Coventry, in 1885, although there were non-chain drive versions before that even. By the 1890s NYC bike messengers were using them and it sort of went from there into urban street racers called "scorchers."

Some of the younger folk have only found out about it recently though and, as younger folk are prone to do, think they invented it.

@W4lkst4r Well, ty for not being put off by my level of sarcasm. To be fair American bike culture fell into tatters in 1930 and nearly went extinct in the 50s. Only a small number kept fixed gear riding alive and they were almost all amateur track racers and messengers in the NYC and Chicago areas; so American youth have some excuse for thinking it started in NYC/Chicago in the 60s.

England has always had a fixed wheel culture, so I don't know what excuse their youth have; other than youth.
