  • This is still one of my favorite albums by Low Rawls...I grew up listen to this all the time! It was one of my mother's saturday's favorites...

  • amazing

  • whole album is amazing

  • Three TOP Lou Rawls songs:

    1. Shadow of Your Smile (written by by Johnny Mandel)

    2. Send in the Clowns (written by by Stephen Sondheim)

    3. St. James Infirmary (Blues standard of unknown origin)

    -----

  • great version! THANKS......

  • A Great Voice, Personality and Paratrooper, 82nd Airborne Division....Hoooahhhhhh

  • DIFFICULT TO PUT DOWN ANYTHING LOU SANG

  • I was driving on I-70 West from Denver to Grand Junction, over the Rockies, past the Eisenhower Tunnel when I heard on the radio that Lou was gone.

  • I learned to play piano by ear to the Lou Rawls LIVE album. My all time fav...I can recite it. Lou has a most distinctive, soulful talent; mixing his playful; intelligent humor throughout. I recommend the album to one & all. The assembly of musicians here very tasty. Wonder if any are still with us? Would love to read about their recollections of the recording event and the era. Searched this tune in memory of my mom; a jazz singer who left us sadly of Cancer a year ago. Musician friend

  • Sing it Lou

  • I declare! This man's voice causes my toes to curl up! What a voice! Lord, have mercy!

  • i would honestly go gay for Lou, if he would even think about letting me have the honour :D

  • recording quality is piss poor... i know its live.. but i make comparisons to others (live recordings) of the era

  • This isn't the best album Lou Lou recorded but this is the one that put him on the map and took him off the "Chittlin' Circuit" as he used to call it. LOL!

  • This is without a doubt the best album Lou Rawls recorded! Check out St. James Infirmary on this one.

  • listen to his vibrato @ 4:02 on the word "gone". its kinda like a leslie speaker: he has his regular vibrato but he adds a quick back and forth, louder-softer volume thing. very cool.

  • this is my favorite version of this sad but beautiful song.

  • One of my favorite albums of all time. Thanks for posting.

  • Lou Rawls sing it my brother!

  • @THRILLAKILLA187 Amen!!!

  • @2009Denisem Double,triple Amen!

  • I won tickets to see Mr. Lou Rawls at a Benefit Dinner in Austin, TX, which was to include meeting and joining him for dessert. The Benefit was cancelled because he became ill. This was in September of 2005, he passed away in January of 2006. It really makes me sad that I'll never have that opportunity again. I was looking so foward to meeting this legend! I am so glad that he music lives on!

  • @Sallywalker1 Awww I feel ur pain and yes thank god his music LIVES ON!!!!! AMEN! they don't make music like this anymore! I'm A doc who loves all kinds of music but Lou rawls was one of my favs! thanks from The Doctor of Detroit!:-)

  • @GeneralTrousers Ok thank you !

  • Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful....

  • Can't stop listening to this, one of my favorites. Sang (what I think is) the original arrangement, SATB and samba for an all county jazz choir. Loving this.

  • Lou and Sam Cooke together, blowing the blue threshold away R.I.P. both you cats.

  • Lou is the BOMB! End of story!

  • Yep- this was the album that officially put Lou Rawls on the map.

The coolest part is having been there to witness it materialize.

  • @CheckMate657879 I remember when this album came out. I remember waking up one morning to KDIA playiing Street Corner Hustler's Blues --- Before Lou was "on the map" he used to appear at the TimeOut Club" 32nd/Telegraph Oakland on a regular. I was too young to get in boohoo even with a fake ID

  • OMG!!!!

    MusicalLyrica---

You're from the Bay? Get outta here. I grew up listening to KDIA. I, too, heard Street Hustler's Blues on that station. Man!

I couldn't get in the clubs either but it was alright. Radio back then - was the bomb.

Those were the coolest times on planet earth. For those who missed it. You missed the hell out of it.

  • @CheckMate657879 This 66 album may have put Lou on the map but those in the know were already on to his talent. Don't forget he backed up Sam Cooke on Bring It On Home To Me in April 1961!!!

  • Mr RAWL'S

  • this is the BEST version!!!

  • love his voice!!! one of a kind! truly amazing version!! goes through u! love it!! outstanding...heart and soul!!!

  • The best version ever of this song. The very soul of the song is in Mr. Rawls voice. It's a pity we cannot have the video of this performance. In any case many thanks for posting. This performance is magic!!!

  • Highly original and inimitable as only Lou could do it.

  • This album started my love for jazz, blues and soul music a long long time ago.

Thank-you Lou. Sing your magic in Heaven

  • This Album all of it....two thumbs up and a solid 10!

  • Thanks for this post as it brings back a magic musical moment for me.I was visiting LA from England, in a a venue where Earle Palmer was the MC and Lou got up from the floor and sung. This memory remains unforgettable.Sad that both these greats are no longer with us . .

  • Such a unique arrangement, and some very soulful singing.

  • what a voice! wonderfull..

  • PERFECTION!*****!

  • I can not begin to explain in intelligent and coherent language how I believe this to be Lou Rawls's best album EVER!! Man, this is such an accomplished live performance by an artist ever. Tank u, Frankey, for the post.

  • Daddy was heavy into this cat. This song played constantly in our house back in the late 60's. It seemed to sound the best 'round Christmas time.

  • BEAUTIFUL......This is just GREAT... !!!!

  • Some Qs people interested in other CK & EP can ask themselves. These are Qs, so anyone giving this post a thumbs down or removing it would be opposed to people asking these Qs (hm).

Did EP think Scherman did a good job on the book?

Did EP ever say he was on Supremes' "Love Child"? Sound like him?

Pick on bass audible on Tops' "Eleanor Rigby," Stevie's "Respect", mono mix of Tops' "Bernadette", Holloway's "Just Look..."?

Did Jamerson ever use a pick?

Where has Brenda said the last was recorded?

  • ouch!

  • A masterful vocalist taking a masterful composition and making it his own.

    What a treat!

  • I was 17 or 18 yrs old when this album came out. I played the cover off of it. In my mind Lou was the greatest soulful crooner our our time

  • Que voz tan acariciante y su acompañamiento es espectacular. Felicitaciones por este video

  • So gorgeous. Lou Rawls has the most beautiful, velvety voice. Is that George Benson on guitar?

  • No. It's Herb Ellis.

  • @FrankeyHoboken Wrong, this is Lou Rawls singing.

  • Very, very good!!!

  • Love Lou Rawls rendition. Thanks for sharing.

  • Incredible! Thank you. The best version of the song, the perfect one! Thank you, Lou, you are now somewhere in the Sky, God Bless you, thank you, fiend!

  • @eckero63 i can't decided which i like better, lou's or tony's...so, i have them both on my mp3 player! :-)

  • Oh how I long to have been able to go to a cabaret on a starry night and have a drink while listening to Lou Rawls sing song after song after song. His voice has such a warm and charming texture to it! Thanks for sharing!
