What I did not like about this movie is the fact that did not tell the audience why Israel went into Lebanon. The Reason: PLO terrorists after being expelled from Jordan(Palestine) in what became as the Black September terrorist group, ended up in Lebanon and the PLO made incursions and fire missiles into Israeli northern border and so on. The same as Hezbollah nazis did in 06. And after the sabra and chatilla, this film did not tell audience that 500 thousand march in tel aviv afterwards...
@tomnikond600 I understand your point, but in the end of the day, the purpose of the movie is to tell a personal story of a simple man in the days of war.
This movie doesn't suppose to be a commercial for Israeli military activities. I also disagree with most of the Israelis that think that this movie is pure pro-Arab. This movie show the horror of war from both sides: An Israeli soldier that without looking from one side, and an Arab boy (10 years old) that used as soldier from the other side.
@bobobububu u think right..this movie shows the horrors of war..in a fashion that is shocking,surreal..and way better to understand as any warmovies before.u understand the situation of people in wars more better,u understand what it is to be humans captured, unconscious and helpless in times without morality.a MASTERPIECE.
According to Robert Fisk in his book "The Great War for Civilisation: The Conquest of the Middle East", pp.484,488–489, Israeli defence minister at that time Ariel Sharon and Chief of Staff Rafael Eitan met with the Lebanese Phalangist militia units, inviting them to enter the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps and telling them the PLO fighters were responsible for the assassination of their leader Bashir Gemayel. This is the core information that was neglected/distorted in this movie.
War is stupid, and 9 times out of 10, unjustified. WW2 was one of very few wars that was justified, at least on the part of the Allies and the Soviets.
A curious detail: I've just watched the Spanish dub of this movie and I am sure that the woman emerging from the sea and coming into the boat was nude. Why is she wearing a bikini on this trailer????
Sorry, but there is no excuse for the things that happened. Sure, there's always another side, but no matter what it was nothing justifies killing innocents.
This movie is not only a political masterwork but it is a huge step in animation like it is so unique it has a whole new feel that kinda takes you there. It shows more emotion.
poor Israelis....from victims to slaughterers, and now poor them the have psychological problems and need to re-create the history το find a scape goat and save their self from the shadows. May be in 20 years they will produce another animation and they will say that Aliens slaughter 1500 people in Gaza in 2008-9
This is beautiful and yet depressing. Makes me think of how tragic war must be. Here, on something as banale as the internet, we are young people from many different countries...
Let's not start any wars against each other, friends? We may speak different languages and have different flags... but we are all one.

This movie is full of bulshit....every thing in it is just lies, it's not the christian phalangiste who killed all those refugies but israeli's commando and some christian milita men.....and for t1201971, Bashir couldn't ordered this massacare simply because he was already dead :) the people who did that are murederers but are not the christian phalangist as it is said in the movie, a lot of other stories told in the movie are also lies....
...alongside discarded U.S. army ration tins, Israeli army medical equiptment and empty bottles of whiskey." This is all from Robert Fisk's book on the Lebanese civil war "Pity the Nation". The title is from a Khalil Gibran poem: "Pity the nation that acclaims the bully as hero, and that deems the glittering conquerer bountiful."
...lazy and terrible profusion where they had been knifed or machine-gunned to death." "...there were women lying in houses with their skirts torn up to their waists and their legs wide apart, children with their throats cut, rows of young men shot in the back after being lined up at an execution wall. There were babies- blackened babies because they had been slaughtered more than 24 hours earlier and their small bodies were already in a state of decomposition- tossed into rubbish heaps...
The Israeli "Defense" Forces provided the logistics necessary for the Phalangists to carry this massacre out. Journalist Robert Fisk describes what he saw: "The murderers- the Christian militiamen whom Israel had let into the camps to 'flush out terrorists'- had only just left. In some cases, the blood was still wet on the ground. When we had seen a hundred bodies, we stopped counting. Down every alleyway, there were corpses- women, young men, babies and grandparents- lying together in...
The Bashir in the title is Bashir Gemayel, the leader of the Christian fascist Lebanese Phalange, who, together with Ariel Sharon, ordered the massacre of thousands of Palestinians at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in Sept. 1982.
I'm from lebanon, i didnt see the movie yet (i think it will be forbiden here) but i would love to! the trailer is great and i know all the story of the war and specialy Bashir....
this film is incredible. i saw it today. the ending can be perfectly summed up with the quote from the movie: "and then the horrific silence of death."
Just saw it today brilliant and powerful. A live action of this film would do it no justice what so ever. kondurperufour you should cast that narrow minded logic aside and go see it and perhaps you understand why you're getting minus numbers on your replies. Of course perhaps seeing it won't change a thing and if thats the case all I can say is its a real pity.
the reason the film is so good is becasue its animated! otherwise ud have a run of the mill documentory. the animations distances u enough from real likfe to submerge u and helps u to look at war without the politics and history. this film is amazing precisley becasue its animated. it also makes the real footage at the end really hit home.
maybe u did but because I didnt really know much about the conflict and know even less about the complicated politics of the middle east it only prompted me to look into all those things AFTER id seen it. During it didnt really figure becasue it is much more about the people....and clips of bad porn :-p
Have you seen the movie? If you have, you'd know that one of the HUGE themes of the entire work is completely dependent on it being animated. It's far more than just a gimmick.
At the end they show actual footage of the events recorded at the time. The issue of Israel's role in its defense against a mostly hostile Arab world as matched again the eventual role of the IDF in Lebanon and Gaza as dangerously Nazi like invaders is the subject of the film at large. Israel can thank the British Empire for their wisdom giving them back their old territory. The British promised them after WWII a place to call home back in then Palestine and set them home among their enemies.
In recent interview the director, Ari Folman, was very disappointed Germans didn't go to see the film. He thinks they were afraid of the theme.
Ari Folman says its because the German media promotion portraied it as film about "massacre, and the Germans from whatever reason don't want to see film about massacres. May I ask you if the Germans were also unease about the mention of words like "I've become Nazi myself" and "My parantes were at Auschwitz" or "it reminiscent me the Warsaw ghetto"?
What I did not like about this movie is the fact that did not tell the audience why Israel went into Lebanon. The Reason: PLO terrorists after being expelled from Jordan(Palestine) in what became as the Black September terrorist group, ended up in Lebanon and the PLO made incursions and fire missiles into Israeli northern border and so on.
