  • How's your right hand when you pick on a Ric? Is it uncomfortable because of the bridge? Easy?

  • @gamecubedude03 The Bridge is fine, but the pick up cover is a pain, because you can only pick in a very limited area, and can't change tone by altering slightly up towards the neck - I think that's why so many people take them off.

  • @MrVulch Yeah, when I played one, I played fingerstyle. I wish I had played it with a pick when I had one in my hands, because that's what I primarily play. If I got one, I'd probably remove the pickup cover. It looks nice, but if it hurts my picking playability, maybe it's not worth it's looks. Hehe.

  • Who cares if bass players use picks or not? One is not definitively "better" than the other. Each works for different genres and different sounds. I can't believe that people online still fight over this...

  • epic tone

  • Any pedals?

  • @ymfarhi - Yeah - a cheap zoom bass effects unit for a bit of distortion

  • @MrVulch a amp?

  • @ymfarhi - Trace Elliott 1X15 combo and a 4X10 extension cabinet

  • thanks for this solo man, first time I see on youtube a dude "playing bass" as it must be and not doing the fuckin wanker slapping poppin`n`pickin homoxesual...

  • mapleglo here fucking love my rick.

  • I love Fender Jazz basses, and I really love Gibson EB-3's and Guild Starfires...but this takes the cake, only way to get better is if you own an Alembic or a custom made bass

  • TAB???? i gotta learn to play this.

  • my bassist is gettin one sunday in some blue fade. subscribe for a high quality video!!

  • I have a Fireglo 4003.

  • Find Devils Creek on facebook aand myspace!

  • I have a Rickenbacker 4001...it is rather sexy!!!

  • Trace Elliot sucks !

  • sounds a bit like bruce foxtons punchy sound

  • yeah!!!nice!!!!

  • Nice little jam Cornish; it really rolls.

  • This sound of Rick, is amazing!

  • shitty bassists shouldnt be allowed to own a bass that nice

  • @mikethebassist321 Don't see any videos of you playing bass Mike - lets see what ya got!

  • im a drummer and i want this bass

  • If you play with a soft nylon pick, it give you greater flexibility of tone as well as all the advantages on single string stuff.

  • Pick Vs Fingers, Its a DIFFERENT kind of "speed". Pick is faster on the same string at a regular rhythm, fingers faster across multiple strings IMO. People need to stop preaching and just play what sounds good.

  • @jedw for me its the other way around ;) quite funny. I love the feeling of freedom that i have with a pick and the feeling of controll that i feel with my fingers. People that hate picks are lame. They are such a great thing for bass playing.

  • don't be a prick! Don't use a pick! :))

  • @Nikolja5 ... unless it gives you the tone/speed/comfort that you need/want.

  • @gitghetto - absolutely right!

  • @gitghetto well, all that you can acomplish with a tuning your bass/amplifier

Just some names: Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, Stenly Clark, Marcus Miller, Steven Bailey, Steve Harris, Cliff Burton, Alex Webster, Steve DiGiorgio, Stu Hamm, Billy Sheehan, Geddy Lee....

And how you can be faster with a pick against 5 fingers? You just need 5 fingers to hold a pick! :)

    Greetings from Serbia!!

  • @Nikolja5 i really have no idea why you're bothering to list of people who play with their fingers. i could list off people who play with a pick, and i wouldn't help my point.

you can get a similar tone, but you can't get the same tone. and that works both ways.

and it's called alternate picking. it's far faster than fingers.

  • Goddammit, i would give all my Christmas presents for that bass

  • I would give both my nuts for that bass!!

  • my bassist has got a beautiful ric with the old horseshoe pickups, it sounds fantastic with some good rockin tunes, you should check it out, just put this 3jmQ9gHZ8aE after the v= in the url.

    also, feedback please!

  • The Ric sounds great of course, but I think the guy's amp setup is great too, he has great midrange clank and brightness without it sounding buzzy. He probably changes his strings more often than I do. I have a 4003S Fireglo, somehow I managed to keep my left nut as well...

  • what song are you playing??

  • Sexy bass :o

  • Sweet.

  • are there any basses that sound like this but alottttt cheaper if u get me

  • Now that's how to play bass -- hard and with a pick.

  • What riff is that song from?

Is it an original of yours? It sounds brilliant.

I've been listening to it over and over again

  • Looks like the dislike button is the size of the dicks of the people who pushed the button. Nice Video man, keep it coming.

  • FUCK I WANT ONE SO FUCKING BAD IN FIREGLO FOR A GOOD PRICE

  • OH MY GOD!!! I want this bass so frakkin bad.............and its black AHHHHHH orgasmic!!!!!!!!

  • How much does that bass retail for?

  • @HeyItsCoop it depends on the year. the vintage ones go for around $3000, and the new ones go for about $2000.

  • @HeyItsCoop more than it cost to make you no joke i got one 22 years ago for 2000

  • @HeyItsCoop way too much, about $1900

  • pick bassist :(

  • @drewsky80

    Pick Bassist :)

  • @drewsky80 Pick bassist :D

  • Cool....We wrote and recorded this very song in 1985! Take a listen and see our drummer rehearsing it. HA ha ha!!

  • @OdinAlcatraz

lol - yeah - close but this is better!

  • heheeeeeeeeeeeh, I 've got the blood red rick with black hardware ;)

  • I love that "chug" you're getting at 0.23

  • Oh my god, this tone. Love this bass. One day... one day.

  • Andy Dick rocking out on the bass!

  • Try to buy old rickenbacker lawsuit copyes, you get exact the tone as a rickenbacker.

i got a Ibanez lawsuit bass and it is so freaking goooodd.

  • nice bass guitar what brand?

  • I think a 4003 cost around $2000

  • @WolfMoonRock On Musician's Friend a Mapleglo 4003 is $1950 approximately.

  • A LOT

  • @vectron12 You're kidding right? The majority of iconic rick players use picks - Chris Squire, Lemmy, Paul McCartney etc. Just because someone uses a pick doesn't mean they are bad - They just want the attack that fingers don't provide.

  • nice! :) i mean the bass and the solo - Ricks ftw

  • do these typically have thick or thin necks?

  • Comment removed

  • Thin but fairly wide at the nut - takes a bit of getting used to...........

  • I love ricks 4003! how much does it cost?

I now have a Cort A4 and its an awsome bass, later i may buy a rick :) (if i earn enough tho)

  • @IronMaidenGuitarRs94, you can get a ric 4003 from eaby for like 1,500 but new they're about 2000

  • wow expensive but worth its price probably thanks for the reply :)

  • ive had my rick for 6 years now, once you play it you'll never want to put it down.

  • i would give my left nut to own one of these or a 4001 model.

  • hehe i get mine tomorrow:)

  • @NukeTheSlut were did you buy yours at? been trying to shop around seeing if i can get one cheaper then 2000$

  • hi!

i bought a new one on ebay at a german dealer...

but i have to say that it is a 4003 model...

you should look at ebay...there are some dealers who offer them

  • @JacHell666 i dont care if i would get the 4003 or 4001 whats the diff

  • @JacHell666 Just don't give your right thumb. That would be counterproductive.

  • This is the bass I want. Like I really fucking want it. Now.

  • i feel ya

  • @Canaveral305 me to i have a hofner but i want that 22

  • @Canaveral305 "CAUSE I WANT IT NOW, I WANT IT NOW, GIVE ME YOUR HEART AND YOUR SOUL, AND IM BREAKING OUT, IM BREAKING OUT, LAST CHANCE TO LOSE CONTROL" (MUSE, HYSTERIA which by the way sounds awesome on a rickenbacker...)

  • bought mine for 400 from a family friend hahahaha

  • wow you are one lucky s.o.b. now im green w/ envy ;(

  • ROTO'S BABY!

  • So very, very good playing. One suggestion though, dont stick too close to the bridge all the time, your getting a little too much high end, but very good playing

  • @Vaughnrush - don't be a DORK. You saw less than THIRTY SECONDS of this guy playing, and you want to change his fucking playing style with your smarmy little stuck-up advice?!

I DESPISE asses like you. He's playing a fucking RICK, for god's sake, and a rattly, chiming, chalky sound is IDEAL for this, and his bassline, so there's NOTHING wrong with playing on the bridge for thirty seconds.... or three-and-a-half minutes if he wants to.

Don't YOU play so much around your anus, it's too muddy.

  • imsowithuonthat

  • LoL... You just owned him!

    @Vaughnrush

Tell that to Lemmy, and let's see what he says to that!

  • sweeeet solo

  • Are you using any effects or is that just natural overdrive?

  • This man is ace! it's my Uncle tim :o)

  • is the 4003 better than the 4001 or worse

  • essentially the same with one less truss rod.

  • Different. The 4001 was before the 4003, so if you specifically want a new one, go with the 4003. If you're into old guitars, go with the 4001. If you're like me, and you don't really care when it was made, you're just worried if it's a good instrument, it just comes down to finding the right one. They're all a bit different, so if you can, play it before you buy it.

  • I own a Midnight Blue 4003 and I just love it. I find the Fender Precision easier to play but the Ricky has this awesomeness to it. The tone is so distinctive.

  • I too, also own a Midnight Blue 4003. I know what you mean about a Fender being easier to play. Most other basses are easier to play now that I think about it. The low tension isn't good for quick, low-action playing! Alittle too much flop! I'd recommend a Ric for people who want to play real SOLID basslines, rather than something of the likes of technical metal or jazz improv. What do you think?

  • I do like Ricks, used to play a friend's in a band, but too damn expensive. Just bought a Traben Array Attack for $400 brand new... sweet bass, 3 band EQ and active electronics, lots of tone possibilities, well constructed and don't have to refinace a mortgage to buy it ;)

  • how much do they cost more or less?

  • I love the 4001 switch in the treble tone knob. I flick that on and pull the signal through a distortion pedal and it's an instant guitar.

  • the rickenbacker sounds really different with a pick, i think this might have been the first time ive heard it like that

  • They also sound KICK, ASS played slap style =D

  • You need to listen to some Motorhead then.

  • That kicks the fuck out of my EB-0.

  • I get more than enough bottom end out of my own Ricky. This guy is using the mid or bridge pickup and is playing near the bridge. I've removed the pickup cover and I play with a pick, plucking between the pickups and it sounds hardcore!! I find the neck pickup is very thick without a lot of top end and I rarely use it. Best results are with the stereo splitter box using a pair of amps or a stereo preamp but this tends to scare PA techs so I stick to a powerful valve stack and drive 'em hard.

  • iv always wanted one o them but are they versatile in terms of genre?

  • Surely a bass line is a line played on a bass?

  • Dude by saying that you have proven to everybody that you have no musical experience at all. i play bass and i could really care less if someone uses a pick or not doofus.

  • What the fuck are you talking about? Have you ever listen to Chris Squire or Geddy Lee? This riffs are good and this guy has a great ability..

  • Anyone can play bass anyway they choose to play it. Pick or not, distortion effects or not, if you like the sound you get then go for it, there's no right or wrong way to play bass

  • thank you. and just because you have picks or distortion and you aren't playing slap doesn't mean that you have no talent or that you are trying to be a guitarist.

  • Exactly, ever hear how Lemmy from Motörhead plays his Rickenbackers, with distortion, a pick, and he plays different chords and other things that make it sound like a rough guitar. That's how I play, I couldn't learn slap to save my life, it's just not my style of playing.

  • i could never get a lot of bass on a 4003, just didnt work for me.

still a great bass, if I could afford to change strings a lot i would love to get another one and use it with a pick to get that Chris squire tone.

  • I'm sure you can squeeze some more bass tones out of it by playing over the bridge pickup more.

I play a Precision, but for some odd reason I really want a ricky....way too pricey for me at the moment though :(

  • There's a huge amount of bass tone on a Rick - there was even a reggae band used one back in the 70'S!

  • Stanley Clarke used one too!

  • You can get a lot of bass from a 4003, too. Depends how you EQ your amp.

  • imo i really like the jazz bass(not so much the music man) but the rickenbackers are just amazing and have such a unique tone

  • does anyone know what a bass like that one cost? please help me out

  • around 2000 euros here

  • LIKE 2 GRAND

Great sound but to much dough for me atleast ill stick to my p bass

  • Comment removed

  • These are rotos flats (JAZZ 45-105)

  • i am soooooo saving up to buy one, for like fucking 2 years now. why must they be 1250???

  • i have a musicman stingray double buck but im crap with finding tone. can you help me here? any tips on getting a punchy sound like your ric?

  • well i dont have a ric but you can either use different strings. or use a different amplifier

  • This guy has the tone up full and uses distortion to flatten it off a little - you should have no problem with a musicman as they are naturally very toppy and great basses.

  • thats great thank you i know a fella selling his pedals so i might try that. thanks

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome!

  • Devils Creek Rock!

  • Isn't that a Grand Funk Railroad tune?

I'm a 16 year old from Flint lol

  • Rick´s Sound is the best!

  • all the crap about pick vs fingerstyle.

its all about what your comfortable with and what sound you want. when i play harder distorted rock with my friends i pick and enjoy it. when i play funk, blues, jazz which i do more often i play fingerstyle. its w/e u want.

  • I thought Trace Elliots were basically "clean" sounding bass amps. How is this guy getting that crunchy tone?

    Pedal?

  • Rickenbacker 4003 - with it's distinctive tones!

  • By using a Rickenbacker.

  • there is more than just the Ric "twang" going on here. Sounds like some slight overdrive.

  • I would pull out my heart with a rusty spoon for a Ric

  • I was prepared to "pull out my heart with a rusty spoon" back when I owned a Ric 1974 4001 just trying to get the action and intonation set correctly.

Rics are difficult to adjust and maintain.

Someone once asked me:"what is the best Rickenbacker bass you EVER played?" and my answer was-- "A FENDER JAZZ!"

  • Not anymore they're not. 4003's adjust like any other bass.

  • any other basses don't have double truss rods that are mission impossible to adjust without hiring a luthier.

  • Don't know what your problem is. They're not hard to adjust.

  • I am pleased to here you got better mileage with yours. My 1974 4001 was nothing but heartbreak. I also had a fretless 4005 that was AMAZING.

I never said anything bad about the wonderful tone on Rics. I play Fender Jazz and Precisions now. Not likely ever to go back.

  • Well, if you get the chance, you might want to try a 4003. The main difference between it and the 4001 is that the truss rods are much easier to adjust. 4001's had this weird thing where you were supposed to move the neck into the position you wanted and then adjust the rods to hold it there.

On a 4003, you just adjust the truss rods and you're done, like any other bass (except that there are two rods).

You had a 4005 fretless? Wow, that must be so rare. I am envious.

  • Sounds awesome!

  • I really love the sound you get out of that Rick.

  • Sick riff, man!

  • sounds like intro of "golden earring" Long blond animal check it out on youtube. if you wanne play this go to ultimate guitar tabs and look for this song....

  • he may be old in your eyes...but hes good you tosser.

  • pick or finger

    its a CHOICE

  • Very Chrisesque! The Rickenbacker 4001/4003 is a quintessential bass to have in order to be badass in bass playing! You haven't lived until you have played a rick!

And, I prefer the older 4001's as the 4003's kinda had the hi's cut out a bit. The newer 4003's now have a knob switch to get those older 4001 tones, but an old rick is where it's at!

  • wery good man...

  • i never play with a pick but if my bass sounded like that i'd start i love the tone you get from fingerpicking tho

  • You look like the guitar teacher at my school

  • Damn nice picking, Im an avid pick player and I remember playing a ric copy (Cant remember what its called) and the toaster pick up was really fucking me up. I think I'm gonna opt for the 4004 when i get the money though.

  • my ric sounds extremely full with a pick . in fact i think it's the only bass besides a p bass that sounds good with a pick although i think the best way to distort a rick is with tubes being over driven with a hot plate . unless you can find cris squires maestro pedal

  • How exactly are you getting that tone? I love it.

  • Using a pick does that mate

  • I dont usually say it, but please no pick

no bass sounds to its fullest with a pick

  • I disagree. A pick brings out the higher frequencies, no?

  • sort of

I mean, you just can easily tell the difference between the smoother finger tone compared to the pick tone. I use finger for 99% of all songs, even the fast songs of lamb of god

  • You can certainly tell, different frequencies will come out given the different kind of material (i.e. skin vs plastic) is hitting the string with a different kinda force. Pick has more attack but fingers give a more rounded off sound. I think given the 'clunky' nature of Rickenbackers a pick would be more suitable. Same reason I prefer picking Fender and MusicMan basses. Warwicks/high-end Ibanezes on the other hand, you need to use fingers to really find the playing rewarding IMO

  • You sure can. I really prefer fingers on my bass purely because the bass was made based on Geddy Lee's bass, which hasnt seen a pick in year :O

But yes, I like playing with a pick on some songs, esp. Foetus of a New Day Kicking. It is a song that has a fast bass riff that can only be brought out with a pick

  • i use both styles. when i play in church i use my fingers but when im with my band i use the pick because of the different styles needed for the songs. eg i doubt many funk bass players use finger stle because the song is good with slap. but the likes of victor wooten who has mastered all aspects of bass playing makes him in my opinion a brilliant bass player.

  • I can understand playing multiple bass guitars (Jazz, Warwick), but selling your Ric? Ouch...

  • This is Cool
