saying that densmore was one of the best drummers ever is going a little too far don't you think? ever heard of john bonham, buddy rich, gavin harrison, jojo meyer, virgil donati, benny greb, david garibaldi, terry bozzio, steve smith, dave weckl, vinnie colaiuta, steve gaad, ginger baker,etc.etc.etc....actually he wasn't even in the top 1000...but the doors were great for the particular sound they had (and jim's lyrics) and he was adequate in that band
@7294smk Bakersfield, CA aka Nashville West was (and maybe still is) a thriving musical area in the 1960's. A lot of bands played there back in the day.
This is the real deal. Nothing and nobody beats The Doors as a Band. They were so complete together. Never heard 4 really fabulous musicians play so good together. Makes me feel homesick in a strange way. Living in the wrong day and age, damnit.
I've always thought Gomez share some influences here. Anyhow, I can't even begin to describe the influence Jim has had on my life. In so many ways. His poetry, songwriting and the musical compositions of Manzarek were so far ahead of their time it's not surprising society couldn't accept them. A tragic tale of magnificence.
this is just awesome footage, thanks so much !! what titles does this boot go under ?anyone got a link or trade ???! I've got lots of this 8mm footage but most of it is so dark it's useless...
@Chrisdrumz it's so sad...he was about as self-destructive as a human can be...all of that talent, decades of God knows what, never happened...maybe things would have been different these days, what with addiction awareness, interventions...oh well...
@Chrisdrumz yes and in my opinion 70/71 was them at there best. i know jim was about fucked physically but music wise was alot more bluesy, heavier and better. Shame, i reckon they prob had at least another one or two blues albums left in them. Rest in piece jim, ill see you in july
Frank Lisciandro says that there's a lot of footage for Feast Of Friends that were never used, hope some day we can see all that in video form like The Hollywood Bowl!!
@GrizzlTooth You're right!!! at about 6:49 to 7:11 Jim throws in some lyrics from Land Ho that mix in well. If anyone finds any other Doors songs with parts of Land Ho ! Please post them!!! Thanx J
If the future is made from the truth, but we read the past, we are only fools, we sense the now and forget to understand, we feel the warmth of our woman, and we stop looking for the Truth, because how fake May have been September comes true, and October gets cold, October U2, my darling, They say it is your Birthday, Happy birthday too, Thou, Dr P&G. ;)))))))))))))))))))):----))))))! Oei. Auw.
John's role was of ultimate importance in the band; Jim knew it, and that's why he repeatedly insisted on John returning upon their mutual quarrels. BTW, John always stresses that one rule to the fellow drummers: "Oftentimes less is more, pauses are important just as the notes". I like his approach, it was very unique, and to tell you the truth even though I'm a huge fan of many rock groups, John's drumming is set on Top 3 in my personal book.
@kokybhakta You got to be kidding hear guy! johns role in the doors was to keep jim strung out long enough so ray could work his magic. its to bad captain hairdew overdosed on a toilet from a drug overdose from what they called a womans drug from that time. thats if he could of kept his hands off his own stick long enough. the doors could of gotten some place..
@HARTLIKEWHEEL lmao obviously you nothing about his death, do sum research before you say things like this kid, one he wasnt found on a toilet, he was found in a bathtub. and two: they say that he was brought back from a club that he was at earlier that night, so thank you sir for making yourself a complete ass.. and third of all, he died when he was 27 if he didnt he wouldnt be a ledgend, do your research on that too, every ledgend died at 27, SO FUCK YOU
Their opposite styles blended perfectly - Ray was r'n'r/blueser, Robby was jazz/blues/flamenco, John was into jazz and Jim wasn't even a singer - he was a poet. Perhaps, each one of them wouldn't have achieved any success on their own, but when they were together - it was completely transcendental. When Jim died, the Trio released 2 more albums, but weren't successful.
I've been a huge Doors fan, for many years. If there wasn't John Densmore in the band, trust me it wouldn't have sounded even 5% good that it did. It may seem strange that I give so much importance to just one man, but that rule applies to the whole band. Without ANY one of them, it would not be The Doors anymore. Each one of them was the perfect fourth of the whole.
@indio77777 No dude, I actually think Densmore was the weakest link of the Doors. He was way to jazzy. If we would of worried more about the groove insted of answering Jims vocals they could of had a much fatter sound live. Don't get me wrong, the Doors are and will always be my favorite band and I do respect John D but even Jim wanted John out a couple times, but they were already signed and everything so they stuck with him.
the ship of fools was a ship in the middle ages that was all asylum inmates packked off to sea to wander the blue....each port they stopped in was high entertainment for the villagers...Jim is referring to this custom
Those Bakersville 'Okies' were either to strait-or stoned to applaud! Myself, came close to seeing them in Miami, but the old econoline brokedown in Perry Fla, and then, the irony, we got busted, hitchn' in Melbourne (JM's birthplace). Course, JM got busted that night too. Always heard the vibe was you had to be down to not be annoyed with JM live, but that Ray, Rob and John were always Pro, and carried him. That was cool. JM-RIP.
