There are plenty of games with amazing graphics that are just terrible and one in particular that came out not too long ago and got such bad reviews that the company had to threaten reviewers not to write any more bad articles on the game.
@spicandspamful last time I checked Minecraft has the most BASIC graphics imaginable... and yet that game still was a massive success and is preparing to launch on xbox after having launched on windows and smart phones.. graphics honestly have little to nothing to do with how successful or good a game is.. I could name dozens of games with complete garbage for graphics yet turned game developers into millionaires(blizzard is a great example).. don't knock games until you've tried them.

This game pays tribute to one of THE most important Role Playing games in Computer Game history, DUNGEON MASTER (Google it !!!). It was eventually evolved by other developers into more technically advanced titles, but DM pretty much got the ball rolling for the FPS RPGs. Can't wait for this, and yes, I'm that old :-)))
Another thing I'm thinking about is that while you essentially play 4 people by the look of it, it feels like you're one person. I have no idea how you'd make it feel like 4 people on this apart from going third person, but meh. I can live with feeling like one person.
@kochonlebest - I actually do - and I loved those games. But back then, the gameplay and the low graphics came together formed the feeling of gaming in that generation. But dear God, why bother making beatiful scenes, meshes, animations and more if it's supposed to be ruined by an irritating movement motoring. Nostalgia is fine - my opinion is just that they should get it together the last few feet and make things fit together. I'm a dickhead - not on purpose.

@TraitorBagel I seem to remember the game developers mentioning that they will be using their own engine. Beyond that I do not know. Their site is grimrock.net but I haven't really looked into it properly yet. I definitely agree with you, though.
@Thoreksir wow thats quite a feat to create an engine that looks that good, then again i would imagine a new engine is required for a Dungeon Master sort of game where you move in squares etc. It kind of looks familiar, especially the graphics but i can't put my finger on what it is. Definately looking forward to the alpha release!

So, Dungeon Master/Eye of the Beholder. Cool. About time we got a modern version. I won't be getting it, though - even Back in the Day my memory sucked too badly for memorizing glyph patterns to cast spells (hence why, though I'd love to play it, I haven't picked up Magicka :(.
This is making my cry tears of joy. This is what the Might and Magic series could have become had it gone on. I'm so happy to see this style of game return.
Imagine a future, where we were able to play these types of games in a virtual reality setting, tricking ourselves into thinking the game was real. The psychological element of being stuck within a dungeon would be insane.
Finally, a first person grid-based dungeon crawler! I have been waiting my whole life for this- Oh wait a minute millions of these already existed in the 80s nevermind.
YAY! But can it have a switchable turn by turn mode for combat (with less rewards but more options?). Otherwise fantastic! A game, a demo, a long-play, a walkthrough, a book, something but take your time! Don't hurry and release an alpha with 6-patch-in-a-month routine, pleeeease! And don't make a scenarioless hack'n slash game. Wizardry VII was perfect although difficult.
i won't lie, notch brought me here. But i've gotta say, this is just looking utterly fantastic! you guys are reviving an entire genre of video games, and I wish you the best of luck in fulfilling this task. In my eyes, a crucial part of the gaming industry itself is depending on you guys! Don't let crucial part die!
I just hope they will make it as close as possible to Land of Lore. The map system, items, dungeons, etc. I would be happy if you couldn't have 4 chars at start, its fun to find someone in your path that follows you and your journey. I loved that 4 handed beast in LoL he was amazing.
How is this like Skyrim? It's a Roguelike, meaning randomly generated dungeons, item drops, etc. and if it follows the formula most Roguelike's do, it will be nothing like Skyrim.
Also this game is likely going to be far FAR cheaper than Skyrim for PC, I mean 59.99 for the DIGITAL version is retarded. I get burned on most AAA titles nowadays with their super conservative design philosophies meaning little variance and nothing truly challenging.
My thoughts:- Nice graphics. Could use more atmosphere. Looks far too easy, I hope this was either a buffed party or there will be difficulty levels. The gameplay looks very boring. You took an almost 30 year design and you improved the graphics, why did you not improve everything else? The average old school RPG fan doesn't really care about graphics. If I want to play something like this I can load up dosbox and play any of a huge number of games like this.
I can't judge entirely from this short movie of course. But it does leave me a little bored. I could never play another game which only has a few spells like fireball, freeze, and poison. Please, before you release this game and wonder why only 12 people bought it, go and sign up to the trial of Rift. It's free. Try the characters and see how it plays, and then ask yourself, when there are games doing stuff like that, why would anyone want to play something like this?

I dunno, is it really that much better looking than games like Stonekeep? Maybe it's just me but I never cared about the graphics in games like Eye of the Beholder 2. I loved them because of the little things, like the puzzles, the difficulty, the incredibly nasty level where you can't rest, the very varied dungeon types, etc. I can still play any number of those old classics with DosBox. New graphics are nice but, I don't see the point if there's not new gameplay too.
I am a bit. I enjoyed the old RPG's at the time, so it could just be like playing one of those again. But it's just that as I get older and as games get better and better, it becomes harder to find the motivation to load up dosbox and play one of those old games now.
Yeah this looks really good. Glad to see this type of game is finally coming back. Eye of the Beholder 2 was always one of my favorite games. It didn't have the best graphics even at the time, but it had an atmosphere about it that I've not seen since.

I have been waiting for an old school game with modern graphics.
This reminds me of Might and Magic, and M&M 6 was by far one of the greatest games ever.
I love party system games with the party moving all as one unit.
The only thing I like and does not show up in this video is a turn based switch.
It would be nice to be able to hit a key and switch into turn based play.
I am getting old and my reflexes are getting worse :)

Imagine a future, where we were able to play these types of games in a virtual reality setting, tricking ourselves into thinking the game was real. The psychological element of being stuck within a dungeon would be insane.

YAY! But can it have a switchable turn by turn mode for combat (with less rewards but more options?). Otherwise fantastic! A game, a demo, a long-play, a walkthrough, a book, something but take your time! Don't hurry and release an alpha with 6-patch-in-a-month routine, pleeeease! And don't make a scenarioless hack'n slash game. Wizardry VII was perfect although difficult.

I just hope they will make it as close as possible to Land of Lore. The map system, items, dungeons, etc. I would be happy if you couldn't have 4 chars at start, its fun to find someone in your path that follows you and your journey. I loved that 4 handed beast in LoL he was amazing.

How is this like Skyrim? It's a Roguelike, meaning randomly generated dungeons, item drops, etc. and if it follows the formula most Roguelike's do, it will be nothing like Skyrim.
Also this game is likely going to be far FAR cheaper than Skyrim for PC, I mean 59.99 for the DIGITAL version is retarded. I get burned on most AAA titles nowadays with their super conservative design philosophies meaning little variance and nothing truly challenging.

My thoughts:- Nice graphics. Could use more atmosphere. Looks far too easy, I hope this was either a buffed party or there will be difficulty levels. The gameplay looks very boring. You took an almost 30 year design and you improved the graphics, why did you not improve everything else? The average old school RPG fan doesn't really care about graphics. If I want to play something like this I can load up dosbox and play any of a huge number of games like this.

I can't judge entirely from this short movie of course. But it does leave me a little bored. I could never play another game which only has a few spells like fireball, freeze, and poison. Please, before you release this game and wonder why only 12 people bought it, go and sign up to the trial of Rift. It's free. Try the characters and see how it plays, and then ask yourself, when there are games doing stuff like that, why would anyone want to play something like this?

I dunno, is it really that much better looking than games like Stonekeep? Maybe it's just me but I never cared about the graphics in games like Eye of the Beholder 2. I loved them because of the little things, like the puzzles, the difficulty, the incredibly nasty level where you can't rest, the very varied dungeon types, etc. I can still play any number of those old classics with DosBox. New graphics are nice but, I don't see the point if there's not new gameplay too.

I am a bit. I enjoyed the old RPG's at the time, so it could just be like playing one of those again. But it's just that as I get older and as games get better and better, it becomes harder to find the motivation to load up dosbox and play one of those old games now.

Yeah this looks really good. Glad to see this type of game is finally coming back. Eye of the Beholder 2 was always one of my favorite games. It didn't have the best graphics even at the time, but it had an atmosphere about it that I've not seen since.

There is nothing more that I would love than a new Eye of the Beholder type game, but it would at least need to be able to live up to modern standards.
