I downloaded the song from iTunes and can get it to synch sometimes. It's not the best way to see this (having the audio would be WORLDS better of course!) but it's something. I hope they let you put the audio back on.
I know this seems klnd of trivial, but one thing I always liked about this video is that Todd's iconic black Gibson Flying V that he played in the Nazz returns at around 1:53.
look at the age and quality of this video...its nearly 30 years old....
if you has such a problem with it why dont you post it in top quality give a site to purchase it from instead of attacking fans who just want to share something great from the past..due to its age its auality isnt great, no fault of the owner..i just see this as bullying and it pisses me off..no wonder prince gave you so much shit:P
Oh my god, I haven't seen this since I was a kid. Used to show it between movies on Showtime, on some video segment thing call "Take Five". Ah, back when videos didn't take themselves so fucking seriously.
Hahaha...never seen this video - lmao...I'm surprised Rundgren would subject himself to this, even with his sense of humour...I played this album til the vinyl wore right through..."Feet..", "Libertine", "Hammer"...
Feet, nothing: *radio* failed me. I've never heard this song before, and it's got a ton of *wonderful* sounds and harmonies in it. Mmmmm... I guess I know the subject of my next YouTube safari. :)
Could not agree more. I disconected from radio along time ago. I love this song and alway (erroneously) looked for it under Todd Rundgren. Still did actually but you tube found it anyway. Yea for You Tube!!!!
@ProspectorSam I'd never heard this song either till I bought a Utopia greatest hits CD in January 1999. I assume it originally came out in early 80's. There's alot of great music never played on radio. And MTV or VH1 isn't likely to play it anymore. So I guess the Warners don't want to promote this great music by allowing it to be heard here. It's their loss.
Wow love this video. I remember seeing this often on a strange Nickelodeon show called Turkey TV. They also used to play Fish-Heads and I Wanna Be A Lifeguard by BLOTTO!
Wow that takes me back. Todd hired me to make the costumes for this song- it was one of my early costume gigs. Todd wanted a lot of feet so insects have a lot of feet.
The muscians were all in blue suits for the chroma key technique of inserting backgrounds. The actual background was the size of a dollhouse.
Nice to see all the positive comments and memories!
whooooooooooops...I guess Todd was the big long bug, hey? Yeah...well....whatever,. It took a lot of BALLS to go on TV in these get-ups so good for them, I say!
Was Todd "the bee"? If so hes the only one who rythm in the scene where they are all sittin together: the bee actually looks like its clapping to the beat! This so reminds me of that show THE BUGALOOS!
One of my all-time favorite videos! I've thought about it from time to time over the years, and just today it occurred to me to see if it was on YouTube.
What great imagery, simple and sweet. This is a classic!
Just to set the record straight...This was the SECOND VIDEO EVER ON MTV. The first was "video killed the radio star" by the Bungles. This is Todd Rundgren and Utopia, circa 1982. The song is off the self-titled LP called "Utopia". Hope that helps everybody out! (As for the TUBES references...TR produced alot of music for them, hence the similarity in sound.)
I haven't seen this video since I was a kid!! Always was a favorite of mine...THANK YOU for posting this, I've often wanted to see it again but never could find it.
This was not the Tubes. They were also a great band- still are. Tubes hits during this era were off the Completion Backward Principle album- namely "Talk to ya later" and "Sushi Girl."
outstanding. Thanks so much for posting this. This is pure talent and unique creativity. You can't help but smile during this. ha. Hammer in my Heart was also a great tune off this record.
Rundgren is an odd bird, but a good bird. Its really hard to categorize his music. Its rock, yes. ...but its also...I dont know what? The secret ingredient is probably Todds intelligence (he has a genius level IQ) and intelligence really stands out in rock-esp from that period. Thanks for posting!
Todd is still doing Great! You should see some of his avanguard perfomances, they would level you Still good music out there....The Liars dvd would be a place to start.... pjaydk88... how many women have made a fool of you since 1983?
fuck yeah 1983!!! I was 10 when I first saw this on MTV and i never forgot this video. been looking for it for years. much thanx! but one thing, for some reason I remembered it being the tubes.
They had awesome harmony. This was a fav of mine in the 80's. We had some cool as hell music then. and BIG hair. I'm saving my aquanet for when that trend comes back. lol
I think that the stripped bug is Roger Powell (keyboards), the purple bug is Willie Wilcox (drums), and the green bug is Kasim Sultan (bass). I got to meet them in Boston for an in-store promo and they were so nice to chat with.
Great song!! Too bad it stalled at #82 on the charts (Jan 1983). Utopia has quite a unique sound--I love their 1980 album "Adventures In Utopia" (the only other music of theirs I've heard).
OMG! This was one of my fav MTV vids when I was a kid! I never remembered who did this and I haven't seen this in years!!! Thank you SO much for posting this!!!
Wow... I completely forgot about this one. I'm sure I saw it on MTV at some point in the 80s. And I never would imagine Todd Rundgren dressing up as a bug.
I can't believe I'm watching this over 20 years later. I lived in an asthma hospital in Denver, and before there was MTV, there was a late-night weekend video show called FMTV that played it. Videos suck now. They're ridiculous. Back then they were great fun. Thanks for posting!
Hey, think about it. You could do a lot more with a Commodore 64 than they could with Citizen Kane, before computers! It all depends on the footage you start out with. The concept here was fun.
what's the name of the big band song?

I showed it to my young kids. They got a kick out of especially the part where the bugs are kicking each other's butts.
