Okay I was 13 when I saw the remake so don't judge me for seeing the remake before the 1984 original, anyway I downloaded the original and watched it last night. To be honest, I liked the remake more, I loved Robert Englund in the original for being a funny smart-ass of a villain (in contrast to Jackie's more sinister portrayal), and I give the producers credit for the great manual effects, but overall I preferred the remake for it's darker, more menacing tone.

But when I looked at the special features on The Mask dvd, they were talking about the Special effects and how The Mask was one of the first movies to use CGI in that way then they referenced another New Line Cinema movie, Nightmare on Elm Street and showed pretty much all of the dream sequences. Hence, I have not seen the movie, I just saw the dream sequences. I also saw the ending but nothing else.

Wow. You don't give bad reviews... This movie fucking sucked. Nightmare wasn't anything for Freddy Kruger. It wasn't even a sad laugh. It sucked so bad it learned how to deep throat. And I'm a huge old school and new school fan. But this wasn't suspenseful or frightening. Freddy looked like a toad, the lighting was awful, and the teenagers (like you said) didnt really do anything except die. Christ, this was down by the Halloween remake, which I'm sure you gave 3/4 to as well. No silver lining.
Katie Cassidy was the best thing about this remake. Haley was good but he wasn't as awesome as Englund's Freddy. I thought he could've been better but he was great near the end of the film.
First of all, they dream too much. Part of the horror of the old movies was because you could see them suffer in real life trying NOT to sleep and when they did they were boned. Secondly too much special FX. It's used too much as is, this movie did not help because it wasn't needed. Thirdly: Child molestation. I don't think this movie had any real idea how to handle that. This movie was worse than New Nightmare! The thing that makes Freddy so great is his personality: you can tell he's actually having FUN killing these teenagers. The new Freddy talks in a monotone with a really bad Batman impersonation, it worked for Rorschach, not so much for the Steve McQueen of horror villains.
Well I have to say although the remake was okay it just wasn't great for me, I am a fan of the original, because although there was cheese, it had that typical Wes Craven feel to it, hard to explain but I guess it would be the eerie atmosphere which he manages to execute so well in his movies, Scream had the exact same feel to it.

It just goes to show how small minded most people are, the remake was good. All the reasons he talked about were on point, everyone just hates change. Change being it wasn't the same freddy.
The movie is shit. Not only it has all the horror cliches, but also nothing new. Freddy looked tasty instead of scary. The end was just a fucking rip off. Also I have no nolstagia because I have only recently see the movie. Sorry, but saying this shit was better just makes me more sure that you get too exciting or "down" and you base your whole review on one moment feeling. Or simply you have no taste.
I found this film to be underrated. Jackie Earl Haley managed to be darker than Englund ever was. There were a lot homages to the original, and put a new spin on the premise with the micro naps. It really focused more on the effects of sleep deprivation rather than the actual dreams, which I found found to be a pretty inventive take on the whole situation, and definitely added to the overall intensity. All in all, a worthy reboot. Hope the sequel will follow suit
I wasn't expecting much from this movie last year, but I ended up enjoying the hell out of it. The real life to dream sequences were pretty neat and they introduced micro naps which I felt was a neat idea and it put the characters in more danger than in the original. The only complaint I have is that the actors were sub par, some were pretty good but two in particular were just bad.
i liked this and the friday the 13th reboot. they were exactly what you expect from the past movies, just with newer deaths, effects and a new cast. people set their expectations way to high when they are fine with the older films which are more than similar to this.

I think if you seen the orginial first, then this isn't going to be as good or fun since you know what to expect. BUT, if you are one of those people who somehow haven't seen the orginial, it might be better.
I'd have to say the remake is a better movie, even though I grew up with the original. I have the first four Freddy movies with VS Jason, and I really have to say that the remake did things more smoothly. The first one had a few blatant plotholes with iffy acting. And honestly, a movie about a pedophilic dream demon brutally slaughtering you shouldn't be funny. Besides, if you watch them in a row you realize that they really didn't know what they were doing with the character.

For me, I have to say the original was better. You described all the reasons why I love it (mainly the cheese factor). But I borrowed it from a friend and I laid down on my bed, and fell a sleep 20 minutes in. I woke up just before Nancy gets pulled into the mirror (or some thing like that)

I watched all the Nightmare on Elm Streets for the first time in the past week. I feel like this one was alright. It's better than Part 2 and Part 6, but still towards the bottom of the pile. The original and New Nightmare are definitely the best, followed by the Dream trilogy.

It just goes to show how small minded most people are, the remake was good. All the reasons he talked about were on point, everyone just hates change. Change being it wasn't the same freddy.

The movie is shit. Not only it has all the horror cliches, but also nothing new. Freddy looked tasty instead of scary. The end was just a fucking rip off. Also I have no nolstagia because I have only recently see the movie. Sorry, but saying this shit was better just makes me more sure that you get too exciting or "down" and you base your whole review on one moment feeling. Or simply you have no taste.

I found this film to be underrated. Jackie Earl Haley managed to be darker than Englund ever was. There were a lot homages to the original, and put a new spin on the premise with the micro naps. It really focused more on the effects of sleep deprivation rather than the actual dreams, which I found found to be a pretty inventive take on the whole situation, and definitely added to the overall intensity. All in all, a worthy reboot. Hope the sequel will follow suit

I wasn't expecting much from this movie last year, but I ended up enjoying the hell out of it. The real life to dream sequences were pretty neat and they introduced micro naps which I felt was a neat idea and it put the characters in more danger than in the original. The only complaint I have is that the actors were sub par, some were pretty good but two in particular were just bad.

i liked this and the friday the 13th reboot. they were exactly what you expect from the past movies, just with newer deaths, effects and a new cast. people set their expectations way to high when they are fine with the older films which are more than similar to this.

Finally someone who did a REAL review for the new A Nightmare On Elm Street. I loved the movie and I totally agree with you, it is darker, more intense, a new(and badass) personality for Freddy... It is just awesome!

I'd have to say the remake is a better movie, even though I grew up with the original. I have the first four Freddy movies with VS Jason, and I really have to say that the remake did things more smoothly. The first one had a few blatant plotholes with iffy acting. And honestly, a movie about a pedophilic dream demon brutally slaughtering you shouldn't be funny. Besides, if you watch them in a row you realize that they really didn't know what they were doing with the character.

@TheSpurian His sick humour, is what made A Nightmare on elmstreet and Freddy, so amazing. Back in the 90's all movies were like that, "The so serious" Attitude, with killing. But Freddy brought something new to th game, something more intresting. Why does it all have to be the same? Why can't there be something new? Freddys sick dark humour in all, is what people will always remember in freddy, Not this, This "Remake" Will be forgotten, Freddy will live on, the real freddy.

For me, I have to say the original was better. You described all the reasons why I love it (mainly the cheese factor). But I borrowed it from a friend and I laid down on my bed, and fell a sleep 20 minutes in. I woke up just before Nancy gets pulled into the mirror (or some thing like that)

I watched all the Nightmare on Elm Streets for the first time in the past week. I feel like this one was alright. It's better than Part 2 and Part 6, but still towards the bottom of the pile. The original and New Nightmare are definitely the best, followed by the Dream trilogy.
