Lol, here in the Netherlands we use this for fun with the iro old milk canisters.. Some even go as far as making one as huge cannons... X-D Just search for Carbid Schieten and you will get allot of video's...
@astrosfan316 We followed a modified version of William Gurstelle's Backyard Ballistics. To make it black we just used spray paint, the naval carriage is custom and only roughly to scale. We're working on an Civil War style Army carriage now that we have found some affordable wheels. I'll be adding a link to the description soon that has the directions we followed.
Not particularly, but there are hazards. My state in particular forbids anything fired by compress air or chemical reaction without proper permits (hunting, fireworks, shooting ranges, etc. where appropriate).
@kazack66 this isn't gunpowder is a mineral named carbide which produce acetylene gas when combined white h20. And when that gets ignited it will burn white a bang
@zwartje66100 It isn't quite literally a mineral since it isn't naturally occurring, but is instead man-made/produced, and its actual name is calcium carbide [carbide alone is a polyatomic ion that is C2^2-].
Close but those ratios don't change when he exhausts it. Rather he is trying to get the same acetylene to air/oxygen ratio (you breath out more than just CO2 and a little bit of Bernoulli's principle comes into play so breath works).
The cannon is actually my dad's, but he used my book Backyard Ballistics as his basic outline. From there he modified it to add a sparker as a lighter (like the book has for the Spud Gun) and then he added a T-intersection near the back to make it easy to clean out. The naval carriage he just built on his own, but if you look at the video close (and the other couple that I have posted) you should be able to figure it out.
Also, he's working on building another Army style cannon and was hoping to have it done for today (the 4th) with large wagon wheels and all. I think that he is going to post directions on Instructables as to how to build each.
I'll check out your videos later this weekend and look forward to you posting the others.
yeah have that in front of your door and if robbers come...

@bacdaddy He's blowing the waste gas (mostly CO2) out to allow the acetylene to build up better.

Do you have a set of plans for that cannon?
I have a book called "Backyard Ballistics", which
shows one, but yours is much nicer (I love the naval cannon carriage).
Today (July 4th) I'll be finishing up a tennis
ball cannon adapted from the spudgun plans.
Have a look at my Valveless Pulsejet videos too
(Maybe I'll video & post the tennis ball cannon... if it works!)

Just a quickie reply:
The tennis ball combustion cannon worked well.
Took some experimenting - found 1.5 sec of Berryman B-12 chemtool carb cleaner and a shot of air from the airhose worked great.
Eventually I'll buil an artillery piece w/ motorcycle wheels to tow behing my Ural for car/bike shows.

that's wicked :D
WeaZear 4 years ago
I am confused at the end, did that gentleman blow into the cannon, suck something out or simply got tired and bent down to go to sleep on the cannon?
Mindbattler 4 years ago
Tried to blow out the waste/exhaust gas and thereby allow the acetylene gas to build up again.
mrericsully 4 years ago
I wish I had that cannon! Very cool!
