Bobby was more of a natural baritone bass than anything else. When he sang in his most natural register he sounded so much like Red Foley that Red Foley did a double take (they were friends). His range was phenomenal and his ability to harmonize and blend allowed him to make a good living without being the star.

@CJJ51 no one will ever be in marty's league as a singer. my favorite singer of all time. bobby sykes and don winters were good but only shadows compared to marty robbins.!

I think Bobby would readily admit, fine singer that he was, that he just wasn't in Marty's league, but very few other singers were.
