I don't agree entirely, Loki. I can inflect, for example, all ~60 forms of a Portuguese word by heart, after studying them and finding the patterns. I can read and write all of the Japanese kana characters. That doesn't mean I know what all words mean when I read them, no, but that doesn't mean it's worthless. Already knowing the inflections, I can easily pick the one I need when I find myself in a conversation. I know how to spell new words when I learn them. It helps! Just learn words too!
@Skomakarn I always said there are a lot of ways you can choose to learn a language. I personnaly never cram grammar at the beginning (except for Arabic which an exception due to its complexity) I just try to chill out and absorb without grammar =) Grammar really helps me after maybe 1 year of intense study
I think the problem with school lessons is they act language learning like other subjects. Topics are boring and system of grade is not effective. I don't know like in Belgian or any other country but in Poland we have something like "short test", and we have to learn some like 50 vocabulary and try to translate on test and that ridiculous, most of those vocabulary average student never hear and while after this test students forget most vocabulary. @TheLmfaoMovement korean simply put videos on you tube are extremely helpful with sentence structure. So far they are the best korean grammer videos i have found. Hope this helps.
I'd like to learn Tagalog because my girlfriend come from Philippines, I'm Italian and I've already started to learn it buying a book "Headstart for the Philippines" but I found it's a language very different from the Italian,it's too hard for me and I'm a bit demoralized. I'm gonna try again following your method but I think it will be the same very difficult, the words in Tagalog seem each other very similar for me:(.
I admire u, ur very good in languages, continua così!:)
Couldn't agree more! I learned to understand basic russian by "not learning", well.. without any effort because it's common to hear russian at my place from various sources. I didn't take it at school and I put about 1% effort in "learning" it. It just came to me really slowly over my lifetime. And last week I kickstarted the cyrillic alphabet (knew partially some time before) and Now I can read in it at a satisfying pace. (still slow but it's not driving my insane, lol)
I'd rather read a child's storybook in French than my textbook. The story is pointless. It's about two parents that get younger....really? You would think Canada would do a better job of teaching French
I'm half and half on the grammar. But I learned French at school, but then I got so interested in French that I spent a lot of time listening to podcasts and stuff like that. I've never learned from books like you have, but then again I got to speak French for a month in Senegal, so, I guess I'm very different. But I don't feel that I've learned the language through reading. But I see your point of listening reading then grammar, but I combined all three at the same time, now I'm conversant :-)
How long do you think one would need to spend only readding texts and stuff before they are able to communicate?? I can speak in French but I learned it in school. Plus I lived there for a year, but I had a pretty good idea of French before I went there.
@p90xNick Well it depends on many factors: which language, how many efforts you invest everyday, do you live in the country?
Like easy language should be between 6 months to 1 year (for me it was italian I made it in 4 months, but I still have to get better), hard language: like japanese I almost studied it 2 years and still have to read more to be completely fluent. My big problem is that I don't have the opportunity to speak it often...
Hi Loki, I live in the US and I have taken three years of French in high school. I am taking AP French for my senior year online. Great video Loki! I was actually struggling earlier with Korean grammar. I am getting into more complex sentences and as I do it gets harder for me to correctly put together sentences. Though I have memorized how to use the topic/subject/location particles; it can get confusing at time. French grammar confuses me too. Despite studying the language for two years, most in school, my grammar skills are so-so :( but I figure they'll get better in time.
hi loki, .... I seemed to hear you said "answer" with sound "w" like it would be "ansoo-er" and then you correct with answer said "anser".

I don't know why you have to stick to one form of learning. I think learning new languages are awesome, but there are many ways to learn new languages, and I think that listening is very important, but so is grammar. As for Spanish, I speak Portuguese as my native tongue. All I needed when I took Spanish in high school was one week to look at the words, know the rules of pronunciation, and I can speak Spanish, communicate with a native speaker, easily. But languages that are completely different
@ianpolitano07 need a different approach. Sure you can learn how to say phrases in a language, and communicate by knowing that if you say this, there will be this effect. But if you learn grammar, I find that constructing your own sentences once you learn the rules, it will be easier to speak, given that you also at the same time listen and speak on a daily basis. If I go into a foreign country and just learn by osmosis, I'll pick up the language, but not as well as if I study it's grammar.
@ianpolitano07 Well everyone is different and has his own method. I follow Steve Kauffman's method: time invested in grammar maybe :1%
Because I start noticing and I understand the grammar by reading: I know tara is conditional, kimi ha is for informal male speech etc but I never read a grammar book !
I completely agree with you, I've never studied English in a school before, then I came to Australia, made the school test and to them my listening, speaking and writing are advanced but my grammar not, and without study any grammar I can communicate better that people that have spent years learning english in school. My teacher think it is funny when I see something wrong in english and my conclusion is that "it doesn't sound right" instead of think about the grammar rule involved in it.
@loki2504 If goes through your mind to learn portuguese one day, It will be a pleasure to help you, I've tried to learnt another languages before, like japanese, russian, german but now I want to try these languages and a few more, you, Moises and Steve gave me back the motivation that I needed to tackle all these languages again, and here in Australia is the perfect place for it because in Sydney you can find people from all over the world for practice. Thanks
@ricfs I'll eventually learn it but after a while because I'm in my asian and semetic period xD I'll consider learning it when I go back to European languages ! But it will be VERY easy to cover the basics because it's like 90% the same as in spanish and that's great !
@loki2504 Yes it will be really easy for you, I'm thinking about to learn Spanish, Italian and French using the triangulation method based on the fact that all these languages together with Portuguese have the same latin root and share between each other a lot of words, with your experience do you think it's a good idea and that it's possible?
@ricfs Sure that's possible !!! Those languages are so similar !!! Very easy ! just the grammar is a little bit complex. I would say the most difficult romance language would be french because of its grammars, its exceptions and its written form (completely illogical)
Very interesting thoughts about Language Learning Loki, I also agree that YouTube is very good listening tool as input because people listen with no purpose of study, and yet they learn prnounciation/vocabulary...etc
@loki2504 Great! I've started meeting with my friend once a week for conversation practice and such. It seems that Korean becomes exponentially complex as one learns. It's so challenging, but still my favorite so far :)
I find naturally learning the grammar better than how we learned grammar in 3rd grade, drills at the beginning are not as effective as drills later on, which, depending on the language, may be useful. Say you're learning Russian, if you're having trouble naturally learning the more complex grammar structures, you may wish to drill yourself for a few days. But really, you should only do this if you are motivated enough to practice grammar.
@loki2504 I didn't say the beginning, but you may wish to drill yourself more TOWARD the beginning for languages like Russian or Japanese with more complex grammar systems. It is all personal preference though.
@AkaoKiyotsu Everyone is different. I personnaly never do drills for japanese because it's not useful to me, I'll eventually find out by reading and noticing
Y tu? Que quieres intentar?

I completely agree with how your teacher learned Latin. I also try to read texts that are interesting to me and naturally the information is retained significantly longer rather effortlessly. Im happy with language learning now :)
Loki, I can't explain the rules for these corrections. I don't consciously know the rules of English although it is my native language. I can just hear the small word choices you make violating a sense of rightness in my 'language monitor'. Please let me know if these corrections are too many for you
@boabysands123 Keep correcting me ! I like it ! Thanks ! I cannot explain to you french grammar xD I can use it but I cannot explain it xD I'm not a linguist ! I believe any native speaker don't really know the grammar !
@loki2504 I cannot explain you both how the German grammar works. I mean, I learned it in 5th and 6th grade, but it's long gone. I mean, I could tell you how you have to do it that everything sounds fine, that's not the point. But it would be completely impossible to me to write a grammar book or so. That's natural!
But: If you learn a new language, you'll get better in your own as well. I can't tell you why exactly, but it's a fact...
Exactly. Natural is the "right way". For our native language, we could only hear it. As we grew we were able to speak it, then we go to school and know how to use it better.
Thank you for the new video! Always amazing to listen your thoughts. I don't think you should be worried about yur english, if you stay here on youtube you will always improve more!
@danifortravel My English is getting better and better and better since I watcch English videos here on YouTube. Really: It's like magical, but if you use it every day, it become more "native" every day. Since I write a dozen Englich comments every day my vocabulary increases every day. I still need the dictionary sometimes, but compared to one year ago... Wow!
I started learning English in 5th grade, nine years ago. I can tell you, I wasn't able to speak this language until... probably two years ago. As you said: The problem is that they clobber you with the grammar book. I know that this is totally in vain! I study Spanish for three years now in school and I'm not able to intruduce myself. That's a really big problem.
But the problem is that it's nearly impossible to evaluate or mark the sutdents the other way around. That's a problem for schools.
@loki2504 You seem to have the same ideas like me. But I apprehend that there are some influential politicians who thinks that it won't work without marks.
I think, the path of least resistance would be to show an alternative and to prove that it works faster and better.
But the big question is: What is the target of the scholastic language learing. I oftenly get the feeling that it's all about degrading the students and NOT to teach them a foreign language on a serious way.
@AndreR241 But does it work with marks (right now) ??? I never saw someone fluent after having some classes in the target language, because it's impossible ! The most important part is the self study part !
What is the target of schoolish language teaching? Well the target is easy: waste your time...
So how did you manadge to learn english on your own? By watching movies I guess ! We should immerse the students and not cramming grammar because it's not working...
@loki2504 So EPIC!!! You're totally right! I think, at least the first seven of the nine years I study English now at school were wasted time. It was all about grammar. They changed the final tests a year ago so you have to write texts now (what a miracle) instead of exercises like "Rewrite these sentences in the past progressive". But yeah, they're teaching English from first grade on nowadays. This means, they're still teaching grammar from grade 1 to 11... As you said: What a waste of time!
@loki2504 Oh btw: Yes, I improoved my English by watching videos like yours. Most of what you can read here is the result of the last two years of self-studying. The time before I studied in school and I got more and more depressed because I wasn't able to speak a word in English. Then I began watching videos here on YouTube, reading blogs in English, watching English TV and so on.
True. They teach languages as if they were Mathematics in university. But I think it is now changing with the introduction of new interactive methods that focus on conversation skills, the same communicative method used in institutes like Instituto Cervantes. This is why I decided to not continue with university Spanish. Instead I worked part-time in a call center and conversed with native speakers on a daily basis. That way I think I improved a lot, and earned money too! =)
@loki2504 I'm currently learning Japanese and when I get better, if you want maybe we can chat in it if you want?

I'm learning Korean. I have been for quite some time..
I have the alphabet memorized. I'm fairly good at pronunciation.
I know a satisfying amount of words, along with a couple handfuls of sentences,
but I cannot understand Korean sentence structure.
I mean, I do understand it, but I just.. can't create my own sentences.
It's impossible for me. It's quite irritating.
Do you think you can recommend a good website that would help me out?

Exactly. Natural is the "right way". For our native language, we could only hear it. As we grew we were able to speak it, then we go to school and know how to use it better.

@AndreR241 Maybe we shouldn't mark the students ... but motivate them to be independant !

AndreR241 1 year ago

@ihcahieh That's great ! Grammar will never help if you don't have a good foundation of the language before tackling it !
