Continued existence of the Turkish state, between the years 1299-1923. Eastern Europe, Southwest Asia and North Africa, and expanded its territory until the 16th century, the most powerful empire the world has become.
@GudMuzlim786 Well...I think Sultanahmet is a beautiful mosque, but the sense of space in Haghia Sophia is much more impressive. Also you have to remember that the entire interior of Hagia Sophia was covered in mosaics, and it would have had an incredibly beautiful iconostasis. When the Ottomans took Constantinople, they looted that, plastered over the mosaics, etc. So even today, with some restoration, you only see a shadow of what it once was.
@sazji Huh? Tell me how the space in Hagia Sophia is more impressive than the Blue Mosque's!? The Ottomans actually found the Church as a pile of crap! The Sultan ordered for it's clean up and restoration! Read your bloody history! And everyone knows the fact that beautiful intricate designs are much better than plain idols!
@GudMuzlim786 Well, for one thing it's a much larger dome, on much thinner columns, whereas the ones in Sultanahmet (as beautiful as they are) are much heavier. Hagia Sophia really is vast. Yes you're right, Haghia Sophia had been seriously damaged 2 centuries early by the 4 crusade, and that was its peak, but the "restoration" of Byzantine churches involved plastering or painting over all the mosaics because they had images that were prohibited in Islam.
@sazji I agree it's a larger dome, but that doesn't mean anything! A majority of people will look at a mighty buildings shape, quality and design! The Sultan Ahmed Mosque has these things! Hagia Sophia had them but not any longer! The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is the successor to the Hagia Sophia if you ask me! So stop your ridiculous assumptions, your not a bloody engineer and face the fact that The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is superior than the Hagia Sophia!
@GudMuzlim786 Why do you put words into my mouth that I did not say? Did I say that Haghia Sophia was superior to Sultanahmet? Did you read what I wrote to the other guy who insulted it? I think they are both beautiful buildings, each with its own special qualities. To appreciate one does not mean I have to say bad things about the other. If your love of Islam or Islamic architecture means that you have to call something as majestic as Haghia Sophia "crappy," then that says lots about you.
@Gudmuzlim786 I have a question for both you, and MrNMT69 and everyone else who posts this kind of nonsense: Why does being a Greek mean you have to be blind to any beautiful thing a Turk or Muslim has done? And why should being a Turk or a Muslim mean that you have to denigrate what a Christian has done? Sultanahmet, a beautiful mosque with just a "copy?" Hagia Sophia - one of the wonders of the world, "crappy?"
@GudMuzlim786 well my friend,i love istanbul and turkish people,i really do.i visited istanbul and its sightseeings twice.let's get real here,Hagia Sofia is something unique and the Blue Mosque, which is fascinating too,is something that looks a lot like the church Byzantins built years earlier.
@maouro85 Yes I understand what you're trying to say, but the truth is that the Hagia Sophia gave the turks an idea when they conquered Contantinople. And like I said before, they improved the design of the Hagia Sophia in a better, extraordinary form. The result is The Blue Mosque. It is only gives a slight resemblance of a Byzantine church e.g. design of the domes. I did mention before that the Hagia Sophia may have a larger dome but people will look at a buildings shape, quality and design!
@GudMuzlim786 ok,then we agree that it's not a crappy church,as you said.surely,as people use to say,the original is always better.i say that in a good way.imagine now,in 2012 the turks to built a better and bigger mosque than blue mosque.is there any chance of you thinking the new building is better than the blue mosque?of course not.both buildings are spectacular, magnificant, unique.we are too hamble to judge them.
The Islamic architecht where always superior to the ''western'' architecht building systems. Even today the world stil uses the Islamic way of architect and building systems. In the days that the Muslims had Beatifull Mosques with running whater, the Crusaders in England and France had cold castles with no running whater and no highley sufisticated systems of building.
@MrNMT69 Come one - yes of course they were inspired by Byzantine tradition, no doubt. But it's not a "copy." The Ottomans also brought their own elements which were a synethesis of styles from all the areas they'd come through. A mosque also has a very different aesthetic - Orthodox churches tend to shut out the world, and the light, while mosques let in the light. The tilework in the Ottoman mosques is truly beautiful, not to mention the calligraphy which the Ottomans perfected.
@sazji Yes I agree with you now. I've noticed that your aren't biased but it's just that many Christians make such hurrendous remarks against the Mosques that it I just have to speak against their dull lifeless churches! Do you understand?
@GudMuzlim786 I think it's important to remember though, that so much of the "life" in these buildings is what we bring into them. As much as I might appreciate the architecture or form of a mosque, I know I'm not seeing it in the same way as a Muslim sees it, because I don't have all those cultural associations. Orthodox chuches often strike Muslims as "dark." They are - because the whole spirit of a church - ekklisia, "shutting out" - is to create a place separate from worldy concerns. (cont)
@GudMuzlim786 But for a Greek who goes into a church, there are as many cultural associations as there are for a Muslim entering a mosque, the mystical sense, and the sense of history are very important. I think both sides have a tendency to look from only their own sides, and when they don't see things that correspond to their inner world, it might seem there's "nothing there," It's like words...they're symbols, but if we don't have the meaning of the word, they're just a string of sounds.
@sazji Don't get me wrong, I don't hate all churches!
But in fact I personally think that the ones in Spain are tremendous only because they were built by the muslims themselves when they were under Christian rule! The muslims were known as Mudéjar and their architecture was Moorish, which is one of the best architecture in Islam that even the Christians copied! The Christians named it Neo-Moorish or Moorish Revival architecture! Truly, the Churches in Spain are the Best of all Churches!

@MrNMT69 Haha..You make me laugh!
Do you really think the ottomans would copy your crappy church!
They actually improved the church's design and architecture by building the Blue Mosque!
And in my opinion the Blue Mosque seems more superior than the Hagia Sophia!
