  • 2:09 makes me jump out of my seat everytime.... i just recently discovered bill stewart. never heard anyone quite like him. he completely reinvented drumming for me..a flame was just ignited

  • great hihat playing by the way

  • what amazing touch, tone and feel this guy has!

  • All that while keeping his hi hat from running away!! Now that's something else!

  • He looks like Wash from Firefly. I like him even more.

  • 0:32 casual hi hat slide

  • Seriously who are the assholes that go around disliking all this great music on youtube? I swear it has to be like one guy

  • @cynicaldrumming........ i think they just go around hating stuff....idiots

  • MONSTER

  • ahhhhh 1:35-1:54!!!!!!

  • I had the privilege of seeing Bill conjure up a mesmerizing onstage storm with Pat Metheny and Larry Grenadier back in '99. They were all magicians, all three of them. I was carried to another reality altogether. I didn't know about Bill at the time and went to the show mainly to see Pat, but being a drummer myself, Bill quickly stole my attention. Absolutely brilliant drummer. Unquestionably one of the best.

  • I'd give my nuts for that drum set.

  • difference between bill stewart and most of other drummers is similar to the difference between classical snare drumming and marching-rudimental snare drumming

  • this boy can play

  • I just got a Gretsch Catalina Club jazz set in Copper Sparkle. It's set up just like Bill's and I must say, I really enjoy playing the smaller set up (one rack and one floor tom, 18" bass drum and snare). It really makes you become more creative with your phrasing and polyrhythms. I am having a lot of fun playing the set. Bill is always a great inspiration for practice.

  • @chungiemunchin I have to agree with you completely!

  • That's what I call accuracy.

  • He seems to be a humble guy. Having a gig and recording a dvd with a broken cymbal needs some balls :)

  • i would have no idea how to even begin transcribing bill or brian blades playing.. its so free.. so unorthodox but yet so damn innovative

hihats everywhere, cymbals everywhere, toms, snare rolls

    breathtaking

  • the 3 people who disliked this should be skinned and used to make new heads for bill's kit

  • @houseofburn What a horrible thought! Those heads would be highly unmusical! ;)

  • @houseofburn That is freaking funny! You had two drummers breaking up with laugther man!

  • @houseofburn Yeah man that`s the right answer for comments maked by some idiots here!! I totally agree with you...

  • He's got the Jack shit going. And I hear Roy too. The clarity of his strokes are impeccable and his sense of time is uncanny. Great drumming with interplay. Bill kills!

  • the secret is all in the drum heads guys. Legend has it that those heads used to be on buddy rich's kit and bill has somehow channeled buddy's power through thus making him the beast of a jazz drummer he is now... true story.

  • @drumdadio Sure.

  • @drumdadio yeah, okay. You keep believin that

  • OMG @ 01:36 he's beating the crap outta that ride and it sounds soooo good! :)

    love it!

  • @Drumming2thelord Yeah he's killing it.

  • kickfuckingass

  • someone buy this man a new hihat stand...

  • @bea5ToloG... It's funny, when I looked at this video the hihat stand had as much relevance as the guitarist's socks.... You are missing out on some real good stuff here... Cheers...

  • @jad1460 i cant even see his socks

  • @bea5ToloG point and case.

  • I highly recommend the DVD "Peter Bernstein Trio Live at Smoke". It's about 1.5 hours of this trio, including this tune. Same fantastic playing by all. These guys have been my favorite group for about 15 years. DVD is available at the big A ____ zon store online.

  • 2:10 - 2:11 sweet

  • Those toms are tuned to jazz perfection . I've seen a couple of videos from this concert and in both his hihat stand keeps sliding away . Odd that ...

  • Tony Williams for the kill.

  • You gotta love those awesome buzz strokes & rolls!. I've seen this man play with Scofield and he bewitched the audience completely. With a little help from John ofcourse :)

  • bill is the man... but please if someone have the complete version of this song ... peter bernstein´s solo is amazing 100 stars

  • ok ...ive been playing for twenty years now....and i wont gush....i wanna say....BILL IS LIKE BUTTA!!!.......AND ITS BEAUTIFUL BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bill's KILLER......anybody who can play like that with so much feeling, grove, great dynamics an can pull the hats back to him with his foot while his playing!!! what can you say.

  • 2:12 blew my fucking mind O_O

    Bill Stewart is unreal.

  • Best jazz drummer there is. Awesome drum solo.

  • Wow!

  • his ride has a bite taken off the edge

C is for both Cymbal and Cookie...

  • Is that an 18 inch kick

  • looks like it...

  • yes

  • this guy grooves hard for real!

  • bringing the traditional jazz set up some serious freshness!

  • Great player there. I agree about the drums sounding great but I'm not a fan of his cymbals

  • This is drumming as good as it gets.. a Drummer who is made of music and the most beautiful sounding Drums i ever had the pleasure of listening to..

  • So good

  • Benenunes,

I have been looking for this DVD for some time now, could you possibly tell me who produced it? I would love to get my hands on a copy of it, even tho i can you tube it.

    Thanks.

  • Yeah, I mean the guy is not normal, possibly not of this earth. Such an unassuming guy too, he's not running around promoting himself as the genious he is. He is on a never ending quest to get to the next jam and do what he does best.

  • Honestly there's something wrong with Stewart. I've never once heard him play any objectionable or wasted beat or screw up, drop a stick never. His mind is a torrent of new and cool ideas when he's playing and soloing. Always fresh and interesting and he keeps getting better and better.

  • when i started reading your post i was like "wtf is this guy talking about?" but i must say you are 100% right!

    xD

  • Larry Goldins in organ

  • looking for friends

i liked this video :) EX

  • fucking hi hat..... still great vid..... i jizzed in my pants

  • Nice !

  • He had enough feel for Maceo, Wycliffe Gordon and James Brown...

  • you're so wrong. Check out Maceo Parkers Mo' roots. Check out that album and you will think twice about your own groove trying to cop his pocket for the rest of your life. Trust me...check out the album...check it out.

  • Bill stewart has without a doubt created his own unique voice.

  • i saw Stewart with John Scotfield last year, the guy was just amazing. After the show i went backstage and talked to him, about his ride techniqe, he is an amazing guy, and an exelent musician, no doubt.

  • seen him with scofield and swallow this year - lucky me...

anyway stewart impressed me that much, he's a freakin genius

  • bill stewart el mejor baterista de jazz contemporáneo!!!!

  • i had the fortune of seeing him live in LA with John Scofield about 3 years ago. the whole band was amazing, but bill's solos blew me away like no other. he made the kit sing melodies...

  • Toms sound beautiful.

  • Even that wandering hihat stand doesnt stop him!!!

  • haha before I watched the video I thought that the comment you made was about his time but now I see the hihat physically wondered.

  • awesome!

  • a true natural!!!!

  • ten stars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • SICK SICK SICK!!!!!!

  • his drumming gives me such a huge boner!

  • so much passion...T~T

  • Bill Stewart is playing the 2008 modern drummer fest!!!!

he MURDERED it at MD 1997, 11 years later and worth the wait! Bill Stewart is the man!!!

  • listen to those toms. tuned so perfectly

  • My favorite jazzdrummer :)

How can anyone rate this below 5 stars?

  • as usually - just fuckin amazing!!!!!!

    I love bill!

  • ¡Maldito genio!

  • all gretch baby..

  • Bill Stewart is awesome! What amazing technique this guy has.

  • i love that snare!!! deos anyone Know what he's using

  • Early 90's, 14x6.5 Ludwig hammered bronze w/Imperial lugs. He uses a modern version with tube lugs now.

  • What can I say... a true Jazz drummer at work!!!
