  • Given this was his first outing he has much to learn and am sure he will mature on from this race! (I hope so!!) We all have to start somewhere and being the full younger brother to such a famous horse is a MASSIVE handicap in my (ever so humble) opinion!!!

  • Man, Nicanor, you didn't fo so good! *laughing out loud!* Better luck next time bud!

  • I think something happened in the gate that made him finish bad... not serious just a little thing, but that is what I heard

  • no propably not. its to late in season. but if hes good enough, he could run in the breeders cup.

  • if hes 3 now will he run in the derby this year?

  • was Edgar Prado onboard?

  • Yes!

  • Prado earned the honor!!!Nic has done well since that . .

  • Nicanor you are the best I wonder if your brother Barbaro was with you when you were racing. I hope that you will feel better soon Nicanor. I love you and your brother Barbaro. Good luck next time. You rock.

  • Everytime I come on here this rating is bumped down to 4 stars. This is irritating me. I wonder who is doing this. ARGH!

  • whew im glad that it is only a minor injury.i wish him good luck in his next race & thank god edgar realized nicanor had a injury

  • Thank God is an understatment. Had it been ANY other jockey, Nicanor would have been in trouble or worse. Sometimes the best jockeys don't win all the races. Sometimes the best horses don't win the races. That is always something to keep in mind. :)

  • A grabbed quarter is typically just a superficial injury that happens very often. Prado likely had no idea that Nicanor had injured himself, just that the horse didn't feel comfortable. At no point was Nicanor in danger of breaking down due to a minor scrape.

  • Did you see the picture of the chunk of his hoof that was taken off? It really looks bad. :-( Edgar always does the right thing.

  • Edgar is a great jockey, that has a great heart. he did the right thing to save nicanor for another day. cause nicanor could easily be dead right now. and thats the least we want right now since barbaro is gone ): He gave it his all, thats all we ask of him. i believe he has what it takes to be as great as barbaro or go even farther, thats what barbaro would want for him <3

  • "Nicanor had grabbed his left quarter in the scramble out of the gate. 'Grabbing a quarter' is a term used to describe a horse overreaching with a hind foot and striking/raking the heel/hoof of a front foot, sometimes causing tremendous damage, just ask Big Brown. The injury was found after the race and was reported as a "slight injury. Well just have to see how long it takes to heal." his connections said.

How much did this effected Nicanor's performance? Only Nicanor knows."

  • OK straight from Prado.

"He (Nicanor) is better than that, said his jockey, Edgar Prado. Ive worked him in the mornings, and he showed me a lot. He broke really fast and unfortunately grabbed his left quarter. Well just have to see how long it takes to heal, but I know hes better than that".

After suffering the injury, Nicanor wasnt comfortable, so Edgar just wrapped up on him, said the colts trainer, Michael Matz.

  • Sorry about the double post. I thought I was in a different site. Woops.

  • he had a bad break--grabbed a quarter--still showed some promise with his charge up to mid pack--this idea that only great horses are undefeated--it irks me...lol--the awesome stardom bound lost a couple--eight belles lost a couple--and yes--the great secretariat---this was a good learning experience for nicanor--he knows what its like to get dirt in his face--jostled around---can't wait for his next race:)

  • OK the real deal here is that Prado did the right thing. Nicanor was injured right from the gate, Edgar knew it and was NOT going to take a chance with this very famous horse. I quoted some things in this thread that came from Edgar and Matz. Nicanor did not lose that race. He was pulled up and rightly so. He has a wonderful jockey. He is in the barn on four legs!! NOT in the ground because he was ran to death to the wire on a injury. That is the bottom line.

  • I believe that Eight Belles would be OK today had she had a more experienced jockey on her. Not that Gabe is a bad jockey but he is just starting his career. She really needed a jockey that could and would have been able to stop her before that fall. I loved her :(

  • Nicanor will be just fine

  • Well, he did his best. Maybe next time he'll win. After all, Secretariat finished fourth in his debut. Let's hope he'll come back strong.

  • He wouldn't be doing better in the next race if he had been pushed to the finish line. Thank GOD for Prado. Smart jockey there. Edgar did the right thing.

  • My heart sank when I heard Nicanor was injured today. I don't want to believe it! I can't help but wonder though & hope someone can answer my questions: If Edgar knew that Nicanor was hurt, why did he finish the race rather than pull him up? Also, is it training, jockey style or coincidense that both Barbaro and Nicanor "break" so hard from the gate?

  • Edgar didn't let him finish the race. He let him slowly run to the wire.

We got a horrible break, Prado said. He stumbled out of the gate. After that, I realized we didnt have much today. I thought I could get him in position to do something after the start, but he just didnt have anything after that. I didnt want to do anything stupid.

  • Thank you for answering my question and for your well informed posts in this thread. There is much I don't about the world of thoroughbred racing. I'm *very* relieved to know Edgar pulled Nicanor up and what an amazing jockey he must be indeed! Pulling up a well trained thoroughbred must be like trying to stop a freight train at full steam. Thank God for Edgar and prayers that Nic will heal 100%! ...and (((hugs))) for Mr and Mrs Jackson.

  • Yeah Edgar didn't pull him up completely but what he did was go to the outside and let Nicanor slow himself down at his own pace. Edgar before the far turn made this decision. When he pulled Barbaro up, that was a mirical. That is what needed and should have been done with Eight Belles. You don't put a young jockey on a grade one racehorse. That was a big mistake. Edgar would have been able to stop her.

  • Edgar evidently knows what he's doing and I know the man has a heart. Same with Matz. The Jacksons make their choices/decisions based on the wonderful people they are. I was just so upset about Nicanor yesterday, thus the emotional tone of my initial comments. I'm not saying anything "bad" about ,Saez really - was just taken back about the way he walked away from Belles. So different than Edgar's reaction when Barbaro broke down. :(

  • Gabe is a good jockey that is true, BUT he should not have been on her in the KD. She needed a jockey that was a lot more experienced and I think that could have made the difference. He had to get out of the way but he didn't have to walk away. Edgar had to get out of the way too with Barbaro but he at least stayed with the horse.

  • Yeah well the differnence between Gabe and Edgar is night and day. Gabe is young and not been on a lot of horses, Edgar has been on thousands. Gabe's whole circle is much different than Edgars. The people are way more caring in the Babaro circle than with Gabes. Not his fault. He needs more experience and a different owner to work for. I believe that would make a big difference. One that is more into loving the horse than the money.

  • Edgar is the best jockey. He has a heart. he loves the horse. What is ironic about this is what happened to Nicanor yesterday is the same thing that happened to Barbaro. The two hooves slamming into each other. With Barbaro, it was a lot worse and it took every bit of strength that Edgar had to stop him. He wanted to keep on running on three legs. Edgar saved Barbaro that day as he did Nicanor yesterday. :)

  • ugly looking injury.

  • Just be very greatful that he had Prado on him. Any other jockey would have not slowed him down. They would have still tried to win the race and he could very well be a dead horse right now instead of in the barn cozy, loved and eating his hay, oats and apples. Edgar has a heart. That is more important than mloney.

  • lol he wouldnt have died from being ridden harder. it would just probably make the injury worse

  • He could have broke down with a jockey that wasn't Edgar. I don't think any of this is funny. If you think it is funny then you have a serious problem.

  • He tore a quarter down to the bulb on one of his hind hooves as he left the gate, as reported on HRTV. It's the same kind of injury that Big Brown had. But Big Brown had chronic hoof problems and Nicanor doesn't. Freak accident. He'll be back to race soon.

  • Nicanor grabbed his left quarter, he stumbled at the start and he was bumped

  • Good thing Edgar is a hero I love hima nd Nicanor. I wonder if Barbaro was cheering him on

  • I agree with you. Edgar is the ONLY one that should ride this horse. I am sure that Barbaro was right beside him.

  • lol you're the one with the mental problem. "barbaro riding right there with him" WTF are you talking about? idiot

  • His spirit. You need to get off this blog.

  • yeah I know weird. wish he would stop raving on about how who is a good/bad jockey etc..

  • He probably was... saying "It's OK, you'll be fine." Barbaro will be with him through his whole life.

  • I just heard Nicanor was injered. I think he will be ok. Pray for Nicanor

  • Yes, he will be perfectly fine.

He'll race again in no time.

  • He (Nicanor) is better than that, said his jockey, Edgar Prado. Ive worked him in the mornings, and he showed me a lot. He broke really fast and unfortunately grabbed his left quarter. Well just have to see how long it takes to heal, but I know hes better than that.

After suffering the injury, Nicanor wasnt comfortable, so Edgar just wrapped up on him, said the colts trainer, Michael Matz.

  • "Nicanor stumbled at the start and was bumped. He was eighth after the first quarter mile, but by the half-mile point had improved his position to fifth. He faded after that " This and my other post are quoted from Bloodhorse.

  • He is OK. Edgar did not want to push him. He did the right thing. I am glad that Nicanor has Edgar and the whole team that Barbaro did. This is the new Nations horse. The news is un-real today. This horse is loved by thousands that aren't even racing fans.

  • Thanks for posting.

  • Poor Ncanior mabey we will do better next time

  • Thanks so much for posting this so fast!

  • Thanks for this vid. Thank GOD he had the right jockey on him today. I can only imagine that pressure. Glad he is on his way back to the barn on 4 legs.

  • it was only his maiden im sure he will do better in his next race

  • Edgars nerves were probably shot.

  • Thank you so much

  • Nic has the potential...just needs the focas

  • Thanks for posting. Glad all came home safe.
