so lets say im improvising... there's chord of Gmaj7 for 8 measures, as long as i ONLY play the notes in that chord, im fine, it should sound good? do i HAVE to start on the root note of G as well? I'm confused :(
@i0nPuNk182 you could play all chord tones at first and you'd be fine. but to spice things up you target chord tones on strong beats (which are 1 & 3 in 4/4 time) and add other non-chord tones to approach each chord tone. This is challenging so you could just learn some cool riffs that sound good over Gmaj7 or whatever chord.
@wkriski oh i see what you mean, thanks! im also trying to practice on switching chords like from Gmaj7 to F7, it's challenging for me but i think ill get it... thanks again!
@deceased94 if you know the chords in each key and common chord progressions you will know if they are in the same key. So write out the chords in each key like in key of C major you have C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, Bdim, C. So if you see C F G chord progression you'd recognize it from key of C.
good question! the 3rd determines the quality of the chord, whether it is major or minor (ie if it's a major or minor 3rd interval).
also when you play the root you get the 5th as a partial overtone, so it's already in the root note in a sense - this is an explanation requiring some knowledge of physics, etc. :)
Grab a guitar and play the three notes, the kinds of riffs you can make are generally defined by where you play the third more than the root note and the fifth note. Music is interpreted but I do agree with wriski, in general the third tone is most characteristic.
does anyone know how to turn the balance knob to remove the guitar sound from the mix? bought the book chord tone soloing .... but can't seem to remove the guitar sound.
good for you man and good luck in school. i'm really trying to get income from my coaching program, and various other attempts to make money online to prove that it can be done. sadly the large group of fans I have built up from free lessons aren't willing/able to pay for lessons.
hey dude, ive checked ur website out and read ur bio: Great respect man, I myself will go get a master degree in mechanical engi. Its rare to find a good guitar player who is also an educated person. Great lessons btw, too bad no time to practice much, tryin to keep my 4.16 GPA, got accepted to the top engi colleges :/
P.S: Sucks that really good guitarists have no opportuinity to use their talent to put the food on the table :( .
Respect that you take ur time to make this lessons.
I have just listened to your soloing over and it makes so much sense. I have every course and every book and every one says to learn something different. But still I cannot find the 1 3 5th of a key and desperately need that to carry on. Can you tell me where to get more of what you are talking about. THANK you
I'm sorry there's a lot of confusion out there. As someone who's been playing for 27 years I would hope you would trust what I'm telling you and also see what works for you. Have you picked up 'chord tone soloing' by barrett tagliarino? you can join my program and study with me i explain it at onlineguitarcoaching [dot] com
I'm working on a structured series of courses which take much more effort on my part but I want to make it as close to private lessons as possible (where each student submits video assignments and I provide video feedback to each student), forums, etc
keep up the music!!!!! man nice vids, very nice to watch

how do you know if a chord progression is in the same key?

what makes the 3rd the most characteristic tone? instead of the root or the 5th?

ah ok! That makes sense. And yes, I learned a bit about overtones in a previous music course I took. Thanks!

i'm glad you bought that book. i use winamp, turn on the equalizer and shift the balance to the right to remove guitar.
if you want to check out my coaching program (see right of vid) I dive into more details of chord tone soloing with backing tracks.
