Definitely the best scene in any movie i've ever seen, loved this, especially the fact that he puts the cigar in his pocket then at the end takes it out and puts it back in his mouth.
My favorite scene from my favorite movie. At this point in the film the viewer's impression of Leo is that he is a buffoon. The Coens needed this scene to make us understand why Leo is in charge. We totally understand after seeing it. :) Badassery on a whole other level. Thanks for posting. I love watching this.
Thanks for posting! My friend Ed, from Waterford, Ireland, used to say this is the "best scene in a movie about anything." Albert Finney still kicks much monkey ass, and it's kind of sad that this is one of the least well-known of the Coen Brothers' films. Great scene. Great flick!
I love this film, one of my favourite Coen bros. efforts- this scene in particular stands out, I cant hear 'Danny Boy' without seeing Albert Finney striding down the road Thompson blazing
I like this scene because, 1 it's awesome, and 2 it shows off Leo's psychic abilities when he transfers bullets into the Thompson with his mind, so he doesn't have to reload.
Im no expert on firearms but isnt it notoriously difficult to fire an automatic weapon like that without it running out of ammunition or overheating or the mechanism jamming up? I know its a film but that takes the hollywood reload rule piss just a little bit.
I was a production assistant on Miller's. This scene was shot in a combination of locations (if I remember correctly) 2 houses, a street exterior and four different sets on stage. The first shot, up until one gangster lets the other in the door, was done in Ann Rice's house. Finney's bedroom was two sets, one with the floor about four feet off of the ground to shoot under the bed. Just a little trivia.
@rwentz21 Thanks for the personal insight of the filming of this movie, mate. I can't imagine you're still a production assistant now, are you? Still work in the movies?
man, an absolutely flawless scene - the part when they show him stepping into his fancy slippers.. a perfect touch. you can tell he's been through worse.
People keep talking about the number of rounds fired but the truly impossible thing is the way he never stops firing. First thing you're taught in automatic weapons training is to fire in short, controlled bursts. If you don't then you lose control of the weapon. It's still an entertaining scene and all that didn't occur to me till much later.
Considering he spent 30+ seconds firing a gun that fires at a rate of 600 rpm minimum, it's pretty safe to say he shot well over the 100 round capacity of the drum. When the gun uses .45 ACP, you certainly don't need to shoot a person more than a few times to kill them. Even if he had terrible accuracy and the movie stretches the actual firing time out, he must have put over 50 bullets in the guy in the window.
When I first saw the movie upon initial release all those years ago, this is the scene (together, of course, with the famous 'walk in the woods') that I remembered most distinctly for a long time.
But then, I'm Irish and relentlessly nostalgic by nature.....;)
Ah the Coen brothers, long may they carry on making movies! Awesome film and full of so many great moments like this. I see what you mean about the Thompson although that is bulky enough to be the 100 round drum magazine they made for it.
Well then that's definitely dramatic licence but it's still a great scene. The Thompson weighs around 20 pounds with a 100 round drum and that's bad enough. I guess there's a point when film makers realise that they should break with reality a bit for good effect.
personally, I think every college kid should rip the Scarface poster off their wall and replace it with one of Alfred Finney, his smoking gun, and his smoking cigar. but that's just me.
@bluemonkjd Let's not go overboard...This movie is indeed better than scarface but Pacino's character has no rival. This scene is amazing but Scarface's 'say hello to my little friend' scene is epic.
@bluemonkjd Frank Petterson's cover of Danny Boy and Alfred Tinney with a Cigar and a Tommy Gun. Talk about BADASSERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i've shot a thompson before and the recoil on one those guns is pretty strong, you would definitly have to be an artist to acurately shoot that gun. one of my fav. scenes right here.
Hi, not looking for a fight, but the shootout scene in "Heat" beats this....Dont get me wrong, I have watched this movie so much I can say the script....But check out "Heat"....Cheers!
you cant really compare the two. Heat is a realistic movie, but the shootout here is clearly a formalistic and fantastic shootout. they're completely different, but still both great scenes.
Fantastic scene - BUT - A Thomson machine gun holds about 50 rounds, right? He fired a lot more than 50 rounds there...and where´d the cigar come from at the end? Thought he put it in the ashtray. Ah, Indistrial Light & Magic special effects...
well, there is a 100 round drum for the thompson, but he probably fired a lot more than 100 rounds. It was obviously overdone, but in its defense, gangsters in that day had an uncanny nack for modifying weapons, so who knows maybe you could say his held more.
it would have made more sence if he took the other guys chicago typewriter and started shooting at the drive bye. but he would have to had to have killed the othere thug before he lept from his roof. would have been more realistic. but thats hollywood for ya. but either way it was a BAD ASS scene non the less.
This scene is so powerful because it's just one guy, an old one at that, taking on a bunch of gangsters out on a hit on him. Plus Leo is Fearless. Plain and simple. Beautiful Showdown.
Fantastic scene, one of my favourites. Although the M1928 Thompson only carries 50 rounds in it's drum barrel magazine, and there he shot well over 170 without reloading, lol.
