Its a matter of taste which top tenor you prefer. I love Kraus in "Porquille me revellier" (certain recordings of it).
But sometimes he sings to much through his nose (nasal) for my taste. Also Sergein Lemeshev sometimes did this too much (nasal singing). But in Lensky´s aria Lemeshev is perfect!
To bad Bjorling never recorded Werther though. Sometimes rumor says that a recording lies hidden somewhere collecting dust. But there simply is no such recording.
@rbb0509 Whats the matter with you? Are you the type that is looking for typo-errors? Incorrect grammar?
Sorry to dissapoint you-That kind of comments only mean you have no argument against my opinion. If you disagree with "the message" in a posting - Please post a logical argument-Or shut up!

@Baritanist what a stupid comment. If he had a constricted voice, how could he reach High Ds live? You need to have an open and free sound to get to those highs. If the technique wasn't perfect, he couldn't have sung until he was 70 years old, singing high notes that would have embarrassed many tenors on their twenties.
Kraus sei IMMENSO, G r a z i e ....
One of my greatest regrets is that I never new of this great artist until after his death. I surely would have enjoyed hearing him in concert. I remember thinking to myself many times that I must hear Pavarotti, but didn't make it happen, and then he died. He and Kraus were examples we may never see again in our lives. If you have favorite musicians, make sure to see them in person at all costs. Tempus Fugit!
Completely agree. I saw Pav twice and he was masterful. The voice was not over-amplified, his voice was simply HUGE and clear and under precise control. Kraus, sounds like another "pure voice" with a clear ringing tone, although in a different color, I was born too late to see him perform and wish theri were more recordings of him when young.
@seektheforce I couldn't find Björling's recording of "A te, o cara" anywhere (not on the internet, at least), not a single clue. So, convinced that it probably never even existed, I gave up. But I would love to hear it. Could you please tell me where to look for it?
WOW! I just listened to Pavarotti 1969 (with Freni) and this is MUCH better (vocally, stylistically). He just has a problem, I don't know if it's a mannerism or a weakness, but he slurs upwards on some notes, and the voice doesn't seem to follow as quickly as the intention.
What a happy marriage of technique and passion. Kraus is in his element here with just the right vocal timbre for this aria; ardent but with controlled power.
I heard Kraus years ago, (many) sing in Lucia Chicago and the voice carried fine and then next week I heard Pavoratti do it with Joan S yes his voice was slightly larger but not sung with the passion or style Kraus did it with and in fact his voice was not a lot larger at that time. Later he pumped his voice up but that hurt pav. as far as high notes in time, Kraus never pushed so he lasted longer How old was he here? Heard Shicoff and Tucker also sing Edgardo beautifully 1961 and 1986
you should wait another 40 years perhaps to utter such an ignorant comment.Kraus was pure technique, legato, breath control and elegance. absolutely right. READ what they say Luck1au. I JUST copy.
you should wait another 35 years perhaps to utter such an ignorant comment.Kraus was pure technique, legato, breath control and elegance. Florez has a very thin voice, more like an alto, barely a tenor.Compare them singing, ¨la jota del trust de los tenorios, el te quiero morena¨, you will hear the big difference, florez is a tiny, tiny voice with excellent highs, but a tenor is not only highs but a full range of sounds. The orchestra covers FLOREZ up in most parts.Florez voice is light my friend.
Obviously you didnt read my comment through. I said I love Kraus and he is my favourite tenor of all time. I dont know what informed your comments about my ignorance. Since you dont even know my credentials. Just do yourself a favour read carefully before making comments here. you really do look like a fool. If you are not one
Who called Pav king of the high Cs? may be its the ill informed like you. I am a bit worried about some of your statements like Kraus having a smaller voice than Florez. I wonder how many recordings of Kraus have you listened to. Otherwise lets agree to disagree. I have recordings of Pav singing I Puritani with Freni. I can promise you his C sharp is not what would make him proud. I have heard Kraus sing even an E flat. I suppose we have different taste. Kraus truly does it for me
"a")...
What do you know about music babitt12? You are a typical fan,who is blinded by his idol.Kraus was a very good tenor, but many others had stronger, or more beautyfull voices.Gigli, probably had even a better technic. But Kraus is uniq in his own way,I like him very much.
Opera critics agree that Arturo is kraus role and that he owned it for more than 25 years. I have never heard any other tenor sing this role better than he has. Corelli is no where close to Kraus technically. Kraus' musicianship and intelligence is unsurpassed in his generation.
definetelly, don´t even compare this tenor´s technique with Corelli who sang with a big bang of voice , great voice, but here we have wiht KRAUS what an opera singer should sound like.A pure operatic singing, JOERLING TOO.
it shows no such thing.criticism is vaild.many critics consider corelli to be flawed,he tries too hard, and while this sytle pleases some, for me it s plainly ridiculous and unworthy.
i heard kraus once admonish against being seduced by fame and forgetting the art itself.his voice could not have been better.yet he is not worshipped like corelli,in whose voice i find little sincerity.the fame goes to the glamorous ones and not always the better ones.
i like krauss clear voice.some ay it is weak,i guess in relation to those who bellowlike corelli.well, you can keep your corelli, overrated fop that he was,i am not moved by him but in kraus there is something tender which i adore!
Comparison is the name of the game. I guess we get t appreciate the art of singing when we compare artists. In music we interpret and the interpretation make it worthwhile to compare singers. So if you dont like comparisons just leave this forum and waste your time somewhere else
