Let me tell you all the truth Sesshomarus mom and Inutaishos marrige was ARRANGED. Inutaisho didn't even love the woman shes pretty of course but she has as much affection as a block of ice. Izayoi was kind and loving. If Sesshies mom wasn't so much like a statue and actually showed that she had a heart Izayoi would've never come into the picture!

But whatever, at that time having mistresses was perfectly normal, men married for power, money, security and rarely for love. So I wouldn't say the marriage between Sess' mom and Inutaisho failed. It went as planned, they got a child and I highly doubt Izayoi would have actually become Inutaisho's wife, how much Inutaisho loved her...
