I saw Jeff Coffin in concert at a Jazz Festival earlier this year, I've been a huge fan ever since. It's really inspired me to continue with my Alto Saxophone and continue to get better. I love jazz because of its freedom and the way you can express yourself. Jeff Coffin has become one of my idols.
I was trying to get some guys at a jam to play this last night but all the drummers were afraid to do second-line :] I think what makes this song great is that the crew is jam-packed with studs, and also all the little things everyone contributes to the groove.
@interloperftv That would be me. I just purchased the pocket camcorder when I recorded this, and used the on-camera mic. Now, I have an external mic which is much much better.
@JazzVideoGuy Oh my god, you're so lucky!!! To be able stand in the middle of this magic, right next to these jazz monsters, it's something the average Joe doesn't get the chance to do every day.
I know people will hate me for saying this, because I hate it when people say this type of stuff, but Jeff coffin played the same stuff over and over again in his solo. super redundant. He is a good player....but Mintzer is a modern jazz giant.
Coffin's playing reminds me a lot of James Carter in style, but he doesn't take it over the top like Carter does. A lot more "modest", if you will. Good playing.
The 17 Sharp Scale is the F# Major Scale, here it si:
F#, G#, A#, B, C#, D#, E
Here it is the same scale wrote as a E## Major Scale (E## = F#)
E##, F###, G###, A##, B##, C###, D##
A B Minor scale transposed on a Bb became a C#minor Scale, that, in the same way, can be thougth as an B## minor Scale, that have not 17, but 16 sharps.
(B##, C###, D##, E##, F###, G##, A##)
In any case, you can easily add 12 sharp (1 octave) to the notes you are playing, the result will be the same scale ^^
Both guys are amazing in the fact they can each craft a solo in such a different and have both sound incredible! Also I think it was pretty interesting to hear the rhythm section during both Coffin's and Mintzer's solos. I feel like Felix went to more of a walking bass line at points with Mintzer. Such great musicianship all around! Thanks for posting!
Whoa is Jaco's son on the bass? And I see nothing with comparing two player's styles, and preferring one's style to another. It just needs to be done critically.
How cool is it that Bob's sharing the platform with the son of Jaco (Word of Mouth). Man I would've loved to be there. Jeff Apt Q-258 Sipe on drums. Kofi on keys as well. WOW!
@SimonBak90 Not really sure. Thats what Colonel Bruce Hampton called him when he was playing in the Aquarium Rescue Unit (ARU). If you know anything about Col Bruce then you know it could mean.....anything or nothing at all.
They're all slammin in their own way. They all moved me with their solos. Ain't that what it's all about?? If we all played the same shit on music it wouldn't be interesting, and it certainly wouldn't be jazz. Brett, you are the man! Another great upload!
Jeffs blues/pentatonic licks dont really stand up against the creativity of Bob Mintzer. No doubt Jeff is awesome but Mintzer is just on another level - its in F# for tenor as well!
@JazzVideoGuy You know, Brett, it's so easy for people (WHsaxguy very much falls into this category) to criticize other players and say "oh, well, he's only playing this scale or chord, or pattern over and over and yadda yadda yadda...." It's TOTALLY DIFFERENT if they can ACTUALLY PLAY THIS ON THEIR OWN HORN!!!
Jeff Coffin will always be one of the all time grats IMHO. Wonderful as always, my friend! Thanks for uploading this.
@1979saxman wasnt really a criticism, i just prefer the creative side to the largely 'chopsy' approach. As Brett said - two very different approaches. as far as playing on my own horn, I'm constantly striving to achieve what each of these great players have given us here, along with what the past generation has left behind. ill thank you to not put me in this 'category' of yours
Excellent!!!!

( like foxygrampa said before me, trasposing a 2 Sharps scale to a Bb pitched instrument take them to 4 sharps. 4+12 = 16 sharps.
In any case, Jeff seems to say "Si, Si, Seventeen", like he wanted to say "sixteen", but he wasn't so shure to say the rigth thing =P )

The key of B minor has 2 sharps.. Which when transposed to their Bb pitched Tenor Saxophones would take them to 4 sharps; not 17 lol
OTHER THAN THAT THIS WAS EPIC!!!
foxygrampa 10 months ago
@foxygrampa
Jeff obviously was thinking of this scale:
A#### C### D## E## F### G## A##
Just so happens he missed a sharp, there's 18! =P
