Hi I just came across this today. I do not know if you make it into any of the schools you listed or not. I am the trombone professor at Hartwick College and I did not see you for an audition. I can certainly help you if you want let me know.
Out of tune. I'm in ninth grade and I can play this better than you. THAT MEANS YOU'RE BAD. Damn.... It's so baddddd. There are so many notes that are a whole half step out of tune because you obviously think you're too good to practice. No college is going to want you if you play like this. The ending triplets were SOOOO bad. Go practice or quit.
@AttackElves2 wow sir? who do u think you are to judge how good someone is... and comparing how good you are to him shows nothing. he is looking for conservative feedback.i could tell you that i also played this piece and im a ninth grader and that i played better then you but its not necessary.i dont think he is performance ready with this and needs more work on it thats all. And focus a lot on the slurs on the begging of the piece. the Bb to the Gb at the begging is what gets you rolling
Style! 3 of the scales: F, Eb, Bb, should be really easy for any trombone player!! Get those down. The D is kind of tough, just get through it slowly. Muscle memory is the key. The chromatic triplets could have been more clean. Try to bop the notes at a slower pace, moving your slide before you actually play the note and then speed it up. Also, i think it sounds better to breath befor the E that is right before the high C# instead of before the C#. But i understand if thats tough. Good Luck!
i always get off on everything because of tone quality. the tone is pretty good on this video, but can be improved. try to make more legato with less breaks in the first part. some out of tune notes too.
I got a superior on this piece for All-State auditions. There is a lot of practice required for this piece. Basically, you really have to be comfortable when you play this difficult piece. What was helpful to me was to hear a professional recording and to take note on how they execute each section of this piece.
ur taking the second part where it tells u 2 play marcato a little too fast cuz then its messing up ur intuition of tempo. btw definetly use more air for the upper notes but careful not to pinch ( some have a tendency) i played this at states and i got an excellent :\
Practice at a slower tempo but moving your slide just as fast between notes; this'll help you from accidentally glissing between notes. Really nice pedal, and nice high C-sharp too! You can even take the E-flat major part slower, I believe it says 104 on the piece, which is slower than you may think. Lastly, and this is just my preference, when I play it (especially in the opening section) I like to use more alternate positions to decrease slide movement. Nice job man!
watch out for glissing some of the notes, need a bit more work on tounging :p also a little work on breathing in the correct places and you will be flying :) other help i could suggest is just listening to as many recordings of it as possiable and try and make yours sound like the others. one last thing in the allegro moderato practise the scales seprately to perfect them i sence a little bluffing at the moment other than that a great start :)
You have a great start on this solo (one of my favorites - I've played it and taught it many times.) First of all, you're missing some of the flats in the first section - check the notes carefully. You need to spend more time playing SLOWLY on the technical sections. If you take more time at slow practice, speeding it up is the easiest part - it just takes repetition.
Work hard at your intonation. Upper register especially is very sharp.
Keep practicing and good luck with your auditions.
yes, better intonation, articulation quality, and phrasing and it'll be fine. trust me i played this for about 5 auditions and i chose it myself because i love this song, just work on those things, take big breaths and play with confidence.
Good job. I played this piece for honors band auditions, and have listened to the Christian Lindberg recording. If you don't know who that is, look into it! Yeah, like a lot of these other people are saying, you need to use more air. It's amazing what that will do. Intonation is an issue sometimes, so practice with a tuner. As far as those fast passages go, don't fudge through them. I've done that many times and get scolded every time. Slow it down and then speed up when you are ready. Good luck
You're getting there. When practicing eliminate the harsh tones that get in the way. During your glisses make sure you move your slide a little quicker. Stop moving around so much. It affects the way you play. Play with more emotions and AIR. AIR. AIR. AIR. Tune the high notes because usually they tend to be sharp, but over all nice. ^_^
Hey gliss some scales, use no tounge, move your slide at the last possible moment and as fast as you can, and start with your metronome at the slowest tempo possible. this will help with the slide issues. you don't have a bad tone just need to eliminate the scoupies to make your tone sing. sorry for the long post.
Hey, well it sounds good overall, but definetely before the cadenza you're rushing alot of parts, and try to shape phrases more than just notes. I get that alot aswell. But use more forward moving air. Try pllaying it at a reduced tempo perfectly in time then speed it up until you're back at the original tempo. Just take alittle more time and you'll be fine. It also sounds like your tongue is being alittle TOO harsh and use more of a "lu" or "du" tongue, good job though
Not bad, not bad. I played this myself for the All-State recital. You seem to know the rhythm decently, work on getting the notes right. Also, a lot of this song is meant to be flowing and together and you seemed to want to separate everything, but this can be fixed with airstream. For the 16th runs, theyre only scales, get to know them so you play them from memory, not reading, and that will help some. Other than that just technical things someone else can tell you, im out of room. Decent job.
you need to move your slide faster, shape your phrases better, use more air, have better posture, work on having a straight tone and then add vibrato for effect, and tuning was a big issue too
The 16th note runs aren't as fast as you think, and really need to be cleaner than that. Also dynamics really need to be added in, and things such as accents, tenutos, you know.
sounds good. when you play it, blow consistent air. its a romantic piece where most things are connected and legato, so especially at the top, things gotta be together and smooth.
when i play this piece you gotta look at the piece as one whole work. you have the slow parts, where its smooth and connected, then the faster parts. bring out the contrast and the emotion.
I did this solo about a year ago for a solo and ensemble competition. You do absolutely fantastic on this piece, but here's a thing that might help, and it's a difficult task, but just try it, it will work. Sit down in front of a tuner and play every single note of the song and find out where you tune to that note in that particular phrase. If you play in tune, you will score alot more, i promise you. Keep on playing, and good luck with whatever audition it is you have
het man, its not bad. but i would say you could probably put some more air through the horn for a little better tone. maybe a little more open teeth? but a faster air stream will help get rid of th growl you have sometimes. just try to be a little more music with it.
ahh i have that same trombone, i think. conn 88 with a rose brass bell.
alternate positions! use them in the Andante Sustenuto section especially. like, use a sharp 4th for the F (3rd note) and then 4th for the D after it. it makes the whole thing so much easier.
and that part where you have that Bb Phrygian scale, I use 1, 4, 2, 1, 4, 3, 3. My private teacher shuns me when i use 1st position for Ab, and sometimes even Bb. and in the Eb section its easiest to use 4th for the D's sometimes
it's not an 88h, has a counter weight. Maybe a yamaha xeno? a guy at my school had an edwards with a counter weight that looked alot like this one. iono.
my tips: keep practising, practice the beginning LOUD (just to get comfortable with the intervals..), watch this video a lot and take every little mistake in and think about what you would have them sound like instead (after my recording of the von koch monolouge, my playing of it improved tenfold, if not more..), play lots and lots of bordogni vocalise etudes and even more long notes to build security of sound and FLOW.. good job getting through the whole piece!
hey you sounded pretty good Im also doing this piece um the one thing I have trouble with is tounging and you do it pretty well so good job. I dont know if that was you spit valve making that sound but it sounded like you had a drum going on work on the faster parts I would say. Make sure you blow enough air on you high notes and please work on that ad lib. Im sure you can sound a lot better. Wish you all the best hope it goes well
Next time you do this (if you do) try facing the camera up, so maybe you dont feel nervous. and the second section, with an Eb scale after the cadenza, dont feel so obligated to go so fast. i realized it sounds just as good, if not better, if i do the tempo marking instead of trying to do the pro speed.
but you sound great, and you have a large horn which is pretty cool idk why. but good luck!

I think private lessons would be beneficial if you don't already have them. And how could you leave out the trill man?! Just use your trigger!

All of your quicker scales. Take them slow and once you perfect it... move it up a step quicker until you can do it.
Relax on your high tones,

more support. what was it you were auditioning for and did you make it?
damenschwalbe 3 years ago
Take time on the cadenza
Good support for high notes, just make sure you maintain it
Nice pedal, pitch adjusted and maintained well
Play low bass clef F's in 6 rather than trigger 1
Play it through with a piano, will help pitching, intonation and keep tempo steady
Fast sections are not as fast as they seem, take them steadily at first but don't rush
Might be mic but a greater dynamic contrast could be good
Nice start

songs in Gb, watch the Gbs
make sure you pronounce your tonguing as you move your slide, rather than after, eliminating that slurry effect between notes.
on the phrygean scale from Bb to high Bb make sure you mind the key and support to hit the Gb Ab and Bb

all you need is air and a good airstream. that will fix all of your problems

if u take more air and more important u have to use un the correct way the airflow...
