@oleksiy1000 - good job! that's exactly what i was referring to - it needn't be a pia carry; the actual skill is called "management of drowning victim" (not do a pia carry). ;-) that being said, if a pia carry is done well, it's very effective.
It's nice to be able to do the pia carry, but note that the actual NLS standard does not specify what type of carry needs to be used, only that you need to approach the victim such that they cannot grab you and that the victim's head and shoulders are above the water from the point of contact to the point of safety. So try not to worry too much! :)
True, the standard is what it is. There are also variations of the PIA carry. What is important, is to demonstrate at least one skill that works. Most candidates want to know exactly what to do, at least at the start. Having guarded now for over 30 years, I find the PIA is the fastest approach when executed properly.
@TheArsenalist i just did my NLS and i did underarm carry and sometime during the rescue i user one arm to hold under shoulders and other arm to help carry and i still [passed because the Shoulders were above water the whole time.
@purpleprinc355 - Most candidates get overly nervous at the start and once they get into the swing of things calm right down. Practising will make you feel a lot better as well. NLS is a lot of fun!
I am a fairly small girl and I found that if you can master that dolphin kick after entry and hold your breath til you get the victim on your hip it helps!! Take another good breath once you have them and then get them to the side of the pool. I used to have a weak eggbeater so I used scissor kick. Hope that helps you 0biggaj0. :)
Practice with a small partner. Girls tend to float better than boys so find a small female partner. Once you get the idea, you can progress to larger partners. If carrying the victim on your hip is awkward, try placing them on your tummy and swim backwards. Remember the victim must sit above your belly button or hip bone for this to work. Too low and its hard; if theyre too high; you cant get air when you need it. Hope that helps.
Excellent, I would have just carried her over 2m to the side of the pool instead of the end

Nicely done.

the pia carry is very effective using your hip to carry the victim, anything else besides egg beater is highly ineffective

nnaaddoouura 2 years ago
Use your strongest kick
lifeguardlloyd 2 years ago
We can use scissor kick to do that ? so nice ima do that then.
nnaaddoouura 2 years ago
Any of the lifesaving kicks are acceptable. Eggbeater, whip kick, or scissor kick.

Nice Pia carry. I'm currently taking NLS and the only 2 things I have troube with is the brick and deep water spinal carry
coldtemperature 2 years ago
The trick to the brick is to keep your hand under the brick and swim on your back. Make sure one arm is pulling in a scull.

It looks so easy when you do it. I'm taking my NLS this week and I'm hoping I'll be able to do it too.

It is easy. It does take practise.
