Engish Professor says Arabic may overtake English in the future

GDP was $3/day for every nation on earth including Britain, Norway, Egypt and India up to 1700. In 1700s, Britain had a moral revolution with a belief of individual freedom for all citizens. This lead to an industrial revolution and enormous increase in productivity. It was a belief in individual liberty, not imperialism, that made England rich.

A truly international second language for all would not wax and wane as national languages. Esperanto works great, quickly mastered compared to national languages to whatever degree needed, therefore would be more useful once popularized to more people who probably only have a minimal need to communicate across linguistic barriers. Also useful for those who need it infrequently, since it can be quickly relearned, and useful for busy professionals who have little extra time.

I just don't see Arabic. The number of Arabic speakers are growing but numbers are not the essential thing. Almost every Islamic country is economically backwards where their people are under the control of strict Islamic rule. No freedom, no innovation and no future. Sorry but those are musts. If Islamic countries drastically change then maybe. Chinese no way. Spanish has the most promise but a long way to go. Sorry we're stuck with English for another 50 years.

What I'm saying is that individual freedom is the key for any people to be productive and right now their are regressive forces in Muslim countries. The challenge is for Islamic cultures to figure out how individual freedom and Islam can coexist. How Islam answers this question will mean either stagnation or advancing Muslim people.

@ADIMM0 I am very well aware that Islam translated the great works of the Greeks. The world owes a great debt of gratitude to the Greeks for creating it and Islam for preserving it in the 12th century. One of the great accomplishments of the Greeks was the concept of individual freedom. I have no hostility toward Islam but I stand by my main point: it is individual freedom that is key to any country's future. Islam must resolve it's traditional hostility for freedom to thrive. I am hopeful

However, I will not pretend that freedom exists in today's Islamic world. You can see this yourself with Muslims fighting throughout the middle east. @ADIMM0 any culture can go through a period of Dark Ages. Greece was in one from 1300 BC to 700 BC when all the cultural developments were coming from the Phoenicians in Lebanon. The Islamic Dark Ages started in 1200 AD when a chief Islamic scholar said that mathematics was of the devil and the Islamic Renaiccance of 800 - 1100s AD came to an end. China's dark ages was the Ming Dynasty of 1300s down from the highlights of the Tang Dynasty of the 900s CE.

Interesting how you chose to concentrate on the end of his sentence as he was stringing off languages that stand a chance of growing in the future. Unfortunately as you heard, English as a lingua franca has reached 2 billion speakers and is being used as an intermediate language between countries and so you might say that arabic has only a small chance of ever overtaking the English language. That's not to say that we should get rid of all other languages and cultures, they should be preserved
