That's because, eventhough you can understand some of the language, you were not born in that country at that time, and therefore you cannot grasp that very specific culture. There's more to humour than simply stringing a few vaguely intelligible words together and interspersing them with obscenities the way modern "comedians" do.
I don't know why, but so many people thinks this is a strange language, without ever being to South Africa nor understanding any of the involved languages, I can understand 98% of it, it all sounds like english with a weird accent.
In any case, I can't still understand what's so funny about it...
