I lived the same experience during almost of my child hood, but i was lucky enough my family was spared until now,,but a lot of my fiends we grew up together were shot down some with their families during the wars in Burundi,Rwanda and Congo!!

this is most likely some language spoken either in italy, or in spain a little less likely.
it is a latin language and has sounds specific to eastern europe.
