Eerily, the great film critic, Pauline Kael, wondered in an early review of Hartman's work if she would be strong enough to make it in the cut throat movie business. I think Hartman should have won the Best Actress Oscar in 1965.
My all time favorite movie is Patch of Blue. Hartman should have won an award for her portrayal of Selina - fabulous actress, who deserved more than she got in life.

For Elizabeth
I was so pleased to see how well you had done. I wanted to see how far you had come. I read and read and then I stoped, my heart and soul had seemingly floped. How can this be? this isnt true, there's been a mistake written about you. I search other places but they are all the same. They talk about more than just your fame.
It says you were sad, weak and depressed, my heart anlmost poped out of my chest. It hurts so much, what do I do? I wish and wish that I only knew. What gave you the nerve, the strength and the might, to leave us all on that tragic night? I will never know but I still cry and ask why oh why did you have to die. We love you so much, at peace may you be, thank you so much for inspireing me.
my other comment didnt go through..a patch of blue made me cry..i was 11 when i saw it in 84..my teacher was a black man who showed it to us..he asked me why i cried and i said because it was beautiful..it also reminded me of grwoing up in the south and hearing how people were so rascist..it was hard growing up there..i had to move north to get away from it to gain some santiy...thank god for obama tuesday jan 20th is tomorrow!
My aunt was a very good friend of Miss Hartman and knew she had suffered from depression but didn't know how bad it was until it was too late. Aside from the depression Miss Hartman struggled with finances, schizophrenia, and believe it or not her own sexuality. (Yes, she was bi-sexual). Anyway, she was a very great lady indeed. Very quiet but also very kind hearted and loving. I never met her but my aunt has plenty pictures with her and it's great to hear how amazing this woman was.

WOW, I had no idea Miss Hartman was going through all of that. I knew of her depression, but the rest is news to me!! I fell so awful!! At least she in a better place now... No more suffering!! You and your aunt are blessed to have pictures to look at. I wish i had them to look at also!! I miss her so much!!Thanks for the information.
@lafingtall yes, and I am willing to bet that those finances would have been much better had more males hired her for parts that she was probably more qualified for, but possibly did not get due to not looking like a quote "sex goddess" type. Although Barbra Darling was a very sexy role. as for the schizophrenia, I would be interested in knowing how long she had been dealing with such a diagnosis. Bisexuality can have many definitions.
@TheWildswan69 when you say "struggling with bisexuality, I would be interested to know do you mean she was wanting to be with women sexually, but was afraid to explore that due to fear of other peoples opinions? I had never heard about that.
Thanks for this. I acted with Miss Hartman in the late 70's, when I was a child, and she was a lovely person who spent a great deal of time talking to me and sharing her thoughts about her (our) craft. I knew even at the time that she struggled with depression, but her talent and goodness always shone through.

I'm really impressed. I first was aware of Miss Hartman's talent when I saw The Secret of NIHM. I wanted to know more about her and found out that she was in A Patch of Blue. I saw that and her performance could still brake my heart. It's such a shame that she is no longer with us because I really she was a great actress and very adorable.
It isn't you or any other person saying anything wrong, it is just a prankster because it is nearly every comment on other peoples video's that i did. I have a guess whom it could be, but i'm not too sure.
Listen to "Because Selena's A Girl" is a very good tribute to Elizabeth Hartman, if you love this one, you will love the music, and the singer's voice of the other. If God asked people would you like to have Elizabeth around for 43 years, so her family can enjoy her, and the world to enjoy her in ground breaking films or not at all. This is what Tim Russett of (Meet the Press), son said at his memorial service, and this is how we should see it of her death.A loss if she had not been around at all
Truly a beautiful woman and extreamly talented. I just seen A patch of Blue and it was a performance to remember. It's just so sad how her life ended but i know she's found peace.
Hi FB--Wow! A 19-year-old who knows of Elizabeth Hartman. I saw 'A Patch of Blue' in 1965, the year it came out, and have never forgotten it; she gave a heart-rending performance. I'd be interested to know how you came across this film. Thanks for the tribute. LJ
Thanks for the tribute,it was nicely done.I always thought she was a great actress, and A Patch of Blue was a marvellous film.So sad that she died at only 43.
I agree with you guys...her voice was undescibable. It sounded so...gentle and shy. In my opinion i think It is a voice that can never be imitated of such talent! =)
She actually looks like Mrs. Brisby!
No wonder she got the part!
