  • It was a cruel crash. A high side that cost him everything.

Schwantz hated winning the championship that way

  • Sorry I'm way too young to know this great rider. I was 9 at the time, he was paralyzed.....gp is dangerous, still wish I was in it tho

  • Who´s the guy with the Nr.7 ?

  • @SennaRossiFan46 Luca Cadalora

  • We will get you on a bike again Wayne! I am working to bring The Bike Experience to the USA for many wheelchair users suffering a spinal cord injury. You can still ride!!!

  • Once a champion,Still a champion, in the hearts and minds of many, moto gp's never been the same

  • wanted more to battle with Rainey and Schwantz.

    Their battle is art.

  • great rider..... miss those days...... I genuinely thought he crashed at Laguna. All these years since then, I thought it was at Laguna Seca.......

  • This crash, and Schwantz's subsequent retirement as a result of this crash are what made Mick Doohan's career.

  • @MetricHotrodsdotcom Thank You

  • Wayne was my friend, back in the school days. I haven't seen him since 1977 and then read about this awhile ago. Keep up your smile and attitude, Wayne.

  • Chilling words @ 0:23

  • a great champion!!!

  • i uploaded vid where wayne rainey and schwantz are talking about this crash with a tv footage of it. from "faster" documentary

    /watch?v=JcdR9Z50RIc

  • well at least the ciggarette bike got wrecked

  • Wayne you are a champion. Still in the padock today, maybe not riding but a massive resource for other riders! Power to you!

  • isso ae parece uma mobilete..

  • yeah Schwantz went on to claim the championship but you could tell he wished it would have been with Rainey still challenging him for it, No Dis to Schwantz just felt for him and Rainey and everyone in the the circus

  • ...che sfortuna...

Wayne è stato un grande pilota.

  • I remember being at Laguna after this incident. it was pure shock! Sure, I was a Schwantz fan all those years, but I would rather have seen Rainey getting beat by him then down and out like that.

Also living around Monterey at the time, I bumped into him on a couple of different occasions at the Yamaha shop in Seaside. He was always nice and polite. Rainey was awesome and this was a sad time.

  • Such a damned shame.. Rainey was a God on a bike!

  • He was a great friend, to me, from grade school all the way through high school. Then I move away. I am so glad he is still alive.

  • i wonder if modern protective gears would prevent him from suffering this horrible injury?

  • @mistyken : No it was track design. I wish it would never happen agian. Then dear Marco died.

  • @mistyken yes they would, since at that time no one was using a protection for the spine, incredibly. Ironically, now they are for sell for max 80-100 dollars in every motorbike equipement store (I have one too and I use it all the time).

  • Any one, finishing first or last in a GP with the Bi-polar Monster 500cc strokers is a man worth watching. But the guys who dominated deserve the upmost respect. I will never be anywhere near schwantz level, even though I didnt care for him when he was racing, he is still amazing.

  • damn.... looks like he was really unlucky, doesnt look like a really hard crash...

  • @36psi Alright, I'm sorry, I mistook the incident and thought it was more serious then it appeared. But hold onto your flame wars now. Using a serious mental illness such as Dyslexia as an insult, thats low dude, I ask of you, if you are so well educated yourself, then why don't you formulate a proper rebuttal instead of slandering someone who has serious concern for a fellow human being.

  • @36psi Trolling a video in which, as you say, a legend died. You must really sleep well at night huh? Show this man respect and hush your mouth.

  • @36psi You sir are a fucking douchebag.

  • this crash is the reason doohan won as many as he did.

  • Anybody know who was Rainey's main rival was around this time. I watched a documentary here in the UK on motorcycle GP racing about a year ago, and it mentioned that although his rival lived to compete against Rainey, he felt terrible sad when Rainey had to retire; both for reasons of Rainey being injured, but also he had to admit, some of the fight had gone out of him as a result of Rainey retiring.

  • @bebopdelux10 Raineys main rival at this time was Schwantz, although Doohan and Gardner would have been in that list too

  • @Cancerape

Thank you very much. In the old clips prior to Rainey's crash he was a (still is) a very good looking, blond haired, ladies man. I felt sad seeing him after that clip in the paddock in a wheelchair. Please do not feel I am down on disability, it's just that when you've been a world champion in a glamorous sport like GP motorcycle racing, to be paralysed and lose that aspect of your life takes guts to come back like he has done. Once again, many thanks.

  • i remember this as well but what you guys dont know, this man kept on truckin, a true champion, he didnt let off, he couldnt walk no more, so he got into carts and ran a gp team, we all still love you wayne

  • I would hope for some miracle surgery to allow him the freedom again.

    he's still the champion

  • @popoahi99 He is not one of the greatest.... he is just the GREATEST !!!

  • The king of his time!

  • Comment removed

  • Rainy son. Love your style. Legend. Always.

  • May GOD bless him with some miracle..all the best to W/R ....

  • Terrible. Just terrible.

    Thanks for uploading this.

  • i remember the day this happened, i sat staring at my huge rainey poster (from performance bikes) hoping for the best, but deep down i knew it was serious :/ what a sad sad day :(

  • it was the curbs, he slide over it on his back, wrong designed curbs as "@phailandaids" explain earlier.

Wayne works with Yamaha and Jorge Lorenzo now

  • So everyone who may not know, it was the sand runoff that caused his injury. The setup was for F1 cars the sand was set up to stop GP cars but was unsafe for moto gp riders.

  • Barry sheene was the reason i slung my leg over a bike as a kid but Wayne rainey was the greatest

  • A sad loss to racing

  • Wayne is just outside my house! He is visiting his parents and is getting ready to leave. I live right next to his parents.

  • sad ...

  • I live right next to Wayne Rainey's dad. I've seen him before!

  • was a shame...but he was carrying injuries from a previous race...dont think he was fully race fit when this sad crash happened....

  • Talented then and just as talented now, an honour to have watched him race.

  • That's hard to watch.

  • Damn this clip is hard to watch him paralysed in the gravel. Imagine all of a sudden not being able to move. Damn that's scary.

  • For the record... Wayne's broken back happened because the Italian circuit had a low kerb running around the outside of the track and he slid over it. Purely a freak accident but unfortunately, and in my mind criminally, it robbed everyone of quite possibly he greatest battle 500 GPs never saw: that being a dominant Wayne Rainey against a certain Mr M.Doohan. Schwantz, to this day, is still not impressed with the way he won the championship that year. Wayne being paralysed was tragic!! Thanks.

  • Il massimo rispetto per questo grande campione che per il suo lavoro è rimasto su una sedia a rotelle.

    Ciao Wayne

  • i have 27 year old,,for me after de wayne velentino rossy is the #1 ever

  • sad loss to the gp's was that....i seem to remember steve parish saying it was just a simple low side he had but it was the gravel trap he got caught up in wich paralysed him...once shwantz retired the next season doohan had know one to race hence 5 straight titles

  • In fact i'll make it my mission to track "pandadelight" down. Watch this space...

I notice pandadelight has posted this quip several times. We'll how brave he/she is when their isp, ip address, account details re isp and therefore address is published. Sleep well you piece of fuckin shit.

  • Pandadelight you are complete and utter scum, a pathetic lowlife that deserves to suffer for the rest of your miserable life. I'd pay a years wage to punch your head in. What a wanker!!

Wayne Rainey bless you for courage, strength and skills as a motorcyle rider. One of the best.

  • bad news such a shame Rainey not just a great racer but a great person also !!!!

  • Truly a bad day for all, god bless Wayne.

  • wasn't this the reason they go the other way round in Misano now? because they now ride 'the wrong way' compared to the past

  • :( makes me so sad ...everytime i watch it

  • @SlaveToTheDark great racer ever,

  • What the fuck happens to Misano Circuit???? Wayne in 1993, Shoya in 2010... In fact, what happens to italian circuits?? Imola 1994, Senna and Ratzenberger... So sad

  • >Wayne Rainey Gratest Champion / safe track, no sind winds

  • >Wayne Rainey Gratest Champion / light

  • Where did he lost it?

  • Is there any outside footage of the crash? I only found on board camera images, never a circuit or TV camera. On the on board camera, it's impossible to see what really happened to him.

  • @rparello from the camera it looks like the bike was about to highside and Rainey over-compensated and it then low-sided.....Nobody will ever know if it was the bike hitting him that broke his back or if it was when he slammed into the raked gravel surface designed to slow down cars that span off the track

  • @phailandaids he broke his back when he hit the gravel.the bike did not hit him.it's all in the movie called "faster" i think.take care

  • @phailandaids spectators stated that he unfortunately landed on the curb with his back. one meter earlier (plain tarmac) or one meter further (gravel bed) might have saved his spine. Elevated curbs are one of the points where the safety requirements for car races and for motorbike races do not go hand in hand.

  • @phailandaids what happened was it did go for the highside. but he didnt over compensate. the tire was spinning then stuck while he was leaned in which threw him over the handle bars

  • @phailandaids I Personally think he broke his back for the high curbstones, when you hit them with such a speed, and you highside on a curbstone as high as those were back in the days, you have a really big chance to break your back, and when you unfortunate like rainey, you will get paralised alltough he had protection on.

  • @phailandaids

There is another video on youtube where it shows the crash from a distance. From what you can make out it just looks like he started tumbling a little after he hit the curbing and continued into the gravel, the bike does not look like its anywhere near him .

  • @phailandaids Rainey himself said that it was the curbs buried in the gravel (to slow down cars) that broke his back. They removed those and redesigned the gravel traps, one crash too late as it were. One of the saddest days in motorsports.

  • @phailandaids I believe that Rainy told that he hit the curb-stones, and that was the main reason why he became paralized.

  • @rparello no there wasn't i actually have the race in it's entirety .that was the only angele that i had ever seen and i watched it live.he was truly a mjor player in the gp's i miss the ol 500's that was some intense racing.........

  • @rparello Watch this one at 2:10 it shows a bit more /watch?v=1sxhSLPBD5A

  • @FFanatic1 Thanks for the link it looks like the last flip he did was the 1 that bent his head

  • @rparello There are photos of the crash in a book. His head got planted into the gravel (which was wavy in those days) and the bike smacked him in the end.

Rainey said that he was trying to get up quickly and got flipped around like a ragdoll. So he advised riders not to do so. After this crash, sandtraps at all circuits were made flat.

He's still my hero. What happened was really unfortunate. There have been many other worse-looking crashed but they didn't end up this bad.

  • @rparello

Here is an outside view of the crash in this vid:

Personally to me it looks like he just got in a body roll and hurt himself, doesnt look like the bike was even close to him.

  • @rparello I dont think so. I subscribe to MOTOGP.COM. Even the actual race footage doesnt show much more than what you've seen here.

  • @rparello I remember watching it live on t.v. He slid off over the curbing on the corner. It looked like a harmless slide.

  • @rparello No I don't think there are movies of the crash, however he said that he had a lowside and hitting the curb with his back as he slid. At the time, mind you if you see it also in the video, the curbs were higher than now and the protections of the suit are much lower. This has caused the breaking of the spine.

  • @rparello In v=1sxhSLPBD5A you can see outside footage, although its quality doesn't allow to see a clear image of what really happened...

  • @rparello I found a serie of pictures which shows how the disaster came. The worst thing was the way he felt on the sand, breaking his neck.

  • To see the picture, go here: i51.tinypic.com29mk66a

You only have to put ".jpg" at the end of the web direction.

  • such a silly crash 999 times out of a 1000 you just walk away , very sad for wayne not to race again , watched it live , who would think this would end his riding career. still carnt belive such a crash could have ended so bad.

  • Pandadelight, Rainey was the ultimate racer, the best hands down you tard! I watched him and Lawson fight it out for years on machines your pansy ass couldnt break out of 1st gear upon. No modern throttle jockey even comes close to him!

  • I was on a 5 day training course to get my bike licence. We were sitting with a couple of the instructors watching this race.

had my test the next day (passed)

But will never forget that day.

The battles between Rainey and Schwantz are legendary.

Bit like Rossi vs Stoner at Laguna Seca (2009) ....... But maybe a bit grittier.

  • he never raced motorcycles after this crash in italy............................and now he is involved in road racing karts, with his best friend eddie lawson......his ps3 and diaper change ..you would not amount to a drop of sweat from this mans balls ,you are truly a piece of shit... he has won world titles, the closet you'll EVER get to that ,would be sitting in your diaper and playing your ps3...a moto champion 2009 ......google you fuckin troll google

  • @Butcher94536 dont feed the troll.

  • @PandaDelight

So unnecessary. Rainey was a good lad and a fine racer. You only belittle yourself with this horrible and wicked remark.

  • What a nasty and unecessary remark. Rainey is a good lad and was a great racer. You only belittle yourself with this dreadful statement.

  • @PandaDelight

What kind of a retard are you? What has PS3 got to do with Wayne Rainey. Crawl back under the rock you came out of.

  • @PandaDelight ....you are such a weak cunt, hope you die a slow painful cancer related death.........
