Interesting, the first time I heard the English version. The beginning of the chorus sounds pretty strange, but otherwise I like it this way, too. And the lyrics are as good as the German ones. Too bad Peter Schilling only had this one single hit.
the only way that this video would be way better would be showing the story as it is sung...to me it feels like everything went perfect and while in orbit a giant ominous alien mother ship appeared right above the orbiter, opened the hatch communications started failing as well as the rockets and then it got suck into the alien ship...that is what pictured in my mind anyways
Heard the shiny toy guns is ok. but not as good as this. Peter has a haunting voice and the syth and guitar is better sounding here. Shiny Toys is like a watered down teenie bopper version. but if it brings people here then I guess that is a positive. When I first heard this song it stopped me in my tracks and searched for this song. Had to sing the chorus at the record store cause I didn't know the name ..LOL
This was a homage to David Bowie's Space Oddity song in which an astronaut called Major Tom is drifted to space and lost there. God bless him, he really loved his wife.
The most recent reference was used in Pet Shop Boys' David Bowie remix "Hello Spaceboy"
"Ground to major, bye bye Tom"
Check out that remix. It is awesome as is always with everything from the Pet Shop Boys....
I lived in Florida at the time that the Challenger exploded. I watched on TV until just before the launch, then I went outside. I watched as the shuttle took off and began it's ascent. I could see the light from the shuttle. Then it suddenly flashed brightly and was gone. I stood there thinking "This isn't happening." I ran back inside and the news was replaying the crash over and over. Until 9/11, it was the most dramatic and heart wrenching thing I ever saw.
@Metalchris36 Oh wait. I was wrong I looked it up. However the song reminds me of the Tom Hanks flick. The original Davie bowie version is a fictional character Astronaut that is in space. a metaphor for David Bowie being stung out on drugs. it's like you are in outerspace lost and trying to get clean is him coming home. This song is a spin off and is a literal account of an astronaunt who is in outerspace for rehab but fakes his death and decides space is home.
I was listening to 105.9 radio station in Orlando, FL. on January 28th and I heard a song that I Ioved and that I remembered from the 80's. The station contributed the song to the Challenger disaster. It is a beautiful song and I am glad I rediscovered it. I am an 80's gal and I am a linguist and I've heard both versions, German and English. I believe both have beautiful qualities but I have to say that the rounded vowels of Vollig Losgelost have a natural and beautiful sound.
this song is number 1

I think this song would go great with footage from the movie 'Appollo 13' with Tom Hanks.

Does this song have anything to do with the explosion of the Challenger in 1984?
Metalchris36 3 months ago
@Metalchris36 It's not likely. Peter Schilling's German original of "Major Tom" was released in 1982.
