If you ever need a demonstration of why I say Bjorling was the greatest tenor who ever lived, this is it. I discount Caruso due to the poor recording technology of his his time. Not only was Bjorling pitch-perfect, but his musicality was beyond reproach. His phrasing and mastery of the Italian language were both superb. I am sure there are not many Italian tenors today who would deny being influenced by him, By the way, the recording was made in 1959 - he died at home in Sweden in January 1960.
The perfect "linea di canto"of Jussi Bjorling and the great " torrente di suono ed espressività" di Franco Corelli make them the two best (by no doubt) tenors of last century
None shall sleep! None shall sleep! Even you, O Princess, in your cold bedroom, watch the stars, that tremble with love and with hope! But my secret is hidden within me; none will know my name! No, no! On your mouth I will say it when the light shines! And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine! No one will know his name..and we will have to, alas, die, die! Calaf, now certain of victory, sings: Vanish, o night! Set, stars! Set, stars! At dawn, I will win! I will win I will win!
Yes, Jussi is probably the best that has ever sung this aria. His technique, tone, radiance just take your breath away. Pavarotti, during his era, was in a class of his own. But Jussi is unsurpassed.
comparing artists does serve a purpose i watched paul potts led me to Lanza now to Bjorling surely the only thing that matters is that it is there to be heard . Sometimes the audience has to do their share
I heard him in 1958 sing the duke in my home town, Chicago he was great-- a voice that carried even without being huge and was well placed and beautiful. He sang very well till the end at 49 yrs.
Comparing artistry is unfair to the art. Each artist brings a different sensibility and physicality to the finished piece.
Jussi however was blessed with an instrument, technique and ability to express emotion which has yet to be surpassed.
Lanza brings emotion but lacks the finesse and control. Pav is great and Domingo rarely puts a foot wrong. Love Corelli but del Monaco is not my cuppa tea.
Only Jussi sings the final B every so slightly sharp adding frisson and a spine tingle.
This is my favorite recording of Nessum Dorma, fro the complete opera recording. I saw Nillson with De Stefano at the Lyric in Chicago singing Turandot in 1961 or '62. De Stefano was way past his prime and the voice was no match for Nillson in the last act. I saw Bjorling in his last concert in Chicago (1959) at Orchestra Hall. He did six encores for us, and they finally turned off all the lights!
It was of course Bjorling that gave Nessun dorma to the World for every other tenor to compete with. The bench mark was set. As usual, the first is always the best.
One shouldn't make comparisons. Its all subjective but Jussi was a God. Along with those other great Swedish singers Nilsson and Gedda ( ok part Russian).
He's not actually the first to perform it. The first performer of Puccini's Nessun Dorma was Miguel Fleta in 1926 (34 years befre this recording).
Jussi Björling is quite good, but my favorites will always be Pavarotti (his 1980 performance) and Paul Potts for this (until I hear someone who can sing it with the emotion and delivery that they do); however, we are all entitled to our own opinions.
Kain, You are correct of course. But Bjorling made it the popular aria that it is today.
Pavarotti made the aria his own of course. I guess it's a little silly to make comparisons.
They all sound fabulous. Its one of those great timeless pieces that as long as all love passion and emotion are put into it; then it will bring out in the listener exactly those emotions also. Take good care
@KainTheDragoon ROFL. "Jussi Björling is quite good" - possibly the most powerful and technically sound tenor of all time... and then you add Paul Potts - an amateur - and suggest that he's better?
Comparing Luciano Pavarotti and Jussi Björling is like comparing a god descended into flesh to a mortal precociously ascended into the celestial spheres. It's a question of essence...
Jussi Bjorling died September 1960.

It's is simply incredible to hear noise refined into a symphony of splender. It is hard not to become emotional when listening to perfection.

Why are their comparisons with Paul Potts' name involved? He is ok at best, and I doubt he will ever be as good as any of the real singers.
mackinskor71 3 years ago
ceb 2633. Yes your so right. Paul is no where near the top tenors but his story and humility cant help but touch the soul.
Give him a few more years. I doubt whether he will ever reach the opera stage.
Too many aspiring to the dizzy heights of entertainment mediocrity already.
Take care. The Baldchemist

you atre absolutely right paul cant be near of the top, he is very far for any really operistic artist, and bjorlin is god in this topic.
