The americans didnt blow it up a 5" shell hit the emplacement from the hms ajax as they were loading a 155mm shell into the breach causing the gun to explode and also the ammuntion which threw chunk of of concrete about. From stephen e ambrose's novel D-Day
Great. I also heard somewhere that French farmers present day have utilised the old V1 launching site for storage purposes if you can believe that?! Thanks for the advice, and I know where to come in the future.
@EggheadOfTheFuture Check out my World War II playlist I have been to a few of these as well. If you want to find their location, do a Google search on 'v1 sites France'. And search 'atlantic wall belgium boulogne': the first site looks good.
Just want to say how big a fan I am of your work covering the Normandy beaches. Within the next 12 months I hope to visit myself, after reading many books on D-day and watching countless archives. How long do you recommend attending, and when is the best time of year in your opinion? Thanks.
@EggheadOfTheFuture Thks. I spent 6 days in Normandy filming the locations seen in the channel. I didn't look in the towns too much (Bayeux, Caen St Lo, Carentan etc) or go to the museums in great depth. I concentrated on the beaches and main sites of D-Day itself (not Battle of Normandy). I travelled using my own car (essential I think), based in a B&B in Bayeux. If you want more info I could PM you. Just say.
@EggheadOfTheFuture Not really. Having said that, there are loads of underground bunkers, gun emplacements and odd concrete structures (odd in that they seem randomly located) all over the beach areas. If you intend to go, I highly recommend the Holts Guide to Normandy (plus essential map). Buy this well in advance and really study it for what interests you most. Some towns have incorporated beach structures into memorials, shops etc & farmers have even used them for storage. Get the Holts.
@Svan0s84 The only info I have, and this was from a brief Google search states: the site had four "20 tonne ex-Czechoslovakian naval guns of circa 1911 manufacture were each housed in a reinforced 2500 tonne concrete casemate and could easily concentrate fire onto Omaha and Gold Beaches. Each gun could fire a 100lb shell distance of nearly 13 miles at a maximum rate of six rounds per minute." Hope that helps.
What are you writing in your description VideoHistoryToday is rubbish. It was not placed idealy to attack the allied landing forces because it was made for defense.
Get that point right...The attackers were the allies this time....for a change (-;
Difficult to know what to say. Either I should take on board your 'The biggest mistake you can make is taking everything I write too seriously....' comment or I should be really pedantic about defending my description? Lets be pedantic: if I had said they guns were 'attacking' the 'beaches', then you would be right but I said they were 'attacking' the 'allied forces'. Saying they were 'defending' the 'Allied forces' makes no sense. Its all a matter of who/what was attacking what/whom.
Well, if you are into history you should be more pedantic. In that case things are quite clear: The purpose oth the Atlanic wall was obviously of ´defensive´ nature against a possible ´attack´ of the Allied forces. Guess it is quite clear who were the attackers and who the defenders. It makes your description appearing a bit unprofessional. But hey...it is the reputation of your work....I am fine with all the morons who have no clue what they are talking about.
There is nothing unprofessional about what I said. It is an accurate description. I do not really want to get into a dicussion about correct English grammar when I suspect your first language is German and I cannot put two German words together to save my life. But referring to me as a moron when unfortunately you do not understand what I am saying is both insulting and disrespectful. If you have nothing constructive to say, don't bother commenting.
Yep...might be my English then...the moron by the way refers to a lot people leaving a lot of inaccurate rubbish. In this case I just wanted to point out what should be obvious...But as you said before "Its all a matter of who/what was attacking what/whom". However...no harm meant...I apologize for the moron because you are right. It is disrespectful and I appreciate your straight approach to make that clear.
I think you are talking about the viewing hole/gun position looking out of the rear of the casement. This feature was pretty standard on all the German underground bunkers, obviously as a means of defendeding the only viable entrance to the casements/bunkers.
There are examples in my collection showing where grenades and other explosives have been thrown or fired (bazookas) at the entrance and barely damaged the concrete.
or should i say a 6" shell from ajax
