My family had a total of six of these over the years: a brace of hens the first time around, and then a gang of four (three hens and one rooster) the second time.
Of the first two, we handled them a lot from day 1, and one hen, Calico, became very tame. She came when called, sat on laps, laid eggs in my hand (!), and did not object much to being dressed in doll clothes. Her sister was wilder but did stay still to be dressed.
The gang of four feared human touch (we got them at maybe a week).
ive got 2 fayoumis. there really nice birds but get really scared when they see people. you just have to go near them and they will be over the fence in the next field. if they ever get cornered like when i round up the chickens, they really panic. when they are in panic they only go one way. up! like you said what makes them a pain is also what makes them great. there real charecters.
hey! thanks for your video. We have 8 week old chickens, and we just discovered we have a Fayoumi (hen?). We kept wondering why (what we thought was) our Barred Rock was acting psycho and skittish all the time. she will fall asleep in our arms and she is a kick to watch. We want more, since they appear so hearty and entertaining, but it sounds like more would form a gang? She has already been the lead picker at our Polish chicks. can you tell me where i can find more info on Fayoumis?
The Egyptian birds are a mixed bag -they're beautiful and tough but they aren't a good mix with others and, if you like pet style chickens which it appears you do, they aren't very satisfying at all. When we had three females they formed a gang of bullies. I think some Shamo or Malay types from Ideal might be worth looking into.
We started with 3 hens and 2 cocks, Predators got 2 of the hens unfortunately. Since they are flighty you may need to find a different hen to brood the eggs or use an incubator. The cocks especially are trouble to other birds, not sure I would get more...
We know the culprits. Sometime our Maran cock looks rumpless after the Fayoumis are done with him. Guapo runs when the come near him 'ause he's too vain to risk even one feather in a brawl...
sounds like they act like guineas

These are the birds that I need for my free range flock!
I'm afraid to let most of my birds out because of foxes and hawks.
I love their markings, thanks for the educational video!

I do like pets, but I also use chickens as living lawn ornaments. And I'd much rather keep some flighty birds so that my pets aren't being risked.
Thanks for the advice, although Ideal may be to ofar away. I'm in NJ.

How many Fayoumis do you have?
I'm trying to breed them, but the hen won't sit on her eggs!

I am sure that you know - but find out who is 'feather-plucking'. as theres no cure.
Your birds are real 'posers'. Thanks again.
