@axelaxelmcr i get it, it makes a difference if its about homosexuals. I'd still react the same to the film if its about a man and a woman because i treat homsexuals as ordinary people. The story is deep but for a story about the two cowboys that spans about 20 years, its too artsy for it that adds no specialty to it. So bamanck is right, Brokeback Mountain is ovverrated.

I think Brokeback deserved it because it was so deep. The fact that they were two men adds a plot twist but if a movie this good were made between a man and a woman I think it still would have deserved to win. In this movie the characters were very real and I could understand their emotion. Most love stories are not like that for me.
Brokeback deserved the oscar! But if any movie was worth the oscar that year apart from BM it was Munich, not Crash!!! Crash was lame in many aspects. Only some American critics saw Crash as a great film. It was so basic
brokeback mountain IS a better story, simply because it IS between two men. The film isn't just about banging secretely in a tent, its all about having such a deep, passionate secret that if anyone were to find out it would destroy everything. The film is different, and there isn't much else like it out there on the market. Then again, Crash is really unique too, but i enjoyed brokeback mountain more tbh.
I think people are a little biased. Just because Brokeback Mountain was about a love story between two men doesn't make it anything special. In the end, Crash is a better film.
BBM is an all-time great, doing quite well in the best of the decade lists of the past 18 months (top 5 when you compile, with There Will Be Blood, Mulholland Drive and Eternal Sunshine). that may well be so, although certainly the interest in Oscars has been declining, possibly because they've been choosing so miserably. anyway, isn't it rather superficial to say specifically that it's more important how "big" an award is than whether the right movies are honoured? that comment alone gives you a pretty clear picture of what the Oscars are worth - not much, if their "bigness" accounts for more than their actual choices. May I suggest that you missed the point?
I'm not gay but this movie needed more of Gyllenhall taking a mouthful of Ledger. Who the fuck does Ang Lee think he is. Really a dissapointing watch after all the hype.
What dude? I'm just saying I thought it was disapointing there wasn't more cock in this movie. I felt Ang Lee was holding back. What I can see Harvey Kietel's dick in The Piano but I can' handle seeing Gyllenhall or Ledgers package? This is just my opinion but I think Ang Lee prefered to stay in his hollywood safe bubble instead of giving us a real story about gay cowboys.
A movie watched as a result of pressure of reviews/publicity is not a good movie. Brokeback draws the viewer in from initial lush panoramic cinematography to zoom in on a highly intimate study of love both sexual/non sexual both homo/heterosexual. Performances are superb. Ledger/Gyllenhaal deserve rightfull praise but Williams is as good if not at times better. Jake is a canny chooser. He was in THE movie of 2005 and again in THE movie of 2007 (Zodiac)both of which flew well below the radar.
Brokeback is a socially and culturally important movie, I cannot dispute this. People should see it. I feel the same about Crash, though. But set aside the "gay" issue, Brokeback becomes a by the numbers Romance with lovely cinamatography and fine performances. Set aside the "racism" issue of Crash, you still get a movie of interwoven plotlines with complex and very real characters showing how events that seem to be completely unrelated still impact one another. Crash is simply a better film.
The Brokeback Mountain vs Crash Fiasco showed the Oscars for what they really are: Pointless and very insignificant.
What gets to me though, is how the world still sees the Oscar as THE top award. You can't buy a DVD without reading on the cover how many oscars that film won. This is a great pity as the Oscars made so many unforgivable mistakes in the past.
Man, Crash blows. It was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The fact that Brokeback Mountain lost best picture at the oscars is completely absurd.
Crash is a fine movie, it's just that Spike Lee has done any number of films about race with so much more depth and complexity than that movie. Crash is fluff, maybe well done fluff with some good performances, but still fluff.
Brokeback Mountain is one of the best movies of the decade in my opinion. It's so beautiful and so emotional.
i agree 100 percent Brokeback Mountain should have won the academy award for best picture and it is great to see it win here. i cannot believe crash won. Brokeback is a beautiful picture and it always will be. Rest in Peace Heath.
I'm not trying to badmouth the movie, I'm just saying that if you were to replace Heath Ledger's character with a woman, the movie wouldn't have done half as well.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think that's true; make one of the characters a woman, and you have a predictable, clichéd love story. Making it a story between two men just seemed like a gimmick to me - there was really nothing new in the film at all. However, the movie's fans used it as a chance to label anybody who didn't like the film homophobic. (Cont'd)
It seems as though that tactic worked, as the movie won more best picture awards than Schindler's List. Had it won the Oscar, I think that it would have become like Titanic, Dances with Wolves etc. - movies that got an amazing amount of praise & hype for long enough to get them many awards, but once it wore off they were instead used as evidence in the age-old 'the Academy are idiots' talk. Crash would not have been my choice for Best Picture either, but I wasn't really bothered by its win.
The story is a universal love story between 2 persons. It is unversial in the sense that the love itself is intrinsically no different from any other love. However, what's unique is that, given the time and places in the story, this love was burdened/tortured by social intolerance, taboo, fears, and ignorance. It's a very delicate and compelling story-telling. If you think you can just replace the 2 gay characters with 2 straight men, obviously you didn't spend any time to understand the story.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That's not what I meant - from the very start of the film I guessed exactly where it was going, and there was no 'big development' that I didn't see coming. The basic plot is one that we've seen many, many times before, so my argument was that it was viewed as the Oscar frontrunner principally because it involved a romance between two men as there was nothing otherwise new or original about the movie (in my opinion, at least).
nothing new or original? Not sure what you menat by that. I'm sure, at least, the screen play is original instead of plagiarism. I would say the story line is new as I've not read another story that's the same or similar. Otherwise, you can pretty much say the same thing ("nothing new and original") about just every single movie (including every single heterosexual love movie).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I have nothing against Heath at all - a very talented man who did a great job in this film. My problems with the movie were not him or any of the cast members, but rather that I felt the movie was formulaic in its story arc and quite overwrought at key moments. Lee needed . . .
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
. . . a greater degree of subtlety here, and at times I could practically see him behind the picture holding up a big sign saying 'FEEL SAD/ELATED/etc.' Taking this potentially interesting story and characters and treating the whole thing in this way was, I thought, a real disservice.
lol? the whole point of the movie is that it's two men in love when they according to society shouldn't be. so ofcourse it wouldnt do well if you took away the whole point of the movie
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
"Brokeback Mountain" was a horrible Love story if you think about it, and didn't make sense. If it was about a man and a women cheating on eachother, then it would have been boring and stupid. The only thing that makes this movie interesting and credible, is that it is about 2 men!!!!
but looks to me that many ppl misunderstood u too, since u wrote ""Brokeback Mountain" was a horrible Love story if you think about it, and didn't make sense."
Heath was so cheated out of the best actor Oscar, as was the film, by a bunch of old homophobes calling the shots at the Acaedmy...namely, none other than Tony Curtis--a shitty actor whose most famous role, was ironically enough as a drag queen in 'Some Like it Hot!' I hope the old bastard spend his last days regretting how he cheated this wonderful, young gifted actor and this film out of the recognistion they both richly deserved! Remember, it was because of bigots like Tony Curtis!
Crash still sucks! I saw Brokeback again for the umpteenth time last night on TV and it still makes me cry. A true icon of a movie. The only thing Trash is an icon of is the Dollar DVD Bin at WalMart.
Is that even legal? Wow... but I guess it's a good thing in a way... It gives the movie more publicity and people would hopefully want to see it more! (Isn't reverse psychology great?) ... though it still pisses me off...
The United Kingdom has a rich history of famous British actors/actresses. Lawrence Olivier, Bob Hope, Elizabeth Taylor, Wendy Hiller, Sean Connery, Ian McKellan, Orlando Bloom, Jude Law, Helen Mirren, Patricia Routledge, Peter O'Toole, Joan Collins, Judi Dench, Kenneth Branaugh, Clive Owens, Daniel Craig, Richard Burton, Angela Lansbury, and Joanna Lumley. Combined with American film and television as well as the authority of awards, the Oscars, the Anglosphere dominates the entertainment world.
totally agree even im not british, but you forgot Vivien Leigh,Elizabeth Taylor,Charles Chaplin,Maggie Smith,Cary Grant,Miranda Richardson, ufff, we'll never finish, congratulations
The emotion I felt at the end of Brokeback Mountain haunted me for days afterwards. That's the sign of a truly great movie, that it stays in your mind like that. Unfortunately some people seem to dismiss it as "boring" because I don't think they open themselves up completely to the two central characters of Jack and Ennis. When you sympathise with and understand their situation it becomes an incredible movie. If you feel uncomfortable or can't sympathise with them it probably just seems boring.
It's a matter of taste. Brokeback wasn't boring if you took the time to appreciate and understand it. True, it didn't have explosions and cops with guns like Crash did, but that certainly doesn't qualify it as "better."

I'm not trying to badmouth the movie, I'm just saying that if you were to replace Heath Ledger's character with a woman, the movie wouldn't have done half as well.
jku250 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
I think that's true; make one of the characters a woman, and you have a predictable, clichéd love story. Making it a story between two men just seemed like a gimmick to me - there was really nothing new in the film at all. However, the movie's fans used it as a chance to label anybody who didn't like the film homophobic. (Cont'd)
DistinguishedFlyer 3 years ago
It seems as though that tactic worked, as the movie won more best picture awards than Schindler's List. Had it won the Oscar, I think that it would have become like Titanic, Dances with Wolves etc. - movies that got an amazing amount of praise & hype for long enough to get them many awards, but once it wore off they were instead used as evidence in the age-old 'the Academy are idiots' talk. Crash would not have been my choice for Best Picture either, but I wasn't really bothered by its win.
DistinguishedFlyer 3 years ago
The story is a universal love story between 2 persons. It is unversial in the sense that the love itself is intrinsically no different from any other love. However, what's unique is that, given the time and places in the story, this love was burdened/tortured by social intolerance, taboo, fears, and ignorance. It's a very delicate and compelling story-telling. If you think you can just replace the 2 gay characters with 2 straight men, obviously you didn't spend any time to understand the story.

DistinguishedFlyer 3 years ago
nothing new or original? Not sure what you menat by that. I'm sure, at least, the screen play is original instead of plagiarism. I would say the story line is new as I've not read another story that's the same or similar. Otherwise, you can pretty much say the same thing ("nothing new and original") about just every single movie (including every single heterosexual love movie).

I have nothing against Heath at all - a very talented man who did a great job in this film. My problems with the movie were not him or any of the cast members, but rather that I felt the movie was formulaic in its story arc and quite overwrought at key moments. Lee needed . . .
DistinguishedFlyer 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
. . . a greater degree of subtlety here, and at times I could practically see him behind the picture holding up a big sign saying 'FEEL SAD/ELATED/etc.' Taking this potentially interesting story and characters and treating the whole thing in this way was, I thought, a real disservice.

"Brokeback Mountain" was a horrible Love story if you think about it, and didn't make sense. If it was about a man and a women cheating on eachother, then it would have been boring and stupid. The only thing that makes this movie interesting and credible, is that it is about 2 men!!!!

The United Kingdom has a rich history of famous British actors/actresses. Lawrence Olivier, Bob Hope, Elizabeth Taylor, Wendy Hiller, Sean Connery, Ian McKellan, Orlando Bloom, Jude Law, Helen Mirren, Patricia Routledge, Peter O'Toole, Joan Collins, Judi Dench, Kenneth Branaugh, Clive Owens, Daniel Craig, Richard Burton, Angela Lansbury, and Joanna Lumley. Combined with American film and television as well as the authority of awards, the Oscars, the Anglosphere dominates the entertainment world.

If you're not the kind of person who likes love stories then obviously it would be boring
spamvicious 3 years ago 13
