This was my first video watched on You Tube. I thought "what a cool site, with so much on Dr. Dan". Little did I realize then I was stepping into a much larger universe of talent and entertainment. TV is a waste to me, except for sports and news perhaps.
@YAHsaves777 : I hear ya! The network news has morphed into a state-run propaganda agency. And as for sports, I'm a Mets fan, so no need to say anything more about wasting time watching sports.
@divisioneight LOL I hear you. With the nasty economic and political climate we are in I am spending a lot more time in the scriptures and encouraging others to do the same. That is why I feel sports and TV in general are a distraction and a waste of time. Too many Westerners have become "dumbed down."
@Marcus538 Yep. I believe the ancients were a lot more intellectually wiser, emotionally and physically stronger than people toay. especially Westerners with all of their creature comforts.
Thank you so much Steely Dan, for putting in the hard work, time, effort and talent into making one of the best soft rock albums of all time. If artists today put in that same type of real hard work and dedication to their craft, maybe mainstream music wouldn't have lost as much credibility and respect as it has.
And also, thank you for releasing this album, because without it, my dad never would have heard it as a kid, and came up with the inspiration for my first name: Aja ^_^
What a tight grove, super musicians dishing out their prowess effortlessly.. where is this kind of music gone nowadays? Cant wait to see Lee Ritenour in June in London.. will get some funk back :-)
@priyangshu01 , the music's still here, it's just harder to find today because so few people are willing to put in the time and effort it takes to play such great music. Everyone wants to be a star but they want to be a star NOW, and don't want to put in the years of practice, networking, building a fan base, and "paying dues" that older musicians such as Steely Dan had to do to become famous.
@priyangshu01 , and if you look at Steely Dan's videos you'll notice you don't see any young players who look like they're fresh out of high school or college; Steely Dan tends to lean towards older, mature musicians who've been on the scene for years and have built a reputation for great musicianship, hence, the reason why their music sounds so tight and artistic.
I honestly believe that is the great Wilton Felder on bass; kinda looks like Kenny Kirkland on keyboards; Bernard Purdie on Drums. Felder is a founder of The Crusaders most famous for his tenor saxophone work. But, he was also a very talented bassist, who recorded on countless jazz-funk fusion records in the 70s and 80s. -- says teacawks@yahoo.com
Makes me feel good to know i grew up not only listening to 60' mostly early mid 70's tunes and early 80's music before we "muscians" were goinWTF?????nothin like sitting behind a board or on a booth playin or all 5 feet apart smilin at each other as the tape rolled.I still HATE headphones , unless i am doing vocal backs!!!!
@ocean4315 ha, good catch! That gives us all hope. You're right though, on the original cut he definitely changes the feel and adds some 16th notes there but during this recording he was probably like...man what the hell did I used to do here?
@mstott25 He couldn't have known what he used to do because he didn't play on the original track... Rick marotta did. But he filled it up pretty sweet tough :)
Yeah, I caught that. When I heard that, the only thing that came across my mind was after the session and the cameras were off, I'm pretty sure they laughed it off. Still very professional.
IT'S NOT so much musicianship , which is outstanding . it's the vibe they create ,the colour & story lines . 4 me that's the only thing missing in modern music ,the levels of musicianship are the same today ,just with a little less romance ,yeah romance .
Damn these guys are smooth. And to think....this was played on mainstream/pop radio at the time. I remember growing up listening to this kind of stuff. Turn on mainstream radio these days and what do you get? Gaga, Beiber.....ooof.
While Graydon played on the studio version years ago for the album, the lead being played here is by Joe Harrington I believe.............he was a recent lead addition to the Dan during touring when they cut the live NYC DVD......... a very capable studio player that can read like sheets like there is no tomorrow......
that would be jay graydon on lead guitar there youngins. according to him, fagen brought in 8 guitarists to try the solo then made him work on it for Hours before using it.
when listing to this, i say to myself, oh man that drummer is awesome, then i say oh man that bass player is great and then i say wow that guitar player is the best...and it just keeps going on and on and repeats itself
@jonesfoto That's Paul Griffin on the rhodes. The only musician to get a writing credit on a Dan song (unless you count Keith Jarett). He wrote one of the melodies that repeats throughout the Fez... Don and Walt were afraid he plagiarized it, so they gave him the credit... I believe he passed away a couple years ago.

Love this tune. Have to say for me Rick Marotta's drums will always be the best for this track though. B&F always picked the right guys for the right tunes :-)
Purdie would show up at sessions with a sign that basically said, "Another hit record courtesy of Bernard Purdie," and he was right. I think he's performed on more records than any other drummer.
