America is unique and it's great to have pride, but i'd disagree with the "greatest country in the world" business. It's a good place to live, but it is only ignorant to think it is the best. There are many great places and each place has it's own pros and cons and I don't think there is one "greatest country in the world".
@britishcj91 but it's that uniqueness and our pride that make us believe that we are the greatest country and you know their are many who don't live in this country who think so also, that is obvious by all the illegal aliens who move here and try to stay under the "radar" as it were....there may be a few great countries left out there but at this time with all our freedoms and all our beauty, I believe that we are still the greatest and if it were not so, I would attempt to move to another.

One of my (intelligent) friends said that it was bad that we overthrew the Taliban because of the chaos it threw the country into. It was one of the few times in my life where I was literally left speechless. @mackayash The only successful revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa so far are ones where the government hasn't turned the military against it's citizens. That would have undoubtedly happened in Afghanistan, which is (partially) why the U.S. went there. The main reason was that it was a terrorist hot-bed, so an invasion made a lot of sense, especially in the months following 9/11 (Around 80% of Americans supported the war at the beginning).
@PaulLantow These are police states we're talking about. Egypt for example has a police force well fed and well groomed 1.5 million strong...its military is about 500k. Egypt turned its police against the protesters throughout the 18 days but didn't win. Libya for example, his entire military turned on him (Gaddafi) so he has Mercenaries from outside the country fighting for him (payed mercs obviously)...for all intents and purposes his regime is out and done with, but he just loves to kill.

I raised them to love this country and they are willing to fight and die for her. This is the greatest country in the world. I was born in the Midwest and have been living in Greece the last 21 years. I don't think that you can really appreciate what a miracle our country is until you have lived abroad for an extended period of time. I have learned the Greek language, it's culture, and even married a Greek citizen. But the most surprising lesson in the last two decades for me is realizing how deeply I love the country of my birth, a country I took for granted when I left its shores in 1989. Great song. America is unique and it's great to have pride, but i'd disagree with the "greatest country in the world" business. It's a good place to live, but it is only ignorant to think it is the best. There are many great places and each place has it's own pros and cons and I don't think there is one "greatest country in the world".

One of my (intelligent) friends said that it was bad that we overthrew the Taliban because of the chaos it threw the country into. It was one of the few times in my life where I was literally left speechless. @mackayash The only successful revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa so far are ones where the government hasn't turned the military against it's citizens. That would have undoubtedly happened in Afghanistan, which is (partially) why the U.S. went there. The main reason was that it was a terrorist hot-bed, so an invasion made a lot of sense, especially in the months following 9/11 (Around 80% of Americans supported the war at the beginning).

Egypt turned its police against the protesters throughout the 18 days but didn't win. Libya for example, his entire military turned on him (Gaddafi) so he has Mercenaries from outside the country fighting for him (payed mercs obviously)...for all intents and purposes his regime is out and done with, but he just loves to kill.

tbecker, I agree with you. I HAVE raised my kids to respect this great country of ours. 3 of my five kids are serving in the army right now. I raised them to love this country and they are willing to fight and die for her. This is the greatest country in the world. The military service in my family as far back as I could go is to the civil war. GOD BLESS AMERICA

Isn't is sad that there are so many people out there who despise patriotic people. It seems that the 'hip' thing to do is disrespect your country and laugh at people who are patriotic. These are probably the children of the people who spat at the troops coming home from Vietnam. I think it is a great thing that people will stand up and be proud of thier country. I am from Ireland and feel sorry for those Americans who hate their country. They are missing so much.

I saw Muhamad Ali, Bush hugging Obama, and Tuskeegee Airmen. As far as the "American Religion" you mentioned, in 1896 the U.S. Surpeme Court declared the U.S. to be a christian nation. I don't think that has been overturned. Everyone, please thank a vet or active serviceperson. They put themselves in harm's way so that people can gripe about the greatest nation that there is now. I was born in the Midwest and have been living in Greece the last 21 years. I don't think that you can really appreciate what a miracle our country is until you have lived abroad for an extended period of time. I have learned the Greek language, it's culture, and even married a Greek citizen. But the most surprising lesson in the last two decades for me is realizing how deeply I love the country of my birth, a country I took for granted when I left its shores in 1989. Great song.
