2:09 makes me jump out of my seat everytime.... i just recently discovered bill stewart. never heard anyone quite like him. he completely reinvented drumming for me..a flame was just ignited
I had the privilege of seeing Bill conjure up a mesmerizing onstage storm with Pat Metheny and Larry Grenadier back in '99. They were all magicians, all three of them. I was carried to another reality altogether. I didn't know about Bill at the time and went to the show mainly to see Pat, but being a drummer myself, Bill quickly stole my attention. Absolutely brilliant drummer. Unquestionably one of the best.
difference between bill stewart and most of other drummers is similar to the difference between classical snare drumming and marching-rudimental snare drumming
I just got a Gretsch Catalina Club jazz set in Copper Sparkle. It's set up just like Bill's and I must say, I really enjoy playing the smaller set up (one rack and one floor tom, 18" bass drum and snare). It really makes you become more creative with your phrasing and polyrhythms. I am having a lot of fun playing the set. Bill is always a great inspiration for practice.
He's got the Jack shit going. And I hear Roy too. The clarity of his strokes are impeccable and his sense of time is uncanny. Great drumming with interplay. Bill kills!

the secret is all in the drum heads guys. Legend has it that those heads used to be on buddy rich's kit and bill has somehow channeled buddy's power through thus making him the beast of a jazz drummer he is now... true story.
@bea5ToloG... It's funny, when I looked at this video the hihat stand had as much relevance as the guitarist's socks.... You are missing out on some real good stuff here... Cheers...
I highly recommend the DVD "Peter Bernstein Trio Live at Smoke". It's about 1.5 hours of this trio, including this tune. Same fantastic playing by all. These guys have been my favorite group for about 15 years. DVD is available at the big A ____ zon store online.
Those toms are tuned to jazz perfection . I've seen a couple of videos from this concert and in both his hihat stand keeps sliding away . Odd that ...
You gotta love those awesome buzz strokes & rolls!. I've seen this man play with Scofield and he bewitched the audience completely. With a little help from John ofcourse :)
Bill's KILLER......anybody who can play like that with so much feeling, grove, great dynamics an can pull the hats back to him with his foot while his playing!!! what can you say.
I have been looking for this DVD for some time now, could you possibly tell me who produced it? I would love to get my hands on a copy of it, even tho i can you tube it.
Yeah, I mean the guy is not normal, possibly not of this earth. Such an unassuming guy too, he's not running around promoting himself as the genious he is. He is on a never ending quest to get to the next jam and do what he does best.
Honestly there's something wrong with Stewart. I've never once heard him play any objectionable or wasted beat or screw up, drop a stick never. His mind is a torrent of new and cool ideas when he's playing and soloing. Always fresh and interesting and he keeps getting better and better.
you're so wrong. Check out Maceo Parkers Mo' roots. Check out that album and you will think twice about your own groove trying to cop his pocket for the rest of your life. Trust me...check out the album...check it out.
i saw Stewart with John Scotfield last year, the guy was just amazing. After the show i went backstage and talked to him, about his ride techniqe, he is an amazing guy, and an exelent musician, no doubt.
i had the fortune of seeing him live in LA with John Scofield about 3 years ago. the whole band was amazing, but bill's solos blew me away like no other. he made the kit sing melodies...

He seems to be a humble guy. Having a gig and recording a dvd with a broken cymbal needs some balls :)

i would have no idea how to even begin transcribing bill or brian blades playing.. its so free.. so unorthodox but yet so damn innovative
hihats everywhere, cymbals everywhere, toms, snare rolls
breathtaking
