots. But, it is YOUR journey. Many different paths to take into the hole. And by MANY, I mean INFINITE paths. LOL Trust me, I've known how to turn a par 3 into a par 5 and till not even been on the green.
the first time I saw this video I thought no way. I am a 16 handicap and just took a lesson for the first time and my instructor was totally about lifting my arms up. the feeling was i was coming over the top because I was swinging so inside, but when we looked at it on video it was perfectly on plane may take some time getting use to but this is definitely correct just make sure to make a full shoulder turn while u do it.
This is the best tip ever on the backswing for amateur golfers. add to this the fact that the hips start the downswing and most of us should do pretty decently.
CAMONDRUMS- I am not sure but you sliced probably because the downsing was all hand action and that could be because you were consciously trying to lift your arms but forgot to start with the hips on the downswing.
You should advise camondrums to start the downswing with the hips AND the shoulders. Advising a struggling golfer to start with their hips is like advising someone standing on a mat to have a friend pull the rug out from under them. The hips will act in isolation 'spinning-out' from under the shoulders, leaving the shouders to fall back away from the target. From there the rest of the swing is just a 'recovery operation'.
I understand what you are saying but it is important for anyone to not commit the mistake of turning the shoulders too soon , as most amateurs would tend to do , because they want to hit the ball with all their might. The reason I like the hips starting a moment before the shoulders is that it 1. clears the hips out of the way to let the shoulders swing freely and 2. creates a separation momentarily between the hips and the shoulderswhich add to some valuable distance.
@diffonyahoo That's good, if you're athletic enough to pull it off. Here's a mental image which helps me; FLOUR POWER! imagine that you're swinging a large, heavy sack of flour and trying to throw it down the line. This forces me to use the whole system as a unit and minimizes the tendency to over-rely on the hands in isolation.
if this is true, and i have no reasons to doubt it,im gonna kill my teacher.jesus when i watched this video i feel like i was eating one of the pills of the matrix movie, everything looks clear in my head,i cant wait to go to the driving range tomorrow and try it.
Personally I have been working on a really, really slow backswing....reason; for most golfers it is much easier to stay under control, make solid, and fully coil. For a good example, watch Freddy Couples!!
whatan epiphany! I kept doing exactly what he mentioned....copying what I saw on tv. I thought the pros were really moving their arms straight back. I knew this was not the correct method because when I did it I would end too far on the inside. Thank you so much!!!!
@DaveLeeNC Yep....the one piece take away with the shoulder turn. Flat takeaway and let your lower body follow your upper and let it lead the upper to impact. The downswing starts with the knees.
So true.......if magazines and instructors would label each tip/lesson as being for 1 or 2 plane, upright or flat swing, the golf world would be a better place.
you were probably doing it right , he just explains whats happening with the body when swinging the club . its only natural to swing the club the way he is explaining this . IT would feel pretty weird swinging your arms back alone cause your arms are attached to your body. I bet knowing this hasnt made you a better player at all.
Just took a studio lesson with all the cameras and sensors etc. ... This is 100% correct!! Golf is an illusion! Save your money and watch this video over and over!
i went out and hit 10 balls after watching this video, I pulled the club more up and piveted at the same time, instead of swinging the club back, and racked each 10 balls 290 +
its funny you say that you should watch this vieo over and over again , wowow. thats what i have been doing . good luck mate
Exactly I tried this last week at a 9 hole muni course and I was laughing at how much of a difference it was. For the first time ever I hit 6 out of 7 greens on the par 3s for this course.
What a great lesson! I've played golf since I was very young and I never thought about the swing like that. That completely changes my perspective. Thanks!
I tried it with my 2 wood and you have to adjust how far you have the club away from your body during set-up. I found that by cocking my wrist early it helped establish a solid turn and well timed release.
This is the best explanation I've seen. I spent over $1000 with Golftec and never improved the way that I did immediately after watching your video. The first round after watching your video was an 85. The second time I played was an 81. And the very last time I played (only time for 9) this week, I shot a 37! I ordered your book and DVD and now look forward to playing the rest of my life. Thank You for giving back a game I love to play.
I'm sure this is the kind of tip a teacher won't give away until you have signed up for lessons, because it really changes a lot of golfers whole perspective about the swing...
Mr. Bann, you are absolutely genius! I think this is the single most important lesson every amateur golfer should watch. It is this exact position that is described as the putting the club in the "slot". I never understood and knew what the "slot" was until I felt my club drob in to the "slot" after watching this video. Now my club feels weight less, as described my so many professional golfers. Thank you SOOOO MUCH!!!
This shouldn't be called a tip it should be called a lesson. Because short video will get millions of people off in the right direction. I've played for almost 20 years and no one has ever explained the the backswing that simple to me. So I know this will help others.
I think that's the point he is making! You can take the club back many different ways depending on more or less of a draw or fade. ALL golf pros swing the club up and down! That is the only way to consistently return the club.
golf is an illusion. while some sweep the ball. The pros chop down on the ball like an ax making sure they touch the other side of the ball. Just do some research.
F...... ledgy !!!

You should advise camondrums to start the downswing with the hips AND the shoulders. this is a fantastic explanation of the proper backswing, and has improved my swing immensely.

In my opinion, this is not the only correct way to swing the arms. Players like Immelman, ZJohnson, swing their arms more around the body.

I think that's the point he is making! You can take the club back many different ways depending on more or less of a draw or fade. ALL golf pros swing the club up and down! That is the only way to consistently return the club.
It's the illusion! Get an impact ball.

what is an impact ball?

google impact ball. It is a blue and yellow ball that show you how to move your arms through impact.

golf is an illusion. while some sweep the ball. The pros chop down on the ball like an ax making sure they touch the other side of the ball. Just do some research.
