What a beautiful looking Jewish cemetery! Thanks for posting this fascinating footage! The Stooges were all gifted performers who all left us much too soon.

Poor Shemp,Curly and Larry. They all had strokes and I believe it was a result of all the constant blows to the head that Moe inflicted on them, The human body can only take so many whacks from crowbars, pokes to the eye, hammers and saws to the head and trauma caused by wooden planks.
There is a large Jewish Cemetery in Fox Hills off the 405 Freeway near LAX. I wonder if that is where Curly and Shemp are buried. My cousin Barry Sexton is buried there too, he dies at 50 from cancer. Curly died at 55 Shemp at 60, ... that's pretty young.
@jaddison1112 Actually the cemetery they are at is in East Los Angeles in a mexican neighborhood which at one time was very jewish.. You can go to the office there and ask for their burial spot, but be prepared to get your eyes poked and a ball pin hammer to the head by the cemetery employees.
Its weird that they'd put "Shemp" on his marker. His real name was "Shepperd", not "Shemp". The only reason they called him that was because when his mother said his name, it sounded like "Shemperd" because of her strong accent.
I can't tell you what line-up was my favorite, but I can tell what was my LEAST favorite. The line-up with Joe Besser. Joe had some funny moments when he was working solo, but he made a terrible Stooge. I heard that he didn't like being slapped by Moe. COME ON! I'd give a hundred bucks just to be slapped by Moe Howard. I'd wear it like a badge of honor!
I've been there and left flowers for Curly but I couldn't find Shemp. A warning to anyone who goes there, don't ask the people there for help. They're a bunch of jerks & will NOT help you. All they care about is selling plots. Also, the neighborhood is a real ghetto so don't go alone. I'm planning on going back to find Shemp again. I found Moe, Larry & Curly. Don't ask the folks at Forrest Lawn for help either (where Larry is buried.) They aren't allowed to help visitors find famous graves.
The funniest slapstick comedians ever. Shemp added his own style to their films! They helped get us through a depression and two wars.... wish we had them now. RIP boys.

Hey, take a look at all Stooges biographies at IMDB and Wikipedia. Ya gonna find many interesting and unusual facts on all of them. And I tell ya gonna enjoy...
True. He was a childhood friend of Moe's! The two grew up together. I heard there was a time when Larry was going to leave the stooges and Moe talked him out of it.
it seems that you guys like me are massive fans of the three stooges so i must ask what is your favorite line up and who was your favorite stooge mine would have to be larry, moe, and shemp curly was good but shemp was the man
We are massive fans in deed. I personally like Moe, Larry, and Curly. I think Curly Howard was one of the all time comic greats. I really do love Shemp, too. He was different than Curly and had his own style. Very, very funny. I didn't care for Joe, or Curly Joe, just pale immitations of Curly.
the best stooge line-up was moe, larry, and curly. line-up number two would be moe, larry, and shemp. i truly miss these people. it makes me cry that i'm a true stooge fan and one of their friends.
@death2ur I didn't care for Joe either but I feel sorry for him. He came in to fill some awfully big shoes, and no matter how good (or bad) he was, he could never be another 'Curly'!
@death2ur joe and curly joe never really appealed to me cause they never seemed as good or they seemed far different and not that funny but they were okay
@death2ur - The tradition is to leave a rock - it is like two thousand years old - and is a sign of respect showing that people have visited the deceased and allows the person to somehow take part in the mitzva (good deed) of erecting a marker for the deceased. I have not ever heard of people leaving a penny at a Jewish grave-site...
@death2ur No, only tiny stones,I guess they don't have stones in hollywood! The reason forleaving is "From dust you came and to dust you return" which means the body but the soul is infinite.
You guys look like a really fun bunch of guys to be friends with especially todd he looks like a funny guy every time i see the video of moe howards grave and see him talk about his favorite moe moment and then make that face is to funny.
Thanks much. We do have fun at times, when appropriate, in the cemeteries because we also like to celebrate the person's life. I think some people, especially the Stooges, would like it that way.
Primeralives it is not against jewish tradition because in the 80's shemp's wife had his remains exhumed to perform an another autopsy to see what he really died of.
You are welcome. We have nothing against Joe Besser or Jo DeRita as people, they just weren't good Stooges. It's still the big 4 as far as we are concerned Moe, Larry, Curly, and Shemp. Shemp is actually very underrated.
curly, shemp, and moe are all brothers so was larry a family memeber as well or was he just a friend of their I never got how joe or larry fit into circle.
Larry and Joe were not related to the Horwitzs (Curly, Shemp, and Moe's real last name.) I never cared for Joe either. When we were kids and we gathered to watch the Stooges, we were always disappointed when Joe was on instead of Shemp or Curly.
The result of the second autopsy showed that he did have a heart attack and that it was caused from opaque plaque build up in his arteries. (Which is the usual cause of cronic heart disease.)
01998 asked if that's really their gravesite, and are they really Jews, because Jews bury their dead in the ground, not in mosoleums. stoogeophile explained to him that the Howard's were Lithuanian Jews born in America, so not necessarily tied to a tradition. 01998 thanked him for his answer, and said he is a Greek and Turkish Jew.
@WanagiAkicita, the Howard Brothers' father was a part time rabbi. Probably the one story about the Stooges' Jewishness that considered funny was when Moe, Curly and Shemp went to celebrate Passover at their parents' house, and the father had the Torah at the the dinner table, Well, when the father went to the bathroom, Shemp mischielessly turned the scroll, and when the father returned, he didn't know the difference!
It seems that Shemp and his doctors were aware of some heart condition and he was being treated with a new drug for it! I'm only reading between the lines here, but I have to wonder if the second autopsy was used to see if the medicine had killed him, or the heart attack! The word "compensation" comes rushing to mind? This is purely conjecture on my part,I hasten to add.

death2ur thanks a lot for the videos. When i co to california i now know what the graves look like.I have a map of the cemetary where moe and helen are buried.I am working on the others. Can you give the directions to all plz?
Shemp's was pretty easy, he's in the mausoleum, but Curly's was a little tougher. We usually look for the gravesite with the most momentos around it. Curly's grave had a lot of them. The grave yard wasn't bad either. We can give you directions when you decide to go.
Yes, it is the mausoleum in the same cemetery that his brother Curly is buried. I do not believe that he was cremated. I think that they are buried lengthwise in these vaults.
We didn't have time the last time we were in California, although, we found out later that Besser was right next to Larry's mausoleum. Next time we get out there, for sure.
I absolutely cannot thank you enough for sharing these memories of yours. I have been a fan since I can remember and they are still on my VCR everyday, now I know what their graves look like, thanks a million, very much appreciated
You are very welcome. I know the Stooges didn't get a fair shake with their studio when they were alive, but man, they have immortality and the undying love of fans all over the world. Thanks for the comment.
i gotta say i am impressed by all the vids r.i.p my friends anit noone ever be like ya long live the stooges ..fan since 7 years old .keep up the good work yall :0
you so know that a stooge is a thug right? i like the satirical outlook an the whole twenties do anything for a buck theme. boot legging, counterfeit operations, cons and scams, fraud. especially the way they act like they're all about the business.
I don't think they portrayed "thugs" so much as "men of their time". Remember, they were playing three guys who were too stupid to hold down any normal job, during an era (the great depression) when it was hard for anyone to have a job. They were simply acting out the part of desperate idiots trying to get by anyway they could. I thought they were hilarious. :-)
My word. It's difficult to comprehend that there are souls around who are so sensitive, they actually believe The Three Stooges promote thuggish behaviour! I can only hope for this persons mental well being that he/she never watches Granny slapping Sylvester around with her broom stick. :-)
before you come off all refined and cultured, i would urge you to learn how to punctuate and write proper sentences. it kind of ruins the illusion that you are a pretentious elitist, academic whos opinion actually has gravity. uh...that was sarcasm
Chuckle. This coming from a person who does not appear to understand the concept that sentences,in general, begin with capital letters.
In case it's simply that you can't fathom your keyboard, may I educate you? You can change letters to upper case using either the button with the upward pointing arrow, (first left on second row of keyboard) or pressing the "Caps Lock" button.
I hope this is of help in your endeavour to write,in English, proper (sic)
id much rather be a lazy typist than a pretentious twit. now, how about some more fragments and run-ons from the peanut gallery. do they even make you take the A.T.'s in grade school there in jolly old england? you told me that i dont "show up" to understand? it should be written that i appear not to understand. that would indicate that in a evident state, i do NOT understand. damn, the english cant even speak "good" english! anytime you wanna stop being insulted you just say uncle now, mmmkay
Hmmmm. After reading through your rather incoherent reply, I was alarmed to find at least fourteen grammar errors! Are you a born imbecile,or have you taken classes in idiocy? (One can only assume that opticannon's village is missing an idiot!)
this is starting to get old. its like as if i am talking to an adolescent who has no self awareness. i will make it real easy for you son; after this i wont dignify you with a reply so, in your mind you can have your personal victory.
We have been to Larry Fine's gravesite. However, for some reason, we forgot to take video of it. We do have pictures of it on our website, however. There wouldn't be Stooges without Larry Fine.
dude, i could be a quadruple amputee and still have enough arm to "brain" you and enough foot to kick your ass but, that would be a much to vulgar display of power.
Hey, now that you mention it, I remember that scene. You're right. Wow, I guess they wanted to have just the one scene with Moe and it would have been inconvenient for him to have to go to another site. On the whole, that was a good movie. A little surrealistic. Michael Chiklis was pretty good as Curly. Thanks for the comment.
You're right! Like the scene where in 1934there was a scene it was mentioned that Ted Healy signed a contract with 20th Century-Fox, when in real life Fox didn't merge with Darryl F. Zanuck's 20th Century Pictures until 1936. Or how about the scene where the Stooges first enter Columbia Pictures' studio gate in 1934, you can see a 1939 Plymouth Sedan exiting.

Shemp and Curly are both in Home of Peace Memorial Park in East Los Angeles, California.

Was it hard to find the grave yard where curly and shemp is buried? Also was it hard to find curly's grave site?
stars1976 4 years ago
Shemp's was pretty easy, he's in the mausoleum, but Curly's was a little tougher. We usually look for the gravesite with the most momentos around it. Curly's grave had a lot of them. The grave yard wasn't bad either. We can give you directions when you decide to go.
death2ur 4 years ago
I was always curious was shemp cremated and is this some sort of mausoleum?
stars1976 4 years ago
Yes, it is the mausoleum in the same cemetery that his brother Curly is buried. I do not believe that he was cremated. I think that they are buried lengthwise in these vaults.

Can you get footage of joe besser and curly joe derita's graves please?

We didn't have time the last time we were in California, although, we found out later that Besser was right next to Larry's mausoleum. Next time we get out there, for sure.

I absolutely cannot thank you enough for sharing these memories of yours. I have been a fan since I can remember and they are still on my VCR everyday, now I know what their graves look like, thanks a million, very much appreciated

You are very welcome. I know the Stooges didn't get a fair shake with their studio when they were alive, but man, they have immortality and the undying love of fans all over the world. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks a bunch. There ain't nobody like the Stooges. We too have been watching them since we were just kids.

you so know that a stooge is a thug right? i like the satirical outlook an the whole twenties do anything for a buck theme. boot legging, counterfeit operations, cons and scams, fraud. especially the way they act like they're all about the business.
opticannon 4 years ago
Interesting take.
death2ur 4 years ago
I don't think they portrayed "thugs" so much as "men of their time". Remember, they were playing three guys who were too stupid to hold down any normal job, during an era (the great depression) when it was hard for anyone to have a job. They were simply acting out the part of desperate idiots trying to get by anyway they could. I thought they were hilarious. :-)

Good response.
death2ur 3 years ago
and just what do you think a thug is? look it up in the dictionary. these circumstances promote the thug. anyhow i said it was a satirical look.
opticannon 3 years ago
My word. It's difficult to comprehend that there are souls around who are so sensitive, they actually believe The Three Stooges promote thuggish behaviour! I can only hope for this persons mental well being that he/she never watches Granny slapping Sylvester around with her broom stick. :-)

before you come off all refined and cultured, i would urge you to learn how to punctuate and write proper sentences. it kind of ruins the illusion that you are a pretentious elitist, academic whos opinion actually has gravity. uh...that was sarcasm
opticannon 3 years ago
"and write proper (sic) sentences"...
I hope this is of help in your endeavour to write,in English, proper (sic)
mmotorway 3 years ago
id much rather be a lazy typist than a pretentious twit. now, how about some more fragments and run-ons from the peanut gallery. do they even make you take the A.T.'s in grade school there in jolly old england? you told me that i dont "show up" to understand? it should be written that i appear not to understand. that would indicate that in a evident state, i do NOT understand. damn, the english cant even speak "good" english! anytime you wanna stop being insulted you just say uncle now, mmmkay
opticannon 3 years ago
Hmmmm. After reading through your rather incoherent reply, I was alarmed to find at least fourteen grammar errors! Are you a born imbecile,or have you taken classes in idiocy? (One can only assume that opticannon's village is missing an idiot!)
mmotorway 3 years ago
this is starting to get old. its like as if i am talking to an adolescent who has no self awareness. i will make it real easy for you son; after this i wont dignify you with a reply so, in your mind you can have your personal victory.
opticannon 3 years ago
That was a pretty good exchange, guys, but I give the victory to opticannon.

Mr. Death2Ur Have you ever been at Larry Fine's grave site? If so can put it on youtube.
Realleams 3 years ago
We have been to Larry Fine's gravesite. However, for some reason, we forgot to take video of it. We do have pictures of it on our website, however. There wouldn't be Stooges without Larry Fine.
death2ur 3 years ago
Alas,it is a hollow victory! As a rule,I refrain from having a battle of wits against an unarmed opponent!
mmotorway 3 years ago
dude, i could be a quadruple amputee and still have enough arm to "brain" you and enough foot to kick your ass but, that would be a much to vulgar display of power.
opticannon 3 years ago
You want to kick my "ass"! Why would you want to kick my donkey? Whatever has Wilbur ever done to warrant such an act of violence?
mmotorway 3 years ago
In the 2000 tv movie about the Stooges they showed Shemp and Curly`s graves (movie set) on the ground. Thats Hollywood for you.
jack2breeze 4 years ago
Hey, now that you mention it, I remember that scene. You're right. Wow, I guess they wanted to have just the one scene with Moe and it would have been inconvenient for him to have to go to another site. On the whole, that was a good movie. A little surrealistic. Michael Chiklis was pretty good as Curly. Thanks for the comment.
death2ur 4 years ago
Yeah, that movie kinda pissed me off actually. Very little was accurate. Worthy effort I suppose...
hankshreve 4 years ago
You're right! Like the scene where in 1934there was a scene it was mentioned that Ted Healy signed a contract with 20th Century-Fox, when in real life Fox didn't merge with Darryl F. Zanuck's 20th Century Pictures until 1936. Or how about the scene where the Stooges first enter Columbia Pictures' studio gate in 1934, you can see a 1939 Plymouth Sedan exiting.
