Mort broke a lot of barriers and is part of the reason we have what we have on TV today...not sure that's a good thing...although I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed it at the time.
I do have to say this, it was a classy move by MCA to keep Phil Tonken and Ted Mallie on the payroll after the sale and call letter change. Pre-MCA, there were no cartoons on 9, so it was kinda neat to hear Tonken do a promo for Bugs and Daffy in 1987.
Mort was part of the whole "re-imaging" done when WOR was taken over by Universal and became WWOR in 1987...they replaced the Million Dollar Movie w/Ent. Tonight @ 8, Evening Magazine @ 8:30 (or was it the other way around?), then Mort @ 9...my dad used to watch him every night, I couldn't really get into it since I was only 8 @ the time...LOL
Yep..I was a little older than you (13 in 1988) so I was fascinated by Mort. I distictly remember having to be home by 9 every night during summer vacation and hoping that whatever the topic was, there'd be a lot of screaming, yelling and (the best) someone getting tossed off the show. The amazing thing is how quick Mort came and went. WWOR later moved him to 11:30 and that seemed to be the death knell. If I remember right, toward the end he was on at like 1 in the morning!
Yeah, that was early in 89, when Arsenio Hall first arrived on the late night scene...Ch. 9 originally aired his show @ 12:30 AM, but when they saw the ratings he was pulling in, they moved it up an hour to 11:30, swapping time slots w/Mort in the process...you def knew he was toast @ that point.
I read his book.He did a whole lot of civil rights work, and government.Good singer as well, he was the first white artist signed to the Stax label in Memphis.
Mort for President! Mort, I miss ya, buddy, RIP. I always watched your show.
