  • You guys are great! You do so much for the swing dance community - kudos! - and you're really kind and friendly, too!

  • Hi Patrick and Natasha, I just started swing dancing and when I watched everyone shim sham I knew I wanted to learn it. Thanks for teaching me with this video, I can't wait to dance this Sunday and try it out on the dance floor with everyone!

  • I need some help. Can you guys post a video showing exactly how to do this routine. I am a black girl who can not dance. This dance looks easy, but I tried and can not do it. So just do it step by step. OK???

  • what the fuck was that hahahahahahahahahaha

  • Makes me feel so happy! I love it!

  • there is no showmanship in this, its really lacks any and all flashiness and theatricality, sorry, also not very crisp in the movements

  • hêhé_Î_fêÉl_só_lONElÿ_tôDàY

  • You guys have definitely got it!!!!! I learned Shim Sham with Frankie Manning. I wish Frankie was still with us... He could out dance all of us, and he was the consummate gentleman. If more people would just let go and dance there would be alot less trouble in the world! Dance!!

  • Great video! Can you tell me if all Shim Sham steps are the same? At my swing club they always play Billy Elliot's "The Shim Sham Song" for their Shim Sham dance, would they be using the same routine you just showed here?

  • @FilmsbyChris Hey Chris, Thanks for the comment. Yes, all the Shim Sham steps are the same. The most common songs are Tain't What You Do by Jimmie Lunceford or Billy May and Tuxedo Junction by Erskine Hawkins. The Shim Sham Song is a more recent song written by Bill Elliott during the Swing revival specificaly to be played in place of the other songs. The only change in the steps that you'll notice depending on the song is the presence or not of a bridge after the end of the first part.

  • Thank you so much!

  • Wonderful!

I'm taking lessons from Heptown.com in Sweden, and every week there's dance evenings you can go to, and everybody's dancing lindy hop. Suddenly the music changes, and most dancers start to cheer, and then starts doing the Shim Sham, and we beginners dont really know what's happening, so we just take a step back and clap hands to the music, just watching it all, maybe 30-40 people doing the Shim Sham.

It could really be taken from a movie. =)

  • THANK YOU!!! I've been trying to learn this since February. It didn't work out too well and I'd always have to sit out. SO, thank you for this!!

  • @hey412you This is great to hear. See you maybe one day on the dancefloor.

  • Really good work! You make it look so easy ;) Keep doing what you do...and keep smiling! :)

  • @Amila85 Thank you.

  • Beautiful! So beautiful!!!! =)

    Kisss from Portugal!

  • Excelent. Best instructional video ive seen of the Shim Sham. I will be using it to brush up and teach to club. Thanks a lot for putting it on here.

  • @dancer9501 Thank you for your comment.

  • lol the tap dancing community is so confused by this haha!

  • 1:57

Goodness, she really knows how to shake those hips. Hot.

  • oh im sorry haha i was looking for the shim sham shimmy. im so sorry. its very catchy though :0

  • is that suppost to be tap? nothing like the tap shim sham...

  • @kissesforkaitlyn No, this is not the Tap version, this is the Lindy Hop version of the Shim Sham.

  • @PatrickAndNatasha Which originated from tap and jazz steps. So the tap Shim sham is very recognisable from this.

  • merci d'avoir donné le nom de chaque pas, c'est ce qui me manquait pour presque tout connaitre sur le shim sham,

thanks a lot lad for this great video

  • hmm it was nice but it would be easier if you weren't mirroring us, cuz i kept getting the left and right confused

  • @DirtyDave15 Why don't you check out the videos filmed from the back? Just click on the annotations to get to them

  • This couple is so cute.

  • Thank you for this great video--it has been such a help in picking up this routine and your energy and performance skill is pleasure to watch!

  • @emmasfoil Thank you very much for your kind comments :)

    Patrick & Natasha

  • thank you so much...the best step by step! Now I know how to do it :D

  • Your lessons has been a great help to me. I just have one wish - Can you do the whole routine facing the other way?

It is soo much easier to take a step to the right when you also take a step to the right.

  • @QLindy I guess with all the people asking for a video filmed from behind, we'll have to do it at some point :)

Thank you for your comment, we'll try to put it online in the next few days

    Patrick & Natasha

  • Great! :-)

  • Here you go, the videos facing the other way are online, enjoy and rate them if you like them :)

  • Ah OK cool! Great video series - really well formulated and taught!

  • Is this the shim sham dean collins style? At the breaks you add fish walks - not come across that before?

  • @uhsuswing This is the "normal" Shim Sham, also called sometimes Frankie's Shim Sham.

The fish tails are just a small touch we like to add to the break :)

    Patrick & Natasha

  • This is the best instructional video of the Shim Sham! Thanks sooooo much for posting this up, now I know how to do it! :]

  • We're very happy you enjoy it :)

    Thank you for your comment.

    Patrick & Natasha

  • love it! full view of you both with one cam angle is the best.....how do i buy your dvd?

  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your comment.

We don't have it on DVD... yet :) (but who needs a DVD when you have Youtube?)

    Patrick & Natasha

  • Hi Nikita,

The name of the song is Tain't what you do.

The version we're using is Billy Kyle's one, but it's usually Jimmie Lunceford version that's used in the Swing dance community. Other songs often used for the shim sham are Tuxedo Junction and Opus one.

    Good luck with your assignment.

    Patrick Szmidt

  • could you please help and tell me the name of the song and who its by becasue im doing a dance assignment on dance legends and doing Leronards shim sham dance. thanks :)
