So what are the U.S. age ratings for films. In Ireland we basically have PG, 12's, 15's, 18's and very rarely 21's. We also had a very conservative censorship until the last 15 years. Movies like 'Life of Brian' were banned outright and even Hitchcock's 'I Confess' with Montgomery Clift was banned because of the priest's relationship with a married woman. I think 'The Exorcist' was also banned for many years.
I gotta give a notice for one of the classics in animated movies: Disney's PINOCCHIO. Even when it's the sweet scenes often depicted in typical Disney fashion, there are a lot of scenes that would hold up with classic horror movie scenes (Stromboli and Monstro always scared me as a kid, and the Donkey transformation is as creepy as any well done Werewolf scene).
I think when most Americans say animation they mean a specific thing. It's not like the episode is called anime hahah, but yeh, the cinefiles can't mention everything.
Mike doesn't see anymore adult themes in modern animation. There are movies being made outside the US! You can't talk about animation and leave anime out completely. Where was Hayao Miyazaki? And where is Akira? And how come you don't mentioned Jan Svankmajer? It's like talking horror and just mention guys like Romero and Carpenter and completely forget about guys like Argento and Fulci. And yes, The Secret of NIMH is great (Oh the video effect was cheesy...!)
So, is Wes Anderson "back" with this one? Cause his past two films were horrible. Hard to believe the same guy made Bottle Rocket and Rushmore. I haven't seen Fantastic Mr. Fox yet.
I love all his films and i understand if you don't. I actually think that Bottle Rocket is his weakest film and Rushmore is his best. But Mr. Fox is just pure joy. Every second of it.
Definitely impressed with this one!! I'm not only a big animation fan, but a big animation history fan. You guys missed a lot of my favorites, but I'm glad you mentioned some. It's a pretty big scope to try and review.
I just watched Bambi last night for the first time in probably seven years, and I still loved it.. One of Disney's more mature and fascinating movies!!!
If Michael wants more cartoon TNA, I highly recommend Haunted Superworld of El Superbeasto. Hilarious movie!!
The reason that miyazaki deserves all of the attention he gets is because of his technique and skill that is matched with a boundless imagination and a great skill for storytelling.
The man draws every movement himself.
i get avoiding the obvious though. I had never thought about the films you guys mentioned on the show
As an animator myself i am glad that you guys covered this topic. Fire and ice, heavy metal, fritz the cat and so on i did see these at a very early age and it did shape my art and animation style to this day. My favorite animated movie besides heavy metal is Rock & Rule. Unearthed films finally released it a few years back and it is worth a look. Thanks
I love Disney, Bakshi, Bluth and all that but if you don't talk about HAYAO MIYAZAKI, you shouldn't have a title like ANIMATION! He is not only the best animation director, but also one of the best filmmakers out there. You were also talking about adult animation, and again i will mention Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke, which is the best animated movie ever made. I just wanna know, if you're reading this, have you(or anyone else of you) seen any of his movies and why didn't you mention them.
I disrespectfully disagree. Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise is the best Japanese animated film. Easily - the reason it's underrated is because it has a slow pace and therefore not a favourite amongst teens. (I didn't really love the film until I was in my twenties.)
You can't say that until you've seen the movie I'm talking about. Yes, Miyazaki is popular and very creative (Ponyo was great and I love Lupin) but he is a poster boy for anime in the West - better stuff has been done that goes under the radar everyday and it deserves attention.
I like the little mermaid and the fox and the hound.

The Snow white ride is my secret shame.. I'm glad I wasn't the only one that got scared shitless during it.

one of my favorite movies in general, not just animation, is the grave of the fireflies.
I love that movie. That and the movie up are the only two animation movies to have ever actually made me cry lol.

I've just noticed this recently....what's up with the picture in this episode???
It looks like it's in Gamma view field (infered ray-like). Is that intentional so they look more animated rotoscope-style or is it a mistake??

Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland was a good one.

The Simpsons Movie was very disappointing. Not funny enough for its length. The Bart dingle joke was the highlight for me.
Best anime I've ever seen, pound for pound, all things considered, Disney included, I HAVE to name "Ninja Scroll" (1993)
Great characters, one more dangerous than the other, classic storyline. and beautiful arterial-sprayin bloody katana action.
